I think finding a care provider you can communicate openly with, is key. They are there to provide insight and advice, but also to accommodate your wishes (within reason). Many, many women, all over the world have elective c-sections. I had a vaginal birth, which had it's own challenges during recovery. Either way, having someone who knows how to advise you during recovery will be great.

@youboots: @jedeve: I also had IC before pregnancy ... 19 months pp, and it still hasn't returned! I was really fearful of the disruption of the pelvic floor and developing incontinence.

I have related conditions - interstitial cystitis and vulvodynia. I was scared about the impact a vaginal birth would have, but could find next to no research on it. I had very few symptoms by the end, and gave birth vaginally. I did request an epidural, but it failed to manage pain (it did immobilize me though). After that unpleasant experience, I had a med free birth the second time. Neither aggravated my IC or VV. In fact they are still in remission.

Hope that helps!

I had a scheduled csection with my first born, not really by choice because he was breech, but I had no issues having a csection.

I'm 30 weeks pregnant with my second child and will be having a repeat scheduled csection again. I went back and forth, but ultimately decided to have the csection for numerous reasons.

@snowjewelz: it is more for predicting exactly when they will deliver but to be honest I had an emergency c-section and my recovery was very easy. Much easier than my sister who had a vaginal and tore from front to back.

Hi! I have hip dysplasia so I was really scared to deliver vaginally. I was afraid of pain and further damage to my hips. Clearly not a life threatening reason but my OB was very supportive of doing a c section if that's what made me feel comfortable.
In the end I decided to try a vaginal birth - after 48 hours of induction and 2.5 hours of pushing, I needed a c section anyway. Pretty annoying at the time but now I can sorta laugh about it.
Unrelated to why I wanted a c section, I also have chronic neck pain that I hadn't even thought about. With all that pushing and hunching, I am 9 months pp and just starting to feel some relief in my back and neck. So if you have serious back and nerve issues, I would definitely think vaginal labor could be really stressful on your body! In addition to your OB maybe also talk to the doc you see about your other health issues. They may also have a recommendation. My hip doctor said a c section would be more favorable but didn't forbid me from vaginal. So had I chosen c sec and ran into roadblocks he would have advocated for me.

You'll just need to talk with your doctor about your medical history and all of your concerns. I can't see any reason why they wouldn't agree. I had an elective c-section at 41 weeks, I chose that over an induction for numerous reasons and the doctor had no issue with it. She talked me through the risks both ways and let the decision be mine. Insurance also had no issue and covered everything.

@snowjewelz: I am guessing it was more from a planning point of view of knowing when delivery and recovery would be rather than the spontaneous nature of a vaginal delivery.

I had an elective section because of family history issues. I brought it up to my doctor at 22 weeks and after laying it all out for her she immediately agreed, but warned me that not every doctor on the service would do an elective C if I happened to go early.
I did go early, but the dr. on call agreed to do it. As far as insurance, it wasn't an issue- I think if the doctor feels you need one, it is covered.
Honestly, I found my section to be a very easy recovery, probably because I didn't push (I wasn't as rested beforehand as I had hoped to be, had been in false labor and awake for 3 days). There are risks to any surgery, and abdominal surgery has its own issues, but I think any doctor would help you weigh those risks versus those that might occur from a vaginal delivery.

I have had both, and they were both a major shock to the system. After each of them I had some strange complications just from the system being overwhelmed. In your situation, I would want to have a very trusted OB and take their recommendation.

I think you've gotten some good advice here, but do remember that the recovery from a c-section is longer and harder than from a baginal delivery. It's a major surgery.

@aderyn: I'm sure you can talk it over with your OB. No personal experience on that front, but I know it happens all the time. HOWEVER, just so you know...during my first pregnancy, my fibromyalgia pain all but vanished. Honestly, with the exception of some low back issues (that would have happened anyhow), my pain was SO much better. Just som reassurance, in case.

@aderyn: I have no specific c section advice, as I had a vaginal birth, but I really do think you will be taken seriously. I have GI issues this pregnancy and it may take finding the right doctor to be a match for you but I have been told that hyper-motility (sorry I have no idea if that's one word or two or what) in the colon could even set off preterm labor for me. So with all your issues I think it's totally legitimate.

I know someone who had an elective c-section simply b/c she was so scared of vaginal birth, it was causing her mental distress. Your case sounds way more reasonable, so I definitely think it's possible. You may need to speak with a few different OBs first but I'm sure you can find someone who would agree to it.

I think this is absolutely you can discuss with your obgyn prior to conception as well - let her know at your next annual that you're going to be TTC and you're worried because of your other medical conditions. It should be no biggie! My sister-in-law and aunt have both elected for c-sections because of Chrons, and their doctors were completely on board.

I chose to have an elective c-section over being induced (or waiting to go into labor on my own). I didn’t have any pressing medical reason to think about and ultimately chose c-section over vaginal birth (and I think, you do!) but it was something my OB and I talked at length about, and she suggested that it would be a good option for me for a number of reasons specific to me/my body; which I (and DH) all agreed with.

My OB wouldn’t schedule one until post 40 weeks, but there was absolutely zero issue with my insurance covering it (never received any question from them about it at all) and received no pushback from my OB either. FWIW, both my OB, the practice and the hospital I delivered at are very pro-vaginal birth and natural laboring, etc. so it wasn’t like I delivered at a c-section-pro hospital.

I would just start an open dialog with your OB, and make sure that she/he has all your medical records. IMO, your OB is in a great position: they have your medical history plus vast experience delivering babies all sorts of ways in all sorts of situations.

ETA: I'm in the US.

@aderyn: Just wanted to chime in and say I know someone who has fibro and has had it for about 5 years now. When she was pregnant she felt great and was basically symptom free. Both times she was pregnant her fibro symptoms were not really there. Perhaps you might be so lucky! If not, hopefully your doctor feels a c-section is warranted.

Here (Ontario, Canada) they will not do an elective. Well, at my hospital any way. My friend begged! They said no.

That being said, I tore horrendously and the doctor said I could have a c section next time as she felt it was justified.

I think in the states OBs are more open to it? I don't know.

@kitty: That's great that they allowed her to do that!!!! I think society has to take a lot more steps towards acknowledging mental/emotional things as big of a deal as physical. I think neurological disorders are also very much underrated in terms of some people don't even believe fibromylagia is real! That is truly wonderful that they didn't make a big deal of it!

Not me, but a close friend of mine chose an elective c-section because she had a strong fear of vaginal delivery. The system was very supportive of her and I don't think they pushed her much in the opposite direction except for an initial run-down of how the risks are different.

Thank you all for your replies! Today is especially a day that made me post this, since my nerves are all messed up. I think things with me go deeper than even fibro, which makes it hard for pain management to even work for me. No medicines have ever worked for me. I wonder sometimes if there is a nerve disorder going on with me that has yet to be discovered.
