@birdofafeather: We do have lots of fun and both girls are great together. I can't wait for this horrendous winter to do one so we can hit up some parks and let them explore the outdoors properly, like jumping in puddles and running on the grass

Former nanny here! I still was when I joined HB, and we weren't even TTC yet! :) I quit last year when we moved, and didn't continue here because I had 2 m/c's and needed a break from kids. But I think once my kid(s) are older I'll pick it back up.

@PermaStudent: No, they didn't actually and the girls themselves are very good about sharing attention; if one needs a cuddle, the other one is very good about it. Sometimes while one is getting a hug, the other comes and sits on my knee and hugs the other girl too. The mom is another bee: @oliviaoblivia: I think what helps a lot is we discuss the girls' individual schedules and needs a lot and keep in text contact through the day.

@travelgirl1: Not gonna lie, that sounds pretty ideal to me! I have to ask - did the family that you nanny for ever express concern that you'd give more attention to your own LO at the expense of theirs?

I nannied for over 10 years. I still see some of "my kids".

@Cole: I was a nanny for over 10 years (8 years for one family) up until the birth of my own. It's different, because you get to make your own schedule and rules. I feel nannying helped me SO much though. I'm much more relaxed than all the other first time moms I know. And I feel I've seen so many different parenting styles I've gotten to see first hand what I would and wouldn't like to do with my own. I have felt confident and natural with LO from the beginning, and I'm used to the chaos and mess that comes with kids.

Here! I have done live-out, live-in, FT and PT, and did so for about 5-ish years.

@Cole: firstly, congrats on the BFP! Secondly, it is worlds different. A huge reason I loved being a nanny is because I could experience loving children, their love returned, and the joys that being with a child during the day can bring - but at the end of the day I could give them back to their parents, and then relax do my own thing. I could go out with friends, stay out late and sleep in on weekends. I could date and really had so much free reign. But when you're a parent, though you experience that same love and joy, you're also faced with constant heartbreak, sleeplessness, loss of freedom, responsibilities, etc. I was pretty shocked at how different it was, but more importantly, shocked at how much more I could love my own child - even though I had always treated my nanny kids as "my own".

Oh- and as a nanny you get paid a pretty penny to care for others kids, but being a parent, you definitely do not get paid. You pay to be a parent in so many ways. Not that it isn't worth it - ha. This is just scratching the surface of how different it was for me.

I worked as an au pair for a year before starting university, for a family with 4 kids, a 16 year old, 15 year old, 3 years old and 6 month old. To be honest I didn't really have much to do with the baby, I mainly looked after the 3 year old and took the older kids to school ect.

I loved it, and my family was great, but I don't think it's done much to prepare me for having kids on my own.

@jmarionsmith: Yes! This! I didn't read a single book until after lo was born because I just assumed I knew what I was doing. The shock of realizing I didn't have a CLUE was completely unexpected and hit me like a ton of bricks those first months.

i nannied for a few years after college.

@Cole: while nannying gave me a lot of experience and has given me ideas of what to expect, i feel like it also set me up to be a little over confident. especially because i nannied for a newborn so i had a kind of "i got this" attitude but in reality nannying for a newborn and being a parent to a newborn are completely different things (obviously. it just didn't click until after a few nights of no sleep ;) )

that's probably not even what you were asking, but just my experience. :)

I was a nanny for 3 years before DD was born in September. I still have a great relationship with my last family.

@Cole: it's helped a lot! I find I'm much more calm when my LO cries because I know I can figure out what's wrong. I know what I do want to do with her & what I don't. It's definitely different with your own LO but I definitely feel like I've had an advantage compared to other first time moms

@cole- I don't have any kids of my own but I imagine it will be a lot easier. You already know what parenting style works for you (hopefully your husband agrees) and you're able to make the rules. When you're a nanny sometimes you have to do whatever your boss wants even though you disagree with it. I think it will be a lot easier.

I was in college. It wasn't a formal arrangement with paid holidays or time off...it was more lax than that because the lady I worked for was just volunteering at her kids school, studying for her boards and doing other things which didn't give her a super rigid schedule. I loved it and the money was good!!!
