@Mae: I was always told 24-30 oz a day, but I do have friends whose babies ate slightly more, and my LO went through periods where she would drink less, about 18-20 oz a day.

In our case, it was because of the MSPI-- after I cut dairy and soy, she started drinking more like 26 oz a day.

@Mae: my child was always on the lower end of milk intake until maybe 8-9 months when suddenly he drank more like 24-30. He wanted more like 20-24 oz in a day (I also exclusively pumped). He was small to begin with and we started solids early so he did eat solids on top of that starting around 4-5 months. It was hard not to worry but he always gained weight well and seemed to know what he needed. I would say to just keep track and follow your baby's lead. You can't make them eat more than they want.

I bet 25 oz would be enough. You could aim for that and see if LO seems full & content and gains weight.

When we switched to FF around 4 months, LO drank around 24oz per day...and sometimes she would drink 5-6oz in one go, but the majority of the time she would graze and have 2oz here, 3oz there throughout the day. I learnt from when I was BF that I kept offering regularly even she didn't seem particularly thirsty because often she wouldn't demand. Even now at 10 months she won't demand, as such, but then when I offer right before a nap/bedtime she will down 6-7oz.

@twodoghouse: gah, no matter what it is so stressful! when I was still BF her first, I suspected she might not be eating enough but I sort of could put it out of my mind a little (at first until she started refusing bottles entirely) by saying "well maybe she's getting more than i think." But now that i know exactly how much she is taking, and exactly how much (they say) she should be taking, I'm obsessing about it. I'm glad that your ped seems to be really on top of watching their weight though! Fia is fine for weight right now, but I feel like that means that the LC sort of blew off my concerns about intake. But like, this is new. So we can't say "well what we're doing is working" bc what we're doing is new, and I obviously want to avoid a problem rather than fix it when/if it becomes apparent (if this is even a problem?). Babies man, stress. lol

I have no freeaking clue how much they eat and it drives me insane. I breastfeed first and according to the weighted feed they usually get 1 oz from the left and .5-.75 oz from the right side. Then we supplement with (high cal recipe) formula. Usually 1.25-1.5 oz of formula. I'd like to give them more but they spit up so violently if we try to bump it up that I think their tummies aren't big enough . Blake is still in the 0 percentile and Alice is at the eighth, so we are trying to get their weight up but it's hard when they don't take very big bottles. Instead we are nursing/FF 10-13 x per day right now. I THINK that means they are getting enough (and they are gaining weight now) but it's so stressful not knowing exactly how much they get from me. I do pump once per day and get 3-3.5 oz on the left and 1.5-2 oz on right. So I'm nervous that the weighted feed estimate is so far off from my pump output.

That's a lot! And many babies do eat that much, but 19 oz is the low level of normal. My LO rarely took more than 18 so we did fortify his feeds to higher calories. He's a small guy but fine...

@Chuckles: Her weight is on track (checked last week at the LC). But this whole bottle feeding this is new. It's a long story but she was nursing and supplementing and now just bottles (which she is sort of fighting which is why I'm concerned about intake). So I don't feel like her weight will mean all that much bc this is new. And I don't know when she goes back again... 4 mo I'd guess?

Our munchkin never ate close to the recommended amount either. I just figured that all kids have different appetites and metabolisms, just like adults. My husband isn't a big eater either. Wait until you see how much she weighs as the dr appointment. If she's staying on track with weight, then don't worry about it

Both of my sons have always exceeded the guideline amounts. But they are both big boys. My pediatrician said that she doesn't go by the guidelines because each baby metabolizes food differently - some require more and some less. She recommended I follow the baby's lead and see how their growth is.

Right now, Leo is taking 5 oz per bottle and he's formula fed. He's eating maybe 7-8 bottles over 24 hours. I don't keep track. He just dropped down to two overnight feedings. He eats every 2-3 hours during the day. I'm not sure how much he weighs - I think probably close to 13 pounds.

The most H will take from a bottle is 4 oz. At her age, she was only taking 3 oz. per feeding during the day (I send three bottles to daycare) and she ate three times when she was away from me. I don't know if you can use this formula, but they told me that she only needed an ounce per hour that she was away from me. At 4 months, she upped her intake to 12 oz. I don't know how much she's eating when we nurse, but we nurse a lot overnight (2-4 feedings at nine months).

@Mae: I am only just today increasing my 4mo's bottle from 4oz to 4.5oz. This is because he previously spit up so much that it seemed like a waste of pumped milk to give him a bigger bottle. He is consistently around the 80-90th percentile for weight and was a chunky 17lb 3oz at his 4mo checkup last week. Since I returned to work, his schedule has been:

Nurse once (if he wakes up after 6am) or twice (if he wakes up before 6am) in the morning
Three bottles (previous 4oz, now 4.5 oz) during the day
Nurse immediately when I get home, usually 2-3 hours after the last bottle
Nurse again before bed

So, 13.5oz (previously 12) of pumped milk during the day, plus another 3-4 nursing sessions.

If you assume 4oz per nursing session, then we are nowhere near the 32oz ceiling, more like 24-28oz per day. And given his size I am not worried at all about him eating enough.

all this is making me feel much better! We see the ped for her 2 month appointment/shots (boooo) on Friday so I'll definitely ask her opinion. But it was feeling a little crazy to try to push 30 oz on her at this point when she seems content in the low-20s range.

@Charm54: This is basically the schedule I try to keep with her, except she wakes at 5am to eat (but she only seems to want 2 oz at 9:30 and 5am, so I guess she just splits that last feeding haha)

I thought babies were supposed to eat 1-1.5 oz for each hour of the day so 24-36 oz total. I doubt DS1 ever ate any more than the minimum and although he is small, he has always been healthy. DS2 is also around 11.5 lbs and I was told that's average. It's funny how different practices have different levels of concern.

I learned that number of oz babies consume is between 2 and 2.5 times their weight in lbs up to a max of *around* 32 oz. So, I guess this formula applies til around 14 lbs.

According to this rule, your baby should be taking between 23 and 28.75 oz each day. Here is a calculator:

http://www.fourfriends.com/cgi-bin/milk.pl?lbs=11&oz=8&feed=6&formula=11

ETA: This calculator doesn't factor in the 32 oz ceiling, so don't use it if your baby weighs more than 14 lbs unless you want to drive yourself insane by feeling pressure to pump 40 oz per day!

I combo fed (EPed and supplemented).

At that age I'm pretty sure she was taking 4 oz bottles every 3-4 hours. She STTN 10pm-8am at that age, so the majority of her feedings were during the day.

I think our feeding "schedule" was 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, 8pm, 10pm ?

At 4 months she started taking 6oz bottles which cut down on the number of feedings. She also started pushing her bedtime up to 7pm so she dropped that 10pm feeding.

I don't think she started drinking more than 24-26oz a day until she hit 6 months. At that age she was drinking 32oz until she started eating more solids and now at 10mo she takes between 18-22oz depending on the day.

I think this will be hard to judge since you can't go by strictly the FF recommendations OR the BF recommendations since you are doing a combo. Maybe try to split the difference?

At 2 months, Xander was nursing 7 times a day, but I'm honestly not sure how much he was getting. We did a weighted feed at 6 weeks (and again at 5 months) and he was eating roughly 3.8 oz during that feed, but I'm not sure how much he was eating his other feeds. I'm guessing he got about ~26 oz during the day.

When he started daycare at 12 weeks, he would drink ~15 oz during the day plus nurse three times at home, so it's possible he was getting close to 30 oz of breast milk, but it's hard to know for sure.

My inclination is that if she's sleeping through the night with only one wake up to eat, she's probably getting enough food. At this age, I would think she would wake to eat more if she was hungry. But that's just a guess.

When R started day care at 12 weeks, she would drink 3-5ozs bottles at day care. She would have 3-4 bottles there, depending on the last time she nursed in the morning.

We switched to formula at 6 months, and at 11 months she was still only taking 5-6 oz bottles. That was 4 bottles a day and 3 solid meals.

I don't know exactly how much my LO gets because she's still nursing part of the time. But I can almost guarantee that she's never gotten 30 oz in one day. She gets around 14 oz of pumped milk while I'm at work. Then she nurses 3x (once when I get home from work, once before bed, and once in the MOTN). She only nurses from one side so I assume she gets somewhere around 3oz. So that would be 23-24 oz/day.

I believe FF babies tend to eat more, though. My best friend's son was FF and I think he'd eat closer to 32oz/day (he's also WAY bigger than my LO).

So I'm struggling to get my baby to eat "enough." It's entirely possible this is just something we need to work up to because of all of our feeding issues... but I'm wondering how much babies her age usually eat (and thus how hard I need to work to get her to eat more more more).

Our LC said that she should be taking about 28-30oz/day. She's 11.5 lbs @ 2 months, if it matters-- but I thought babies take about the same amount of milk between 1-6 months? (but maybe that is only breastfed babies?)

At this point I'm EPing for her and then supplementing with formula. I make about 15 oz of breastmilk per day, so anything beyond that will be formula. I think the "problem" (which is really awesome lol) is that she sleeps so well at night. So she goes 11 hours (ish) with only 1 feeding when I think most babies her age eat 2+ times overnight.

If left to her own devices, it seems she wants to eat every 3 hours during the day and once at night. She rarely eats more than 4oz at a time, and right before bed and MOTN she only wants 2 oz. So if I just feed her when/what she wants, she'd only be eating 20 oz/day--- only 2/3 of the recommended amount.

I'm trying to shorten her feeding schedule to every 2.5 hours to get in an extra feeding and get us closer to 25 oz at least. But I'm just wondering if all babies really eat close to 30oz/day? Or if that just average and a lot of babies eat more or less?
