@peachykeen: How lucky that they sent you two!!

@agold: We maxed out our FSA contributions this year with the expectation that anything left over after the hospital bills will be used on nursing supplies (freezer bags, etc.). It's a lot easier mentally to spend money that I'd otherwise never see directly! Also knowing how heavily I used my PISA last time makes spending ~$250 on another pump seem not so bad, even if it were out of pocket.

@Gin: My hospital uses Ameda pump kits which can be used with a PISA, but they don't come with a manual pump :bummed: That would be a nice bonus though! I got one last time when my son was in the NICU.

Another trick is to ask the hospital for a pumping kit after you deliver (I have a one time copay) The set will come with a manual pump, pumping tubes and bottles for a symphony pump (can also be used for a PISA).

@nanilani: I agree about a smaller pump being easier. I haven't actually looked into all the different pump options since I got the pumps I have for free. I suppose if I find that I may pump more in the car this next time around, I would consider buying a smaller pump. However, I don't like buying something if I get a sufficient alternative for free. The pumps cost so much money!

I had 2 pumps with each pregnancy plus 2 manual pumps.

With DD1, I got a PISA through my insurance before she was born and then got a Spectra when I switched to DH's insurance (very necessary since I EP'ed for DD1 and the PISA didn't cut it!)

With DD2 I ordered the Spectra (through insurance again) from the get-go, but they somehow sent me 2 Spectras? And given my history I didn't bring it to their attention! I still have it in the box and will probably donate it to a new mom if the first one holds up through this pumping journey.

I actually prefer using my manual pump for short outings - it's faster and way less annoying for me than hooking up to an electric. I have both the Medela and Lansinoh manual pumps and the Lansinoh works WAY better than the Medela.

@agold: I pumped in the car all the time! Thank goodness for a car charger b/c my PISA would have torn through some batteries. I'm thinking the smaller Freestyle would be easier to use while driving if I need to pump on my commute again.

@josina: I forgot my pump kit at home a few times, and it definitely ate into my day whether I had to go back home to get it or pop over to nurse my son at daycare. Neither of those would be a viable option anymore since we've moved and baby #2 won't be close to my office until he's almost one

@josina: @MrsSCB: I pumped at home and on my commute all the time as I had trouble expressing as much as my son was consuming the last few months. If I had only ever needed to pump at work, I probably wouldn't be considering a third pump. Also I'm a little worried that I may have run my PISA into the ground after so much use.

I just had the one PISA for work, and pumped until my son was one. If I needed to pump on a weekend for whatever reason, I brought it home. But I mostly just left it at work. I had a manual pump at home for any pumping emergencies (lol).

Oh wow, I had never considered having a pump for work/home/travel.. but it makes so much sense! I have a Spectra S2 for pumping at work, and an Ameda and Hakaa manual pumps for home. I did have an Ameda Purely Yours that I got from insurance through my last baby, but I just gave it away for free on fb last week since I didn't think I'd need it haha.

With DS, I just had one which was a pain to lug back and forth from work everyday. I forgot it at least once and had to turn back around making me 30 minutes + late for work.

With DD, I have the PISA from DS, and an additional PISA that I keep at work. I rarely pump at home (even less than I did with DS) so it's not often I use the old one. That one came with the bag and has a battery so if I need one on-the-go I use that one.

Give me all the pumps!! :silly: Although, I wouldn't buy any because they are so expensive! For my first baby, I used the medela that insurance supplied. Then my friend gave me the same pump she got from insurance and it changed my life being able to have one at work and one at home. Now, with baby #2, I got another pump from insurance and I'm going to keep it in my car (because yes, I pumped while driving sometimes). So it will be 3 of the exact same pumps for me!

I have 2 spectra S2s and 2 manuals for travel and discretion (I regularly get my bags screened going in and out of office buildings). My husband insisted on two pumps because he got sick of me carting around my pump bag and laptop. I was using just one manual and decided it way way too inefficient and got a second to pump both sides at once.

I pumped until 17 months and in the most awkward places. My manuals were an absolute necessity. By far the best $60 my HSA has spent :-)

I had 5, because 2 burned out and one just wasn’t good. I had a work pump and a home/travel pump at all times. My car has an AC outlet so I never had trouble pumping on the go.

I’ve saved my old Spectra and PISA and a friend just sent me her S1 and I’ll get a new one through insurance so I’ll have 3 for next time.

You can hack a Spectra to take the Medela bottles and it’s such a great pump. The S1 has a rechargeable battery.

@Mrs. Toad: Thanks for that perspective! I know from my last pumping experience how tedious it gets to be toting everything back and forth to work everyday. It sounds so nice to have a pump provided at work! I also ended up pumping on the drive home almost every day, so I'm thinking the freestyle may come in handy then too. I know I *can* do it all with something bulky like the PISA, but I'm not sure I want to if I don't have to. Then again, I could be getting ahead of myself if nursing baby #2 doesn't work out.

@Boopers: Great to know about the Spectra adapter, but are you trying to feed the crazy?? Lol

@skinnycow: @Boopers: I didn't include the manual pump on the list since I wouldn't consider it as a regular use pump, but I'm definitely buying one of those too (my old one was ruined). So convenient for taking the edge off in the early days. Also the low price makes that one a no-brainer.

I used a PISA for LO1 and I’m currently using a Spectra S2 with LO2. I’m using all my Medela parts and accessories with the Spectra. There is an adapter you can buy on Amazon that allows you to use the Medela flanges with the Spectra tubing and backflow protector.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DGEDVUM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_CyZGAb8Y6VPJS

I had two. My main pump was a Medela Freestyle. I love it for all the reasons you mentioned - it was small and light and I didn't need an outlet to pump.

I also had a manual pump (whatever the Medela one is called).

I was given a Freemie for my first (didn't have insurance able to pay for it). It is definitely not travel friendly. I got a freestyle for my second. At work, there are Symphonies, so I got the tubing for that as well.

So in all honesty, I have one for work, one at home (rarely used), and one for travel (also rarely used). It was nice to have them all.

Any other moms out there (especially WOHMs or EPers) want all the pumps? How many did you end up with and use reguarly?

I'm putting together a (private) registry for baby #2 for the completion discount and am trying to talk myself out of adding the Freestyle b/c I already have two double electrics to start with. I still have the PISA I used for over a year with DS (need to buy new parts) and a brand new Sonata I got through insurance. But the Freestyle would be so easy to carry around on odd outings! I pumped 3+ times a days for a little over 13 months with DS, so it sounds so nice to have a pump for work (Sonata), a pump for home (PISA), and a travel pump (Freestyle) this time around. The Spectra sounds amazing too if I weren't so invested in all the Medela accessories :silly: Breast pumps are covered by my FSA, so it feels like it's "free" to get a third pump even though I know it's not really. Has anyone else out there amassed a collection or am I crazy?
