We just tried to move our 6 month old to 2 naps for about a week. It was a disaster. She couldn't handle that much time before bed and started waking up allllll night. We are still struggling with early mornings but I went back to 3 naps for now. It seems like of your baby can handle longer awake times I would try for 2 naps, it might make them longer.

DD2 will be 6 months on Friday and I'm scared to jinx it, but her naps have settled down since I recently moved her to two regulars naps. I would give 2-3-4 a try and see if it helps. I do think though that their sleep just goes through good and crummy cycles, so when it's bad, I just remind myself it'll pass, and when it's good, I try and enjoy it before it all falls apart again :silly:

Try a 2-3-4 schedule and see how he does. I didn't move DS to that until he was 8 or 9 months and after I did it, I realized we probably could've done it way before that. For a really long time you could practically tell time by when he needed his first nap. It would be pretty much 2 hours on the dot after waking up that he'd get cranky. The 2nd nap was always a bit more flexible though. DS did fine with it anywhere from 3-3.5 hours after he woke up from nap 1. And we did a standard bed time, we didn't try to time it 4 hours after his last waking.

We just went through this! My DD has always fought naps after the newborn stage, but she went through a phase where she would really only nap on us from 6-7 months! And she had to cry herself to sleep almost every time too... So frustrating. She has just very recently started napping much better (though we haven't changed anything) starting about 8 months. She generally takes 2 naps a day (then & now) and sleeps 12 hours at night. Every now and then she would pass out from her 4:30p bottle after daycare if she hadn't slept enough there as well. Maybe it's just an age thing? The best thing I learned is to put her down at the earliest hint of tiredness (usually 2.5-3 hrs after waking) for the easiest & best naps.

my LO was taking 3 naps at that age, but my LO has been at the slower end of the range in dropping naps.

if your LO is learning a new skill or going through some developmental change, it can mess up naps for a bit before going back to normal. or, as people have suggested, he might be ready to drop to 2 naps. although even when a kid is "ready" to drop a nap, the transition can still be kind of rough.

it's so hard to tell! i think it's up to you and what you can tolerate best, waiting it out and keep trying with the current nap schedule for a week or so to see if it's just a phase, or working to 2 naps.

for the rolling around--i would generally leave my LO until he settled down on his own, but that may not work for every baby.

DS is 7 months and takes 3 naps a day: late morning, mid-afternoon and late afternoon. Up until recently, he only slept 30-45min for each one. Now he takes one or two 1.5hr naps plus a short one. I know this won't be a popular technique, but once he's asleep (I rock him, uh oh!), I hold him for a bit then put him down on our bed, where I sit next to him for the duration of the nap. He rouses slightly part way through the nap, sees I'm there then goes back to sleep. I'm guessing that seeing me beside him makes him feel secure enough to go back to sleep (whereas before, he'd wake up if he was alone). I use the time to read, fart around online etc.

Or if you would prefer not to sit by him the whole time, you can leave once he's asleep and return when you suspect he will start stirring.

As for the rolling, DS does that at night sometimes. I have to just reach over and keep putting him back on his back and sometimes lift him up or tickle his neck to snap him out of it.

At 6 months my son's napping was awful and it turned out he needed a 2 nap schedule. He needed about 2.5 hours of wake time before each nap, slept for about 90 minutes for each nap (or a combined 3-ish hours a day in naps) and then he was up about 3 hours before bedtime at 7-730pm, depending on how tired he was. I think we had early bedtime for about 2 weeks. Then he was down for about 11-12 hours at night. Now a 8 months, I think he's just about ready for more like 2 hours and 45 minutes of wake time. He's started taking a longer morning nap and a shorter afternoon nap, but still around the 3 hour nap total.

I will say that every time DS has some major developmental change (especially physically), it messes up his sleep. When he was learning to crawl and sit up at the same time, that was a doozy. It was annoying because he would just work on it over and over and get frustrated and scream and generally cause a ruckus. He'd wake up after every sleep cycle and just start practicing and screaming even though he was exhausted. In fact we moved him to sleeping in the PNP at this point (with a mattress and sheet) because he kept falling over and smacking his head on the crib rails which just made it worse. He's still in the PNP because how he's pulling up and falling over constantly! But at least he just falls and at some point gets tired and falls asleep. In the crib it was like constantly getting a foot stuck or smashing his head or whatever.

From about 6 months to 14 months, mine took 2 naps for between 1.5-2+ hours each. The morning one was at 9:30 and the afternoon one was at 1:30. We never ever messed with the nap schedule. That stinks his sleep is all over the place, I know you've tried sleep training at night, is it worth trying nap training for the day? Will he sleep in the stroller or swing?

DD transitioned to 2 naps right around 6.5 months. She is just 7 months now and still occasionally needs a 20 min catnap in the late afternoon, but it's rare. We pretty much follow the 2-3-4 schedule for sleep and her morning and afternoon naps range from 45 min-3 hours.

I had a non-napper. At 6 months she started on two naps that were 30-45 mins. It drove me insane but seemed to be all she needed!!! I almost lost my shit during that time. She started napping well when she started daycare... At 12 months :(. That sounds depressing but what I'm getting at is it won't last forever! At 2 my daughter now takes a very typical 2 hour nap in the afternoon!

About 3 - 4 weeks ago, LO's naps suddenly went down the toilet. He was previously on a solid 3 nap schedule up until close to 6 months. His morning nap was a blissful 2 -3 hours long. And then one day it became an hour, next day 40 mins, day after 20 mins, and now it's practically gone. We're lucky to get 20 mins! Afternoon naps he used to sleep for 30 mins in his crib and I was able to extend the nap easily by holding him for another 30 - 45 mins. Not anymore. :crying:

I've tried extending wake times, shortening wake times, nothing is working. He started rolling around the same time his naps went downhill. And now I'm trying to transition him from the Merlin suit to a sleep sack, and that is just adding the sleepless mess. His nights suck now too. (Wish he couldn't roll in the Merlin!)

If your LO is around 6 - 7 months, how many naps a day and how long are they? How do you deal with rolling in the crib? He just rolls around and cries, even though he can now insert his paci back in his mouth on his own... ugh, this is dreadful.

ETA: Not sure if he's ready to move to a 2 nap schedule, he always seems tired! Rubbing his eyes, yawning, etc., even within 30 mins of waking up. But how do you tell when they ARE ready to move to 2 naps?
