We don't have fancy china. We got married not too long after we bought our first house and I never got around to picking a set I liked. I figured I'll just wait until one comes up and in the meanwhile, we'll use cheap Ikea plates. Years later, we still haven't bought decent plates! I did find silverware I like though and we have enough for 12 or 16? Half of it is still in the box. We don't entertain much.

@Smurfette: oooo, good point! We can have 8 ppl/ 10 if squished in at our dining room table right now, so I guess we'd have to do an extra table that could, in therory, have different plates... I think it might still bother me though :D

We skipped the fancy dishes. We have a complete set of 6 C&B everyday dishes (bowls, plates, mugs etc). I bought additional plates last Thanksgiving. If hosting functions at our home becomes the norm I will buy more of everything. I have an old set of dishes I use when I need a few extra. DH likes using paper plates and plastic forks and knives anyway, so we usually don't run out of dishes.

@.twist.: extra glasses are genius! i am a freak and much prefer to drink out of square glasses. my favorite cups are these big clear green plastic ones i got at target that have square bases and i've yet to find a glass equivalent, but you better believe when i do, i will buy them by the dozen! =D

@MarieJ: if we had real china, it would still be boxed too! haha. we use as our everyday plates, so they get used all the time, but we haven't opened some of the additional pieces- like the pasta set.

@Foodnerd81: we have a C&B set that was mine from before DH (haha, i guess getting married after 25 means you come with more baggage, in every sense =D ) i looooved it, but it didn't hold up well & the glaze on most has cracked and many chipped =( i guess you could say we have a decent sized family- DH has 2 siblings & a BIL, i have just one not yet married sibling, and both sets of parents, i assume the 2 unmarried siblings will both marry in the next few years & we plan on having 2-3 kids, but sometimes people do different dishes for the kids. now i'm leaning toward 16 place settings....

@.twist.: My mom only let us use Tupperware glasses, so I have no idea! :) But I think it depends on the glasses-- some are thicker and heavier, so less likely to tip over, and if they tip, less likely to break, where the ones we chose are a little thinner and more delicate, so if they tip, yeah, they stand a good chance of breaking. Plus, we had Formica counters growing up and we have quartz or granite here, so it's harder and again, more likely to break them.

All that to say-- yeah, I don't know. We haven't broken THAT many but I think we need to get some plastic ones for when LO gets here.

@Foodnerd81: Do you find they break more now a days? I swear when I was a kid we had the same set of glasses for my entire childhood. In fact, I think my mom still has some of the original ones. I think in a year or so I'll need to either get another replacement box (if the set still exists) or replace our glasses. Which I don't want to do because I LOVE ours.

We don't have good china-- when we were registering, we made a deal that we'd get a not super expensive set once we have a big house, which won't be for a few more years. But our everyday stuff we have 10 and that works for now. It was discontinued by C&B so there is no replacing things that break, but they are pretty heavy duty and they are casual.

For good stuff-- how big is your family? If you have a really large family, I feel like it would make sense to buy extras, but if it will be the very rare occasion that you have a lot of people coming, it probably matters less. Then again... things do break!

@.twist.: We've bought extra glasses and I'm glad we did. In my experience, glasses break way more often than plates. But we have WAY too many glasses in general-- went a little nuts registering, and people love to gift fun bar glasses!

@mrs. bird: seriously! I found an amazing set of glasses a few years ago and bought an extra box *just in case*, well, wouldn't you know it we've had to use quite a few of the extra box glasses because of people breaking them! It's helped out SO MUCH.

I only have ten of our good stuff, but it was my great-grandmother's so it is very hard to get additional settings. I have 16 of our everyday and like having that much. It's good for entertaining and not stressing if any break, etc.

how many place settings of your dishes do you have?

our lenox 'china' (it was considered fine china by the stores i think because it's bone china, but they aren't at all fancy, we use them as our ever day dishes, they're white) we have 8 place settings. i just found more on amazon warehouse for 75% off so i ordered another set of 4. that'll bring us up to 12, but i'm wondering if 16 would be better..... mostly for holidays in the future if we host.

how many place settings do you have? what do you think an ideal number would be?
