My dd lives in sleep and plays the buttons were annoying but you get used to them. We also used onesies. She was born in September.

We put her in size 1s because that's what the hospital had her in. I would stick up on bigger sizes and but open up a small pack of nbs when your lo is born. You can exchange the sizes later.

We only used a and a blankets because they're bigger and breatheable my Lo over heats very quickly so she wore a onesie and swaddle.

@rahlyrah: This was us!!! I had 5 or 6 zipper sleep n plays in nb and bought mostly 0-3 stuff initially bc everyone said not to really worry w/newborn...We rotated those nb sleep n plays for 5 weeks!!! Finally she got too long but I was so surprised that nb lasted so long. She was 6lb9oz born but she gained fairly quickly...

Can't help with the diapers or clothes since my LO ended up being under 5 lbs so she was in preemie/newborn forever. I did want to say we had a ton of receiving blankets and used them for EVERYTHING. We lined her rock n play and swing with them in case she spit up or had a diaper leak we could just switch out the blanket, used them as a burp cloth, nursing covers, arm covers for the chairs while nursing in case I sprayed, and as actual blankets. We found actual burp clothes to be not as handy because they don't cover as much of a surface area.

Fwiw my kid was 8.5 lbs and 22". The side snap tees I bought didn't fit her and neither did newborn diapers. :(. Her newborn Jammies fit for a week or 2 As much as I love to be prepared, I ended up giving hundreds of newborn diapers to my cousin who is expecting.

Get lots of burp cloths! And I did/do use receiving blankets and A&A blankets just with a diaper under, no pajama, at night. The halo sacks don't work well for us.

Also get 2 sets of sheets for wherever LO will sleep so if you have an accident with diaper or spit up, it's easy to do a quick change.

LO is almost 3 weeks old and he is in nb dipes,
and will be for awhile (he's 7 lbs 12 oz and they go up to 10 lbs). We are FLYING through them. In 3 weeks we've gone through 2 small packs, two 88 count boxes, and we are halfway through another 88 ct box. It doesn't help that he has lots of open air accidents right as we get the new dipe on, haha. Stock up on lots of wipes too!

The side snap short sleeved tops are a life saver. We use the Babies R Us newborn kind, and theyre great. BRU clothes run big, so he'll get some use out of them for awhile. We bough long sleeved too, but they're too warm. We use the short sleeved ones a lot bc it's so hot out (and our a/c is currently broken). When a/c was working, we had him in sleepers a lot, but they're actually a pain for dipe changes. Onesies are a lot easier because you don't have to totally undress. So I recommend a bunch of onesies b/c there are a crap ton of dipe changes in the beginning!

Since its so warm we don't use receiving blankets that much. We have a 4 pack of A&A blankets that we use for various things... tummy time, to cover his infant carrier in the pediatrician's office, burping, etc. for actual swaddling we use the swaddle me. He is a Houdini and always manages to get the receiving blankets up around his face!

@Foodnerd81: we found the receiving blankets pretty useless for swaddling, he outgrew them very quickly. However, we had a bunch! So we use them as an extra layer of protection on the changing table. If LO poops or pees on the table we can whip out a new r blanket instead of taking off and washing the changing pad cover.
A pack of A&A swaddle blankets definitely came in handy.
I didn't use side snap shirts either. Onesies, and pjs with the built in mittens!!!
I have no memories of the # of diapers. We did have lots of leaks and blowouts. We thought newborn size was too small so picked up a pack of premies. A few days later he grew and fit 1s! Try not to stress about being stocked up, you're close to a store so you can wait to see how big baby is and what you'll need.

I am no expert, as our baby is only a week old. But I think the side snaps shirts are great. Our hospital dresses the babies in the kimono shirts so I ended up taking about 5 from there. We were also encouraged to take receiving blankets, however all we have used are the A+A blankets(we have six of them). What we have used are the velcro swaddlers, we have about 5 of them. She is too wiggly and gets out of any swaddle we put her in.
I wouldn't buy anymore diapers until you see how big the baby is.
Since we are in AC most of the time, she wears long pants and a long sleeve kimono shirt. We have 3 NB onesies but she only wore it once (she's not a fan of over the head)
Take as much as you can from the hospital. Our nurses encouraged us to stock up there!!

My daughter was 7 lb 10 oz at birth. We went through one case of newborn diapers before we moved up to size 1s. For the first three weeks, she wore side snap tees to bed with a velcro swaddleme blanket on top. She is 7 weeks now and while she hasn't fit in her NB sleep n plays (she is long and skinny!) and Gerber onesies for a few weeks, she is just growing out of her other NB clothes now. Hopefully that helps!

I love the gowns too! Especially the gerber ones with the mitten cuffs. She sleeps in one every night.
@Foodnerd81: I didn't like having her little tummy bare, but Gerber makes side snap onesies that I LOVED! I'd suggest a mix of NB and 0-3 months stuff. I had an 8lb baby and she wore NB stuff through 4 weeks. I had like 4 onesies that *fit* her. Everything else (even the Gerber 0-3) was huge. It was fine for being at home, but at 3-4 weeks when we started leaving the house I wished I had more options ;)

@photojane: I have SO many different brands of swaddlers-- most aren't opened yet so I can return the ones I don't need, but I have Swaddle Me, A&A blankets (2 packs, only opened and washed one so far) , Miracle Blankets (these are hand me downs so washed and ready to go) , Woombie... I figure I will throw everything I can at it and see what works, then order more of our favorite from Amazon.

I think I do have plenty of those smaller receiving blankets then-- even though the new ones are the cutest, the others are fine and I have more than I need already. Back to Target they will go, most likely.

Sadie wore NB diapers until she was 3 months old! She only wore 1's for a month, and now she's fitting pretty perfectly in 2's at 5 months. My advice would be only open one box at a time. Then you can return any diapers you don't use for the next size up!

We never used the side-snap shirts, so I can't help there, but I think you have enough blankets. I'd definitely invest in a couple Swaddleme's though!

I was so adamant that we wouldn't need NB sizes but we did end up needing them even though LO was 8 and a half lbs! We did prefer the side snap shirts in the beginning. For bed she wore sleep gowns (with the elasticized bottoms) and a swaddle. The gowns make diaper changes a little quicker.

I never used receiving blankets, just A&A ones. I still use them everyday and she's six months now.

We didn't use NB diapers, but I had a big baby. I'd keep the packs you have and see how big your baby is. You can always return.

We had four side snap tees and she only wore one once. I really didn't like having her tummy exposed and the side snaps would ride us unless I tucked them into her pants, but I didn't want her in pants while her stump healed.
I'd get snap up sleep and plays and just use those for the first bit then switch to zip ups when you're not doing middle of the night changes anymore.

Not much to add except I second the burp cloths linked to above (Gerber prefold diapers) because they are a million times more absorbent than anything else. We still use them daily for random things at 9 months. Also - don't forget that target is awesome with returns. Keep the tags on things and exchange when you figure things out.

@lamariniere: Yeah I have 2 4 packs of the A&A blankets, plus Miracle Blankets for swaddling. The flannel ones I assume I'll use like you said-- put down to line the changing pad or whatever the baby is laying on, lay over the nursing pillow to catch leaks, that kind of thing, not to actually swaddle.

In addition to receiving blankets, do you have swaddle blankets? AA or similar? I found the typical flannel receiving blankets to be difficult to swaddle with since they don't really stretch, and they are also quite a bit smaller than the AA ones. I eventually cut up one of the flannel ones to use as wipes and use the others to line the diaper changer, and as a changing mat when out and about.

You are probably fine for the first week or 2 with the diapers you have. I wouldn't buy any more until you see how big your LO is and if the diapers work for you.

No advice for the clothes since I had a winter baby. :-)

It is hard to tell! Everyone told me the same thing; not to stock up on newborn diapers/clothes/etc. because the babies grow right out of them. However, my little peanut is 4 weeks today and still wears newborn diapers and a lot of his newborn clothes are too big on him! Poor dude is stuck wearing the same 6 onesies over and over again

Eta - my lo was 7 lb 10 oz, and at 1 month was 9 lbs. I think we used NB diapers for 3 weeks but she fit in NB clothes for 6-8 weeks depending on brand :)

@sorrycharlie: This might be dumb but how big is a "large case" od the NB diapers? Around 100? I was kind of thinking if the baby is born pretty big to start, we'll open the little pack, but if the baby is 7 pounds or less, we will just open the 96 pack to start?

@aprk: We will have the AC on, but probably will also be swaddling, so I was thinking the long sleeve ts and a diaper under the swaddle?

I don't have any receiving blankets. I think she wore the side snap shirts in the hospital and maybe once at home. She was in onesie's or sleepers at home.

@Foodnerd81: you can reeeeally stretch those onesie necks too :) I hated the sleeper gowns personally cause it was a ton of fabric to pull over their heads.

Good questions! I need to know answers too!

I am confused about whether I need more NB or 0-3 stuff too. I have lots of 0-3 onesies but only a couple NB size. I guess I really won't know until baby is born and we see how big it is!

I think I have about 6 receiving blankets and 3 large A&A swaddle blankets. That seems like enough, we will have to do laundry often anyways. If you were given 15 blankets and gifted more I'd return the extras if you can.

I figure that baby will really just be in onesies and blankets for the first few weeks in August since it'll be hot, so I didn't buy any "outfits" in NB size.

We used one large case of NB, 2 cases 1s then she fit in 2s

I personally didn't use receiving blankets except to line the changing pad

I used some of the gerber side snap onesies but for the most part just put her in zip sleepers - she was born end of sept - if I had a summer baby I'd prob just do onesies or sleepers if using AC.

Onesies, this is what we mostly used and still do.

I wouldn't have too much of any particular size as you don't know how big your baby will be. We didn't use newborn anything. Someone can always go to the store for you.

Get a couple baby nightgowns. I find these are the best for sleeping. Makes it so easy for a middle of the night diaper change.
