I think we'll dress DD in outfits more when she is older. For now, she is only 3weeks and it's summer so she lives in onesies. It's too hot for footed sleepers, but I'm sure she'll be wearing them in a month or so.

@looch: I agree. I LOVE the gap. But I do think that until after 6 months, it isn't worth paying the high $$. The only gap I own is what I was gifted, and a few pieces I found in the clearance rack. Perhaps once he's over a year old I will be able to invest in some gap pieces.

@Jholler25: - wanna know the crazy thing?! Even though carters shrinks a lot... they were the only brand of NB that fit Cobi!! He was 7 lbs 1.4 oz at birth and dropped to 6 lbs 9 oz when we left the hospital. So he wasn't even super tiny, but NB was HUGE on him!! Someone had got him a preemie onesie, which I thought was crazy, and it was the only clothing that fit him for 3 weeks! BRU also is a little smaller, so those sleepers were the first to fit!

@regberadaisy: yeah agreed... I'm so cheap. I won't pay more than $5 for one piece of clothing... especially 0-12 mos! They are in each size for only a few months, if even. However, I must say the gap sleepers I got from my SIL are next to none in quality, coziness and cuteness!! I would love some more. I think once he's a little older I will feel a little better about paying more like $10 an item ;)

@jholler25: You would be surprised at how much force those little baby poops can have. We CD 90% of the time. We've never had a CD poop explosion, but I can't even count the number of disposable poop explosions that we've had.

@hilsy85: You might want to look into a side-snap gown. That way you don't have to worry about putting anything over your newborn's head. I bought this because of the reviews and it's absolutely perfect for a fall/winter baby. The material's thick and it's really convenient, although I never got to use it much because it was too warm when LO was born (summer baby, no air conditioner).

@mediagirl: it was our post partum instructions. I had to take his temp a couple times I day, as well as mine. I'm glad I did too because for awhile his temp was 96! We had to do lots of skin to skin the first week to keep his temp up.

As for easy outfits in 3-6 months, I'm with the pro romper crowd. It's perfect for layering in the fall/winter. I plan on putting her in a long sleeve onesie with a romper/overalls and a knitted sweater over. If it's cold, I can add thighs under. It should be cozy enough indoors during the winter and not so thick that I can't throw on a footmuff or snowsuit for when we're outside.

Here are 2 of my most recent finds (Gap EU had an awesome promo recently).

This was very cute but a bit thin:
http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=82231&vid=1&pid=914968&scid=914968002

This will be part of her new fall essentials:

In our case, it was user error...disposables have wings that you're supposed to fan out, and it wasn't fanned out all the way. Plus the poop was a bit runny, so it leaked.

I don't think blowouts happen more or less in disposables or cloth. IMO it's a combination of things, like incorrect sizing, diaper is already too wet, runny poop, etc.

@regberadaisy: ok so it sounds like I should get more long sleeved onesies that can be worn with leggings, and some plain short sleeved onesies for layering when he's wearing a sleeper (depending on the temperature, since he'll be swaddled for sleeping I imagine). Does that sound right?

And yes definitely planning on holding off on actually buying any clothes til after my 2nd shower! I was just trying to organize his stuff and got overwhelmed!

@jholler25: DS did have quite a few blowouts. We cloth diaper, which helps, but there were still a few outfits that had stains (and two sleep'n'plays that we just threw out - seriously the poop was from calf to neck!)

One thing, try BacOut. It's a stink/stain remover and a spray right after taking the clothes off helps keep stains from setting. Wash or rinse clothes in cold water first, again to keep stains from setting. Sunning is a great way to get stains out too. I just lay the item out on a flat surface in the sun for a few hours and the stain vanishes. Just don't forget about it, and check it now and then because you don't want the natural colors of the outfit to fade. It really does work though.

Thicker fabrics, and avoiding lighter colors helps to keep the stain from showing on the outside of the outfit. If the stain was only on the inside, I would still dress DS in that outfit since no one could see it. Or if it was hidden by shorts/pants.

@regberadaisy: @looch: I hope I'm not threadjacking....But WHY do blowouts occur - is it just because it's SO much poop sometimes? Diapers are expensive! It seems like for that $$$ they should hold even high volumes of poop in the diaper! We are not CDing, and I had some tiny hope that maybe it happens less with disposables? No?

We had one poop blowout...it happened when we were out to brunch...thank goodness I had dressed my son in a dark blue Ralph Lauren polo one piece and had a blanket. It was hilarious because I came back down from changing him and my friend wanted to hold him, ha ha. Little did she know!

@hilsy85: oh no no, I meant short sleeved for layering. With Fall coming I'm starting to buy more long sleeved onesies for M. So she'll go to daycare with long sleeved onesies, leggings and a cardigan/hoodie. Layers that way if she's warm they can just take a layer off.
And honestly I would hold off on buying anything yourself until baby is here unless you are seriously lacking in one department. M has soooo many cute outfits that were gifted. Btu she hardly wore any of them. But really in the younger months where does she have to go? You don't want to go out because she's so tiny. Maybe just pick LO 2-3 cute outfits for the holiday season if you see them on sale now.

And re:shrinking we have a whole bunch of different brands as well and did not find that Carters shrink more than other. I think their sizing is just a bit smaller than other brands. Or it could be because M is really tall.

@jholler25: that's still too $$$ for my cheap a$$ :P Because they grow out of them SO fast in these younger months.
re: blowouts. There def are A LOT! Just make sure you hand scrub the soiled part of the clothing before you throw it into the hamper. Being careful not to spread the poop - hahha. For particularly bad blowouts I put a little shout before I throw it into the laundry.

@mrstilly: Okay this is my concern, that poop and/or poop blowouts are going to ruin all of these cute pastel pants and onesies that I have bought from Baby Gap.

Oh just wanted to mention that my rule of thumb with Baby Gap is that if I see something I want, it WILL go on sale, so no need to buy it before then. Unless it's something really cute - like the stuff with the animal hoodies usually goes FAST in the small sizes, but I feel like they email me a 20%-25% off coupon all the time, so I'll just use that. But for her pants and things, I think we got most of those on sale for like $8 each plus we got extra 30% off sale. I am expecting them to have a big Labor Day sale this weekend!!!

@hilsy85: Your LO arrives in November? I'd get more short sleeved onesies than long ones to put under sleepers. We only used short sleeved onesies the first year.

@jholler25: as far as shrinking goes, I did notice some Carters stuff shrunk strangely...we had a pair of cotton pants where one leg became shorter than the other! For sleepers, though, I didn't think they shrunk any more than other brands (we used a mix of Carters, MeToo and Janie and JackI(how could I forget that, lol)).

I'm a lazy mom, or as I like to call it low maintenance mom. I wear basics myself and don't put a lot of effort in to being "fashionable" and I have a boy. He was in sleepers a LOT in the beginning. After 2-3 months we didn't go out in them, but they were so easy because they didn't go over his head. We never put onesies under them, but would have if it was colder. (He was born in March.)

I bought/buy 2-3 really cute outfits that I love for special outings, but other than that I spend as little money possible on the basics. He spends his time getting dirty (early on, drool and poop, now food, milk and literal dirt while playing outside) so I don't spend money on his clothes. I looked for cute things, but for the majority of his clothes, cost mattered more than fashion. He's at daycare or home most of the time, so he doesn't need to be super fashionable.

@looch: Plus my Carter's stuff shrunk a lot! Did you find that? I bought a few NB things from Carter's and after washing them, they look sooooo tiny....I haven't washed everything yet, but I'm scared that everything is just going to shrink! The Baby Gap stuff that I've washed so far seemed fine when it came out, which made me even more on Team Baby Gap! I totally agree with you on the 5 Carters vs 1 BG! Plus BG really does have great sales, and they constantly email me coupons, so I never pay full price for anything.

@hilsy85: depends. I think since your baby will be here in the Fall during the first few weeks you will probably want a short sleeved onesie and a footed sleeper. And the weather will only be cooler so you will probably continue to do so. It doesn't have to be white onesies. I would just put plain onesies underneath her sleepers.
And yup after the first few weeks she lives in onesies and leggings. That's pretty much what she wears for daycare as well.

No Gap for this mama...too expensive even when on sale with a coupon for me. The only Gap item she has is gifted.

@Coco Bee: why do you take your lo's temperature daily? I've never taken M's!

We put her in sleepers for sleep time and onesies or outfits for daytime. If it's cold, I put her in a sleeper during the day.

Friends of ours dressed their twins in sleepers for their first year due to ease. I like the ones that go down one leg with the zipper or buttons. Then you don't need to do double the work during diaper changes.

We probably have 10 sleepers that we rotate through. We have tons of outfits but they were either gifted to us or we bought them used.

I just saw the posts on BabyGap and I have to agree. They're great. They're a lot more expensive than Carter's, though.

@jholler25: I agree! I'd rather have 1 outfit from babyGap over 5 from Carters. I didn't realize what nice stuff babyGap had until my son was 6 months old...talk about missing out!

@looch: Baby Gap is the bomb! It's so awesome that I actually just said "the bomb!" I love all their sets and mix and match stuff, and the quality and softness is so much better than the stuff I have from Carter's!

I dressed LO in the sleep gowns at night to make night diaper changes really simple. I always had her in dressed with bloomers during the day (she was a May baby). She is now in zip up sleepers, and we have 4 of them, which is plenty. Now we have 8 daycare outfits I (pants, socks, and a onesie/dress). We also have 3-4 weekend outfits. I take a lot of picutres, and didnt' want LO in the same outfits for every single picture.

I will probably go by the same guidelines when it comes time to buy 3-6m clothes, which is any time now. :)

Have you all checked out the selection of clothing at babyGap? They have sets, with these super soft jackets. I liked them because they had no hood, so if my son fell asleep, I didn't have to take it off when I transfered him to his crib. I had these in all sizes from 6 months on.

@skibobrown: yup we have one or two of those...might get a few more I guess!

@jholler25: That's a good idea...to do soft sweatpants/soft simple onesies as "outfits" for 0-3. It's a bit more dressed than a sleeper but still easy and comfy for baby. And goodness that last little jacket is adorbs!
