Thanks for weighing in, everyone! Her (lack of) weight gain has always been a concern for me, and I'm so tired of everyone telling me what a tiny baby she is. It's like, okaaaay, I know she's small. Grr. Anyways. I know as long as she's developing on track and meeting milestones, I shouldn't worry too much :) Thanks again!

That doesn't seem like a huge percentile drop to me. My baby is long and lean too, and she never had any baby chub. She's bounced around from the 15th to the 5th percentile weight wise, but her doctor has never been terribly concerned. I'd not worry too much, if I were you. Especially if you're short or skinny or otherwise small.

If your baby is decreasing nursing, they're probably full on solids. Usually, breastmilk has more calories than solid foods, so if you're really intent on fattening her up, more breastfeeding might be in order. But she may just want to be a skinny little girl! My toddler is just the tiniest little thing, and she's totally healthy and normal.

I have a few things to add. Don't worry too much you are doing great!

Make sure your doctor is using a breastfeeding. Here the the WHO chart http://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts/data/who/grchrt_girls_24lw_9210.pdf which shows me that she is well above 50%. Breastfed babies tend to gain less weight as they get older.

2) My son is still eating 5 times a day (or more at night) at 18 months old. I don't think that is a bad thing. We feed before eating. For the last 6 months he has gained 1 pound each month (so he went from 14 pounds to 20 pounds). Is she on whole milk? My son isn't so we do not restrict breastmilk. He drinks 8 oz of special milk when he isn't with me. We let him walk around with food in a bowl constantly. Lots of dried fruit and puffs. He always had food. We did BLW so he was already on solid foods.

If you look I have some posts asking how often babies were fed too and the number was different for everyone. If you feel that everything is okay (on track developmentally and healthy) I wouldn't worry about it. Some babies are just peanuts.

DS is just shy of 8 months and he eats 2-3 solid meals and 4-5 day feedings and 1-2 night feedings.

I hope she gains weight!! She is similar weight to my son; at his 6 mos appt he was 15 lbs and I don't think he's gained a full lb in 2 months.

@MungBean: DD was in the 20-30% for weight up to her 3 month visit, dropped to 15% at her 4 month visit then down again to 10% by ht 6 month visit. I, of course, freaked but the ped said she wasn't concerned because LO was growing well lengthwise (77%) and head circumference. It sounds like your LO is eating well and growing on track so I wouldn't worry too much. =)

@sandy: Sammyfab: Thanks for your response! So it sounds like what L is doing (nursing 4-5 times and eating solids 3 times daily) is typical at this age.

@littleveesmommy: L is very long and lean, too. She is meeting her milestones and is developing right on track so I wasn't too worried, but I noticed over the past month or so that she was eating less & losing baby fat so I took her in for a weight check. She was never a chubby baby (always hovering around 20 - 30th percentile), but this time she dropped to 10-15th percentile which is why the ped got a little worried :(

DD is 8.5 months old and currently nursing 6 times a day along with 3 solids meals. She's also a little peanut with last official weigh in at 6 months of 13lb 2oz. I tried weighing her on our scale at home (digital scale, hop on holding her then subtract my weight) and I think she's at 15lb 10oz. I'm also still nursing before solids and let her decide how much solids she wants. I stop when she doesn't want anymore, which is usually 3 oz breakfast, 3-4 oz lunch, and 3 oz dinner. I've tried increasing her meals but she doesn't seem to want more. My ped didn't seem concerned with her weight so far but I will ask again at her 9 month well visit! I wasn't planning on doing solids first until after her 9 month appt depending on what ped recommends for her.

Is your LO meeting milestones? DD is a peanut and friends ask about her size out of concern (she's long and lean) but she has met her milestones so I wasn't too concerned since ped wasn't.

My LO is 7.5 months (close to 8!) and he nurses 3-4 times a day and gets a bottle of breastmilk at bedtime (no nightfeed). He gets solids 3x a day and eats 3-5oz of solids. He's a big boy though at almost 20 lbs!

I've read that at around 9 months is when to start offering solids before nursing/formula so that's what we will be doing. :)

At 8 months my LO was nursing 4-5 times a day and eating solids 3 times a day (went from eating 2 big meals to 3 smaller meals - she just ate a little less each meal when I started offering solids more frequently)

We just had a weight check today and L is still a tiny peanut, weighing in at 15.5 LBS at just a few days shy of 8 months. Our ped wants us to increase solid feedings to three times a day (we're currently doing twice daily) and introduce meats and add olive oil to her food to try to facilitate some weight gain. He also suggested feeding her solids BEFORE nursing (this whole time, I've been nursing her first, and then doing solids).

It's almost 4PM here and so far, she's only nursed 3 times, but she's eaten quite a bit of solids (3 oz of pureed chicken, sweet rice, & carrots in the AM, and 4 oz fruit puree + 2 TB of oatmeal in the PM).

I'm worried because this probably means she'll only nurse about 5 times total today, when she usually nurses 6-7 times daily. Is this normal for babies to reduce nursings around this time? How many times does your 8 month old nurse? Gah, I feel so stressed!
