@Mrsbells: Yep our mattress has waterproof exterior on our mattress with the special seams so nothing will get through. If we have to change the sheets we just wipe it down real quick and throw on a new sheet and are good to go. We have a Moonlight Slumber mattress.

@pelikila: Does your mattress have a waterproof cover?

Ours has a waterproof cover too, does that mean I wont need a mattress pad?

I have 3 and that's worked for us. My trick it to make the bed in layers- pad, fitted sheet, pad, fitted sheet, pad, fitted sheet.

That way, if there's an accident in the night, I just pull off the top sheet and pad and the bed is already clean and made underneath! No remaking the bed in the middle of the night!

We don't have any mattress pads because of the type of mattress we have. We do have 3 fitted crib sheets though.

I dont have any yet but I'll be getting two. I'll be doing the pad, then sheet, then pad then sheet thing so I can just rip a layer off if it gets soiled.

I have two mattress pads with the elastic all the way around, from Carters I think.

I also have two that don't have elastic and are just flat, that I use for impromptu changing pads and in a pinch have used under the mattress.

Which type did you get? I see two carter's types on BRU, but can't tell what the difference is! (one is 13.99 and one is 17.99) and then there is a Sealy organic (32.99?)

When they're really little you can just lay blankets (I used flannel receiving blankets) over the sheets and change those when they get soiled. It happens a lot more often with baby spit-up and leaky diapers. Once they get a little older, the blankets are obviously a sids risk. I would use a super thin blanket and tuck in the edges around the edges of the bassinet liner. Once he was in the crib I think I just stuck with sheets since he was in a different room.

2 is good for us. If it gets dirty you have a backup, but laundry is always being done so the next will be clean quick enough.

charlie has always thrown up A LOT. he did 4 times last night in fact (he's sick). we've always only had two and it's been enough, but i do the laundry frequently -- as soon as he throws up, or once a week -- whichever comes first.

We had 3 mattress pads and 3 fitted crib sheets. That way if one gets soiled in the middle of the night and one's already in the hamper, you have one clean set on hand. I do the same with sleep sacks-- 3 on hand at all times. One in the drawer, one in the hamper, one being used.

Now that he's older and we don't have leaks/blowouts/vomit that often, I just change the sheet.

I saw on Mrs Bee's newborn checklist that she started out with 2 mattress pads. Did everyone else have the same number? I bought one today but I guess it makes sense to have more than one in case on gets dirty... how many did you have?
