@Kemma: Well, I basically do feed him right before bed. I feed him at 6:00 and he sometimes nurses for up to an hour (I'm assuming because he loves cuddling Mama! :P), so by the time that's done, we do a diaper change, bath or wipe-down, new pjs, book, and then bed! I don't really want to nurse him again because I don't want him to get into the habit of nursing to sleep.

@MamaMoose: I suspect 5 won't work for mine either. It's just a pipe dream!

I have a six month old who still eats 6 or 7 times a day. 5 would never work for her.

I think that LLL still recommends between eight and ten feeds at around three months so you could potentially have a drop in supply if you do drop one feed.

Have you tried nursing him again right before his bedtime rather than at 2100?

@edelweiss: 5 times a day is great! That's what I want! :)

@mrskc: Oh yeah, that's not a lot! No wonder you have to feed him so much at night! But I agree about the pumping stress! It definitely sucks having to pump 15oz (sometimes more) every day. It's stressful and I can barely do it!

@Adira: 15 oz is great. I'm gone over 10 hours and he has 6-8 ounces. Only upside is it makes pumping less stressful. I only pump twice at work sometimes even just once.

during maternity leave, we worked on sleep training and fell into a 4-hour feeding schedule during the day, and 1 night feeding. i know that's not common and i was pretty anxious about it, especially when we went to daycare and saw babies much older than him on 2-3 hour eating schedules. eventually, around 4 months, we switched to a 3-hour eating schedule at the daycare's request. i think that because he wasn't getting the kinds of naps at daycare that he was getting at home, he had more opportunity to be cranky and realize when his hunger was setting in. so now he eats 5 times a day.

@mrskc: I hope so too! Who knows though! I've been back at work for a couple weeks now and Xander seems to take his bottles like a champ (he drinks ~15oz at daycare), so I'm hoping that he'll continue to get enough during the day that he's not up a lot at night! I guess I'll find out soon enough though!

@Adira: I hope it doesn't hit you like it did us. A is 8 months now. But I've refused to do any sleep training at this point so I suppose maybe his sleep would be better if I had sleep trained. Ever since I went back to work, he doesn't drink much from a bottle so he nurses more at night to make up the calories. It's working for us for now.

@mrskc: Well, Xander's only 3 months, so I have no idea what the 4-month sleep regression will bring us! Maybe I shouldn't rock the boat just yet, since what we're doing now is working for us! How old is your son?

@Adira: BTW your baby's sleep is my dream. haha DS slept really well from 2-4 months but now he wakes up 3-4 times a night. ugh! I wish I could just feed him at 9 and he'd sleep all the way until 5 am.

@hilsy85: So true! I guess I'll try it and just see what happens!

@mrskc: Oh yes, he passes right out after his 9:00 p.m. feed. Heck, I think he's sleeping during it sometimes! He definitely starts off awake, but after a few minutes, he seems to be sleep eating. If I could do a real dream feed, that would be what I would do! But when he's dead-asleep, I can't force my boob into his mouth for the life of me, so I have to wake him up to do it!

@hilsy85: Sounds like I'm pretty lucky to be at six at the moment! I'm going to try this weekend to not wake him at 9:00 and see what happens, but if he just wakes up in the middle of the night to eat, I'm going to go back to feeding him at 9:00!

My LO was nursing about 6x a day at that point...it went up to 7-8 around 4 months, and now at 8 months, it's back to 6-7. I think you can give it a try, but as others have said, he'll probably need to make it up at another time, or will need to have more milk during his current feeding times, which his tummy might just not be able to do yet!

DS was still nursing 8+ times a day at 3 months. Every 2 hours during the day and I think once at night at that age. You can always try and see what happens, but he will probably need to make up that feeding at some point during the day or night.

@Pumpkinspice: haha, yes, I remember! I actually was thinking about you this morning because Xander decided to wake up at 4:58 (I've been waking him at 5:00 all week), so I had to laugh that I didn't actually wake him this time, though my waking him all week maybe messed him up!

My fear with dropping the 9:00 p.m. feeding is that he'll wake up at 2:00 a.m. and won't make it until 5:00 anymore. He might prefer this, but it will totally suck for me, since I will STILL have to get up at 5:00 a.m.!

Anna is not quite 3 months but she eats roughly every 3 to 4 hours during the day and has her last bottle around 8:30 or so and then sleeps until 5am (ish) so some days she gets 6 and some days she gets 5 depending on if she goes 4 hours in between.
I mentioned on one of your previous threads that I don't think waking a baby to eat is necessary and I really don't think it's needed two hours after he goes to sleep but again that's just my opinion. You just want to do what works best for you.

So I'm thinking about dropping a feeding, but I'm not sure if it's realistic or not. Currently Xander gets fed six times a day, three at home and three at daycare. When he gets home from daycare, I feed him at 6:00 p.m., he goes to bed by 7:30, and then I wake him at 9:00 to feed him again. Then he sleeps through the night *crosses fingers* and I feed him again at 5:00 a.m. I've been thinking about dropping the 9:00 p.m. wake-up-to-eat feeding, but I'm wondering if only eating 5 times a day will be enough for a 3 month old.

How many times a day does (or did) your 3 month old eat?
