B is four and has been taking lessons since six months. Right now he can swim with a life jacket, but that’s a fairly recent development. I found that he made huge leaps when we went on vacation and he was in the water all the time.

Agree with @looch: about concentrated lessons. My then 5yo took her first lessons last summer - she was afraid before then and I didn’t push it - she quickly caught up with kids who had done other summers so I do think age matters. They were 30m for 4 days/wk for 2 weeks. I wish we had done 3 weeks really! I still wouldn’t let her swim without me watching her but it made a huge difference. I know that schedule can be hard to manage though

@looch: we aren't working towards a specific goal. I will definitely ask about all options but i honestly think we could go more than once or twice a week with everthing else we have on our schedule

@Mrsbells: What about looking for classes that meet every day for a period of a few weeks? You might get faster results that way, like if you need to do it in anticipation of a vacation, camp, house with pool, etc.

Once a week is tough, it takes a long time that way, especially if you are beginning from no water skills at all.

Thanks that's helpful so i will lean towards the group classes then since they are more affordable for a long run approach

It took DS about a year, with weekly lessons in the summer (not professional lessons, just us showing him what to do). He actually learned in like two days, but not until it clicked in his mind that water will hold him up...

Assuming she’s only going 1/week, it will take a more than a few lessons. My daughter started right when she turned 3 and it took her a full year of weekly 30 min lessons to swim independently. That was exactly what her swim school told me to expect. That said, starting at 5 may be quicker because kids are more developed physically?

Eta - at 4, she can swim a short distance by herself, float on her back and jump in the pool and make it back the wall. She’s not nearly ready to play and jump in a pool by herself with no swimmies.

If your child took lessons how long before they could swim independently. DD is 5 and we are snout to sing her up. I can't decide if I should pay more for a few private lessons or let her join a small class. She learns well with others.
