We went from bottle to 360 cup. We did try the sprouted cups for a little bit before the 360 cup but those cups leaked too much. We just use 360 cups. I think I have 8 cups for the twins. We use them for milk and water. Super easy to clean. I don't have to worry about mold if I take the piece off.

DS1 did not understand sippy cups at all - like until he turned 2. And he hated any straw cup with resistance. So we did the Tommee Tippee straw cup with handles and take n toss straw cups to learn. Once he was good at straws we used the 9oz Tommee Tippee straw cups or the Playtex ones with the leakproof seal cut out (4 total). Then we found the Zoomi cups which we love except it's not good for travel bc it doesn't have a lid or anything, so we had 2 of those for home. He practiced drinking water from an open cup in the bath at 18 months and we introduced a Munchkin 360 at 20. The school he started at 2 years uses Dixie cups and he drinks milk from a Foogo in his lunch.

Now at 31 months he does Duralex juice cups at the table, Contigo Gizmo water bottle, and Foogo for milk.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We have the larger size - I guess it's 11oz? I usually just run warm/hot water through the straw, and I have these skinny little brushes (I think they are Munchkin brand - they were super cheap at Target) that fit into them for when they seem gungy.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: we went right to straw cups. He still uses them now at 3 but can use an open cup too... just easier to avoid spills with a straw one. My daughter is 10 months and uses a straw one now too (weighted munchkin one for water, take and toss for smoothies).

@tlynne that's what I have been trying to do. I got a bunch of little paper Dixie cups to try (although maybe it is better to do a heavier cup? I dunno). He LOVES using it and thinks it is so fun but he still pours most of it on himself. He is 20 months, so maybe he's behind?!

@MrsADS: Have you tried just putting one-two sips in a very small cup? This is how we taught ours (and it's how the Montessori schools teach this skill).

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: For DS1, we didn't use a sippy or straw cup. He learned to use an open cup before age 1. For DS2, because he has swallowing difficulties, we do use straw cups, and have for almost a year. He's just now transitioning to not needing one (at almost two). We have several, but I used the 'take and toss' type that I found at Big Lots for $2/5 cups. I bought ten, and used them until they were worn out. I think I've replaced them all twice.

We didn't really have an in-between. We tried the Wow Cup for a few weeks, but LO didn't really get it.

She goes to a Montessori school, so at 13 months, she started drinking from an open cup.

We do use a Klean Kanteen bottle when we're on the go, but otherwise, just normal cups.

Well, I'm impressed by all you who got your young toddlers onto open cups early. My 20 month old is terrible with an open cup. He pours all the water all over himself, or pours all the water into his mouth all at once and starts coughing and choking. I guess he will figure it out eventually?! I don't know.

We have about a thousand sippies (feels like). We send the Munchkin straw sippies to school and also use the Take & Toss sippies (the straw ones and also the spouted ones). We also have some Munchkin 360 cups we use for water sometimes. And we have some old ones when we first started trying out sippies that had a soft spout.

Washing sippy cups (especially with straws) is the bane of my existence!!! I can't wait till we're past this stage, but it seems like it might be a while.

I work at night so I don't have to deal with daycare, but my kiddo transitioned from breast to foogo to open glass cup. He's been drinking out of an open glass cup since 18 months. I use ball jelly jars because they are pretty difficult to break. If we are on the go, I still break out the foogo. My kids basically only drink water unless it is at meals so spills don't bother me for the most part.

LO (almost 17 months) can (and loves to) drink out of an open glass with help, but she also travels with a water bottle (as do DH and I). LO's has a straw top, but we can change that out for a screw top when she is older. She has the same straw-top bottle in a different color that we use for one bottle of breast milk each day.

So, we have two "kid cups" (the Pura Kiki) in active rotation.

I think this is one of those areas where there isn't really a correct way to do it. You don't have to worry about a "transition cup" unless you really want to. We used closed-lid sippy cups from about 12-18 months, then just started giving her open cups after that and she took to them pretty quickly. We put a bib with a scoop-bottom on her in case she spills any.

We never did sippy cups, but from about 10m to about 18m, we had him use these cheap Munchkin straw cups I found for $3 at Target. We had four.

Around 18m, we switched to the Munchkin 360 cups. Again, we had four. Around 20m, he was able to use an open cup, so we give him that for mealtimes in his high chair, and we still use the 360s for traveling and snacks.

My kiddo has 2 munchkin 360 cups and 4 basic playtex sippy cups. She also has a straw cup that we only use for smoothies. We have so many mainly for convenience. We didn't need trainer cups, she learned how to drink from an open cup very quickly. At 20 months, we use small jam jars as glasses around the house. When we're out, at work (I'm a nanny and kiddo comes with me) and at night, we use the sippy cups. She learned to use an open cup around 15 months.

We never did sippy cups. At 12 months we went from bottle to straw, and at some point we introduced the 360 cups, and then eventually open cups before 2; now she uses a mix of all 3. I have 2 fogo's and 1 camelbak that are for school/outings, then random stuff at home to use.

We started DS on the munchkin 360 cups with handles at 8 months just to practice. He also BF and had BM bottles. He's now 17 months and drinks from a steel large munchkin 360 without handles, a kleen kanteen or an open cup. We bought 4 stainless steel tumblers for him. So he has 1 munchkin, 1 water bottle and 4 open cups. Daycare transitions all kids to open cups once they move into the older toddler room at 16 months.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Yup, I meant something like the munchkin 360. We actually bought one at one point and DS totally didn't get it. We tried it a couple times and it was a no go. My niece, on the other hand, much prefers those over sippies. I think everyone ends up going through a few cups to try before figuring out what works for them.

I honestly didn't want a ton of cups around, so I made sure my son could drink from an open cup at meal times. We use glass at our house (Duralex shatter proof).

Spouted cups are a no no, straws are fine, but I didn't want to be cleaning them and I did use a training cup (it had a ton of pieces and puzzled together rather weirdly, so I don't recommend it anymore) that was basically closed and used the pressure of the upper lip to release the liquid.

FWIW my kid was drinking from an open cup at the age of 1 and had a ton of oral motor issues, so it can be done.

My almost-2 LO has 9 straw cups. He started using them when he was about 10mos. We send him to school with two with cow milk every day. When he was still getting breast milk he got 3 smaller ones. He also has 1 for water that stays at school for the week, and one in use at home for water.

For our current rotation, that means four are in use at any given time, two are dirty, three are clean and ready to pack/use the next day.

@ShootingStar: just so I'm on the same page...transition cup would be a Munchkin 360?

@SweetiePie: in the next daycare room they may provide Dixie cups. I'll have to find out, but if that's the case I could very well skip a trainer/ Munchkin at home.

We have a Camelbak Eddy for him as well, but haven't introduced it. The other stainless sprout sippy is on permanent hiatus since he drinks it like he does a bottle.
