My parents, in-laws, and my sister live within 30 minutes of us. I have several friends (including my BFF) who live 5-10 minutes away who I would have no issue leaving them with.

Good- grandparents are amazing and will flex their schedules for us, but both sets live an hour away. Locally, DH has an awesome guy friend who is the best babysitter of all time. He has come through for us in a couple emergencies and is our regular date-night sitter.

Desperate- We have some local parent friends with kids similar in age to DD that would take her for a bit if I reeeeeeeeeeeeally needed help. Once we have DD2 I don't know if this will be an option anymore (especially since all but one set of them are expecting around the same time as we are!)

Close? Maybe three/four people I can use in an emergency. It's not that I don't trust them it's that they are adults with lives of their own. So they're not regular babysitters but I could definitely trust them with my daughter in an emergency.

Two hours away I have my MIL and my brothers wife. Both of whom would babysit in an instant!

Good: Family (2 sets of grandparents are close by, my mom is about an hour away), Our standard sitter, plus probably about 10 other girls we could ask at daycare in a pinch.

Desparate: My sister (1+ hour away), neighbors (3 neighbors have daughters in the 15-18 range we could ask)...I also have 3 or 4 friends who have never watched my girls but absolutely would in a bind...

A lot. There are at least 6 places I could leave her overnight comfortably. And on other 6 or so that would work in a pinch. And a few more in a panic, but we have a huge family. I'm taking my cousin who has 5 kids of her own up on babysitting T next week- she's been offering she's even offered to take her overnight.

My SIL lives 10 min away.....so she would definitely help! Or I have 4 super close friends who could help in a bind.....but they each have 2-3 kiddos of their own so I'd hate to saddle them with my two (although they would take them without question!) unless absolutely necessary.

2 willing and easy. One is a SAHM friend with a baby 2mo older than mine, so truly I wouldn't even need to pack a bag. Another would be my in laws who live 30 min away and who will be starting "Grandmacare" in a week. Other than that, maaayyybbbeee some other but I'm too neurotic about leaving my baby with other people for more than a couple hours without any prep time (which is usually what and emergency would be).

This answer is based on a nursing baby that's only 5 months old, though. I imagine as he ages it would be better/easier. (Less gear, easier with the food.)

I can think of 4, two are family, two are friends. It's not so much my choice with my son, he's got to be willing to go as well.

We've had emergencies and have two mom friends who we can drop the toddler off at any time. We have several more friends who will babysit for doctors appointments occasionally. And my MIL will call out of work to watch my toddler if we need overnight help. But now with a newborn those numbers might change.

In an emergency I would leave my LOs with DCP (a couple blocks away) or whichever neighbor has a car in the driveway. My block is filled with families with young kids. Between their house and mine they should be fine. We haven't hired a babysitter and our closest family is about 90 minutes away.

Good babysitters: my parents but they both work FT. My dad works about 5 minutes away but has a demanding job. My mom works about and hour away.

Desperation babbysitters: My brother. He's fantastic with the kids. But he just moved home and he had a small peraonal medical scare a few weeks ago that makes it a little more iffy. My in-laws. I can literally look out my window and see their house but babysitting is not their thing. My MIL even told me that I should "keep my family scared" of her watching DD1 so she wouldn't have to if I went into labor with DD2. I'll do anything before I ask them.

I'd ask my best friend but she lives about an hour away and has a 9 month old so getting the girls to her quickly would be a challenge.

In town: My friend or DH's coworker/his wife would be the closest two. About 40 minutes away: My best friend or DH's brother/SIL or SIL's sister. About 2 hours away: My parents or my sister. Not too bad I guess! We've used them all at one time or another except my sister and DH's coworker .

The closest we came to this was when I had emergency gall bladder surgery 6 weeks after giving birth during Dh's busiest month at work. It was hell and I had 0 notice to get anything arranged or prepared.

I am so so so lucky we live minutes away from family. My mother took the girls for a week(no easy feat with a 2 year old and 6 week old!) , bringing them to visit me when I was awake. My 2 local sisters were also a huge help and my ILs also came up (they live OOt) when the girls moved back home.

Basically both our families are amazing and I am so so lucky and thankful to have them

Good option - my parents, but they need four hours of notice because they live 300km away.

In case of real real emergency we have some close friends or our neighbours, but B would be pretty unhappy about both of those options because he's very very shy.

If we classify "emergency" as "can keep my kid alive and would be willing to do that"... a lot. Like probably 10+ people I'd trust if it was a true emergency.

But people I'd ask to cover for something important-but-not-no-one-is-dying.. my parents, my sister in law... maybe... that's sort of it. I would trust any of our friends (especially those with kids) but they have their own kids to manage so I'd feel bad asking.

If by emergency you mean I need someone RIGHTNOW, I have three good mom friends in the neighborhood who I could call (two of their hubbies as well). Between DH and I we have 2 or 3 good non-parent friends who would bring willing but less experienced, and are a taxi ride away. Finally, two of my regular babysitters live a walkable distance in the neighborhood so I could ways try them. My SIL is about 2 hours away, and would happily come in less urgent cases (or to take over for a local emergency sitter) as soon as she could get away from work. She works in medicine, however, so can't always be super flexible.

With baby #3 on the way, I've thought this through!

GOOD BABYSITTERS: Our kids' teacher is available for babysitting. The kids love her (and vice versa), so she would be an ideal babysitter!

DESPERATION BABYSITTERS: There's two other people who the kids know (both guy friends of mine), and they could do an OK job watching them. But if any tricky issues came up, they'd probably both call me in a panic. So we'd only use them if we were truly desperate.
