Now that we moved to a small town (and am a SAHM myself) I find almost every woman of child-bearing age who obviously has children stays home. DS was born in NYC and practically all the moms I knew were SAHMs. Now we live in a city full of expats, so many of the women are not even allowed to work because of work visa issues. I can't think of one mom I know who works outside of the home. Even if they went back to work for a little bit, the difference in take home and daycare was minimal. Most of the SAHMs I know are not SAHM by choice; their salary was less than childcare (especially after having 2 or 3 kids) so they had to quit working. Some are happy at home, others are definitely not, and I really feel for them. </p>
