I think everyone has different social requirements to be happy/content. I have friends who need near constant interaction, but I am someone who is fine with just 1-3 a week haha. The winter was really tough though because my LO was too young for all the activities that went on when she wasn't napping or asleep and we only have one car that my husband took to work. So I was stuck home all week with an infant! I definitely got stir crazy but not as much as most others would be, I'm sure haha. Now, my husband works from home 2 days a week so I have the car then and can get out, and I will drive him to work most Mondays to take my daughter to a library toddler activity, so it is usually one Library activity, one or two park days, and maybe one other social engagement with family/friends each week and that is plenty for me.

Between cold/flu season, exhaustion and nap schedules, I didn't leave the house much for the first six months. But after that I joined our local Y, which had free childcare and gave me some outside interaction. Last winter was still pretty rough, but we started swim lessons, music class and story time at the library. I now structure our week to have an activity most mornings, or an errand day. That way we aren't stuck in the house the whole time! As DD has gotten older, she clearly wants to be out and about most days, so I've had to get creative to keep us moving. My homebody nature would love to stay home, but she is all extrovert

I have to so something every day with our son (2.5) or else I go crazy! If even it is to the park and chat with random people. I've always been this way though even when I was on maternity leave I tried to plan an outing a day. A lot of times it was a visitor coming to the house or lunch with a friend or family member and that was plenty in the first 3 months!

The first 6 months with my kiddo, I was too exhausted to be very social. I am pretty introverted, but I do need daily human interaction not to get depressed.

I realized how much better I felt when I interacted with my husband's co-workers when we visited him at work, and started making a point to get out of the house at least once a day. I knew I'd never get errands done like I used to prior to having kids, so spreading out errands throughout the week and accomplishing one or two a day was a good balance. Also even though he was too small to appreciate it, we got annual passes for the zoo, aquarium, and butterfly garden. Going to one or two a week got me out of the house and kept me from spending too much money shopping ;)

I took 4 months of maternity leave and started working part-time because I needed that adult interaction to stay happy. Even if it was simple tasks like editing and filing, I felt much more recharged afterwards. Working part-time is the right balance for me personally, I appreciate the time I spend in both worlds that much more.

My dd is 5 mo and I really only see friends every few weeks. I also get a visit from my parents every 2nd or 3rd week. But it isn't unusual to go a full work week and not see anyone other than my husband (or random strangers while I'm running errands).

But I'm a hermit by nature (and I make use of chatting with friends via FB, HB, and text)so it doesn't really bug me. I could get out more if I wanted to I'm sure.

Does hanging out with family count as social interaction?

Because if that's the case, then we have some sort of interaction (family, friends, playdates, classes, church) 7 days a week!

HOWEVER, I have a 10-month old and a 2.5-year old. We were not out that much when they were younger. My DD2 is a November baby and there was so much sickness going around when she was a newbie.... we were definitely homebodies.

Thanks everyone! It sounds like the beginning is kind of a get through it stage and then as we find our rhythm it will get easier.

Maybe I will make and freeze a ton of cookie dough and just bribe people to come over frequently!

This is why I personally am very resistant to moving to the suburbs. I need to see people every day and sometimes, especially in the early days, the only interactions I had were with a grocery store clerk or gardener. Just going for a walk outside was enough though. As they have gotten older I like to have our week a little more planned out. I find that having things scheduled helps us leave the house more efficiently and have something to look forward to.

I started going out with LO to play dates/mum groups etc. when she was around 4 weeks old. It was easy to get out and about with her until her nap schedule became more defined around 5/6 months. Then we hardly did ANYTHING until she was 10 months and dropped to one nap. I'm introverted too but I found that time pretty frustrating :( Now it's super easy to get out again and we usually have an interaction 3 out of the 5 week days. Though lately with birthday parties etc. it feels like it's pretty much every day!

I had a lot of anxiety that first winter and I couldn't get the nap schedule to a place where I could leave the house for more than an hour at a time, so I didn't really make a lot of plans until my son was about 4 months old. Then, I'd do one "big" thing a week, I couldn't handle more than that and I am normally a very social person.

I was alone almost every day when I had Chloe. I almost never left the house because I had no where to go. That, combined with the early night time - it was dark by 5pm - made for a very long and lonely winter.

It got easier once she started school and I made local mom friends. When she was two, I would grab coffee with friends maybe once a week & we started doing regular play dates.

Now I have a newborn. Chloe will be three next week, and she's in school 3x/wk. I see my mom friends at school & we usually grab coffee or dinner every now and again. Today I ran errands and had coffee with three friends, and we made plans to get drinks soon.

It gets better and easier!

We have class Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and a standing playdate on Friday afternoons. We also often get together Tuesday afternoons with other babies. So those days I always see friends and their babies. Mondays and Wednesdays, we always techincally have interactions at the park with other parents, but I don't always see people I know, so it's not the same.

That was hard in the beginning, but it gets way easier once LO can talk and being with him is social in and of itself! Just getting out of the ohsue is really helpful in the beginning, even if you're walking by yourself. And often a cute newborn will help strike up a conversation with random people :)

I am going stir crazy at the end of my pregnancy and am starting to feel kind of lonely and worried about this winter. I am done working and will be staying home with our lo.

How many times a week do you get together with other people? What seems to be your ideal? How do I not go crazy with a newborn?

I am a pretty introverted person but I realized that this week I have hung out with a friend for at least an hour every day this week and somehow I still feel isolated.

Any ideas? I keep thinking about starting a play group or something but by the time I have this baby and recover it will be the holidays and waiting until the new year sounds like an eternity! Also, if I buy any more random stuff at Target my husband might take to hiding my wallet before he leaves in the morning so shopping is probably not the best plan  .
