My husband has three siblings. I always felt like I was taking care of my siblings and my husband felt like someone was always bugging him and like life was chaotic. </p> <p>I never liked the idea of an older child caring for younger siblings and neither of us deals well with chaos and noise. I'm my mother's only child and she was my primary after my oarents split at age 2. When I was 8 my Dad had my brother with wife #2. Then when I was 20 my Dad married my current step-mom who brought a step-brother that's my age and a step-sister who's between me and my half-brother.</p> <p>I consider myself an only child because I didn't grow up with my steps, and my half-bro is so much younger and I only saw him on weekends. But I love my siblings!</p> <p>I do think being an only child is part of why I only want to have one kid. I had a great childhood and had many perks from being an only child. But ultimately, I think I'll be happier and a better mother with just one.
