I'm not exactly sure, so maybe other posters will weigh in, but I think you can safely start using the umbrella strollers when your baby can sit up well (around 6 months or so). The Cruz is out; we just saw it the other day while we were out shopping. I, of course, drooled over it, but for what we need I still would have gone with the Vista. The Cruz reminded me of both the Bugaboo Bee and the Baby Jogger City Mini -- lighter overall, smaller wheels and easy fold, but without the flimsier frame that many umbrellas seem to have. I would have considered a Cruz if I lived somewhere where I was doing a lot of walking indoors or on smooth sidewalks. But I also would have considered the Cruz in addition to, rather than in place of, an umbrella stroller. I think the Cruz is still too heavy and too expensive to be used on trips.

After five months with a snap-and-go/car seat, I now have and am having a torrid love affair with the UppaBaby Vista. I'm convinced the Vista is one of the best strollers on the market. We live in the city and take our Vista everywhere. It steers easily, folds up quickly, has wheels that will go up and down stairs (we have four at the entrance to our building), and includes a basket that will readily take the place of a cart for me at Target! Because I'm so devoted to UppaBaby, we just bought the G-Luxe (also fabulous!) for an umbrella stroller to take on some upcoming trips. We just don't want to risk having the Vista damaged or stolen.

@katedel - thanks for the reco! I'll definitely check out the Chicco liteway since you mentioned it might be what I was looking for. (crossing fingers!)

@livsmama - i have several friends who also have the vista and love it and have become uppababy fans....so i'll also check out the g-luxe since it reclines, which is a necessity since we're out and about a lot during his naptimes.

UppaBaby is local for us (and RJ and Rob Sr. are featured on the cover of their catalog! Totally random...) so we have a Vista and we absolutely love it. That being said, we never take it on public transportation and we haven't done any air travel yet. If/when we ever have to, we'll get a G-Luxe or G-Lite from the factory. They sell refurbished and seconds at huge discounts (and they have great customer service so you don't even have to worry about anything going wrong... they fix or replace it immediately!)

Oh... we did start out with a snap n go and then eventually got the carseat adapter for the Vista. We did this so we could do research and choose a stroller after we knew what we wanted. But now that we know, we can rid of our snap n go since the Vista works for us (and will work great as a double stroller as well).

@JBHOPS, we bought the Peg Perego Vela with Primo Viaggio Car Seat and I think this will be the only stroller we'll need til she's too big for one. I actually borrowed a friend's umbrella stroller for a trip and had wished that I brought the Vela instead.

What I love about it: one-hand open and close, stands up when closed, large canopy shade, reclines to almost flat and super duper light (10 lbs?). The car seat also clicks in easily (no adapter needed) and sizewise, it's comparable if not smaller than the Maclaren when open. The only cons are that while it rides really smooth on regular sidewalks, the smallish wheels don't do too well on rough terrain. The restraining strap design is a toss-up - it isn't permanently secured to the back of the seat - at first I hated it but now I kinda like it cause it gives my LO more range of movement.

It's not perfect but seriously, that one-handed open/close is so easy, it more than makes up for the cons.

I have the 2010 version and it looks like they already made improvements to it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFHsBeUZqOk - not sure why she's using two hands when you only need one hand and one motion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY7IliABaPE

......although now it's heavier (15.8lbs) but that toy loop is pretty cool (might have to jimmy-rig one on mine ;)

@Annab53 - we love our vista so much that we wanted to stick with the brand if we could. We wanted an umbrella stroller that was light, portable, and reclines, and the G-Luxe came up. We tested it out with a few others and loved it. Plus it stands when it's folded. Ideal for city living. It's a little pricier, but IMO uppababy is worth it. The G-Lite is similar, but doesnt recline, so that didn't work for us

I agree with @Looch, it really depends on your lifestyle. We live in a city with not-so-great sidewalks, we take public transportation and have a smaller car for the city driving, do a lot of international travel, and I'm usually alone with my son.

The only stroller that we bought was the Maclaren XLR - it's a little heavy when lugging it up and down a street car but overall it's worked for us from birth and beyond and is well-constructed. I've checked it as baggage, with and without a stroller bag, and it's still in good shape. I can use it with Baby #2, when we get there.

Although I should add, when going through airports what we do is that I wear my son in the baby carrier and we put our carry-on bags on the stroller - makes a great luggage trolley. (Our bags weigh more than our son!)

@livsmama - I'm looking for a lightweight umbrella stroller than reclines and isn't too expensive (under $100?). We use our Bee every day and totally love it because it's small, easy to fold/unfold and is easy to steer. But I think I want something lighter, smaller and less expensive (so that I don't have to worry about leaving it unattended). What made you decide to go with the G-Luxe? I saw it at a store recently and loved it but haven't done my research so I passed on it. Thanks!

@momentspasslow - we bought the car seat adapter for our UBV but unfortunately Liv DESPISES being in the car seat. She hates it with a burning passion in or out of the car. So we have yet to use it.

@Annabee53- do you want a system or an umbrella for traveling? We're going with the Uppababy G-Luxe for our travel stroller. It weighs 11lbs I think. It doesn't fully recline but it comes close.

I have a Britax B-Ready, which I LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! It is similar to the Uppa, but a lower price point. I got mine with the Chaperone car seat that clips directly onto the stroller. It is so easy to use. When I have a second baby I can put the older baby in the toddler seat and get a infant adapter that clips the infant seat to the bottom or put the older baby on the bottom. It is really cool!

We just got our FOURTH stroller in the last two years, but this one was out of necessity. At first we were gifted a Graco travel system, but I wish I had done more research on what I wanted in a stroller. I used to work at Walt Disney World and the Graco strollers were what I saw every person toting their kids around in, so I didn't really know any differently. It lasted about 9 months, but took up too much space in my car trunk, and just didn't steer very well while pushing a baby and walking two dogs.

After a ton of research and deciding on a budget, we bought a Baby Jogger City Mini brand new, off of craigslist. I have never once regretted that purchase, in fact, it was the BEST baby purchase we've ever made! Not only is the stroller lightweight and super duper easy to fold, it takes up a tiny amount of space in a trunk. The best feature is probably it's maneuverability; I can literally steer it with two fingers while my 25 lb. son sits in it. It has a wide canopy, and you can buy the accessories that you want for it (like a parent tray/cupholders, car seat adaptor). The storage basket is quite tiny and hard to access, but it hasn't been that big of an issue for us.

We also bought a cheapo umbrella stroller to get thru the airport when we travel. I didn't want my expensive City Mini to be damaged by the airlines, and needed something easy to lift onto the security xrays by myself. I hate the thing, cause it's so low and doesn't steer well, but for $10 it gets the job done.

We just bought our second Baby Jogger stroller, but only because we need a double since our second son is due in a few weeks. Indiana still needs to be strapped into a stroller when we go out, especially when he has to take a nap in the afternoon. We bought the City Select stroller, which can convert from a single to a double in-line. It has a large storage basket, and we purchased the car seat adaptor for our Graco car seat. It is easy to fold, lightweight for a double stroller, and easy to steer. Although we haven't used it yet, I'm confident that we made the right decision with this choice as our double stroller.

I had, still have and will always have stroller envy. This causes major issues with selecting one. If I had to do it all over again, there are so many things I would consider, here are just a few:

1. Do you drive or rely on public transportation for the majority of your travelling?
2. Where will you store the stroller?
3. Are you mostly alone with baby or do you have SO to help you with the stroller?
4. Do you have any travel plans within the first year of baby's life?
5. Do you plan to buy an infant car seat (if so, pick this out first)?
6. What's your budget?
7. Can you test drive the models, or must you rely on a video posted on line?
8. How important are "components" to you? These include bassinets, seats, telescoping handles, having baby face you vs. facing out, etc.

I could write an entire guide about this!

@vcha88 - I have the Bee+ (2010 model). Yeah, I totally know what you're saying about the older models. My friends who have the regular bee (not the plus) didn't really like it because of the reasons you stated. But they thankfully fixed it for the newer models. I agree with you. Love the way it steers. :) Plus my hubs thinks it looks "cool". He likes the white "rims" (*rolling eyes*)

I'm actually looking for a SUPER lightweight stroller for traveling (like going to Disneyland, etc). Ideally it would fully recline too. Do you have any recos? Thanks!

We have the City Mini and LOVE it. We got the infant car seat adapter ($40) and plan to use it exclusively. We live in the suburbs so I drive everywhere that I need to bring the stroller. I also walk a lot with it in the neighborhood and plan to jog with it eventually. (My little guy is only 6 weeks!) It is not considered a jogging stroller but I don't really run fast, so I'm okay with it. I think it will last us a very long time. It is SO amazingly easy to fold and unfold. The one minor issue I've seen so far is that the basket underneath doesn't hold a ton - but I also don't really see the need for a ton of storage, I feel like it would just end up being filled with junk anyway!
