Like the others we did 1x/day at 6 mos, 2x at 7, and 3x around 8.5. We did purees for the first month but switched to finger/table foods at 7 months, to try out more of a baby-led weaning approach, which we have LOVED. He did start nursing a bit less with more solids, but not until about 8.5-9 months.

My LO loves her solids, we offer them a few times a day (she's just about 6 months)-in the morning and then again in the afternoon/evening. I started with just once per day and learned that it really wasn't enough for her. There are definitely times when she is only interested in her bottle though. She has also been waking up more often in the middle of the night looking for a few ounces and then goes right back to sleep, so I think we are in a growth spurt.

Similar to Pelikila, we went with 1x/day at 6mo. He polished off those containers without a problem most days! At 7mo we moved to 2x/day and moved up to the 3.5-4oz containers. We had a few weeks where he wouldn't eat ANYTHING at all, but I think that was a combination of teeth and being sick. We have started offering 'Mum-Mums' randomly, but not regularly to get him used to holding his own food, etc. The Puffs were too small/sticky but the Mum-Mums are big enough and 'melt' in their mouth. Our pediatrician recommended to move to 3x/day at about 9mo.

Unfortunately he is pretty anti-veggies right now, so that is a whole other boat to work with.

@Rubies: Not sure. We're going back to a veggie today, though. I'll see if it makes any difference!

I have no experience yet with solids so I'm just putting this out there. If you feed bananas at night, do you think the sugars in it is what is waking your LO up at night? My LO is 5 months so will be starting solids next month so this is a great thread for me!

One random thought ... I've been feeding him solids in the late afternoon. I wonder if he's still full from them and doesn't take in as much when I nurse him before bed a couple hours later?

@pelikila: His bottom teeth are in now, so I think that we're over that hump (for now). My money is just on growth spurt. We have a checkup soon ... I'll probably stick with once a day right now and ask her about it.

Today I'm going to try another veggie and see what happens. Maybe peas. He was all over bananas from Day 1, but carrots took a few days for him to polish off the whole container.

At 6 months I was only offering one serving of solids per day. Around 7 months I upped it to two meals of solids per day plus teething biscuits and mum mums as snacks. At 9 months I upped it to 3 meals of solids per day (on the advice of my pedi) plus snacks like puffs, cheerios, etc. I also started offering some table foods like a muffin for breakfast, sweet potato fries, green beans, etc (non pureed, just cut up small). My son still drinks the same amount of formula (was EBF until 8 months, supplemented for one month and then entirely formula at 9 months) and we offer him a sippy of water throughout the day to keep up his fluids.

I'd suggest offering 2 meals of solids a day and see if that seems to satisfy him. My son started getting teeth at 6.5-7 months so good sleep became few and far between during teething bouts. Perhaps that is the culprit of such frequent night wakings.

My LO is 8 months old and has solids 3 times a day. Morning is cereal ( just normal kind, not baby), middle of the day is usually a piece of toast and some veggies ( sweet potato, carrot etc) and we are introducing meat and end of the day is usually fruit, so a container of baby food. At each meal LO also has milk and then has one additional milk feed before bed. Since increasing solids one feed a day has been dropped, although sometimes LO will have a rusk or snack between meals. LO doesn't wake at night at all.
I increased the amount of solids gradually, so spent a week or two at each level ( once a day, twice a day etc). I didn't want to overload LO's digestive system too much! LO shows no signs of wanting to ditch the milk and the introduction of solids did not interfere with my milk supply at all.

@Mrs. Yoyo: So my LO woke up every 2 hours last night to eat too. I thought my life had rewinded (rewound?) back 8 months. I think she's going through a growth spurt too because she ate more solids today than she ever has. The first year of life is so much fun :)

@chopsuey119: yeah, I know he's getting what he needs from the milk ... It's just that the feeding more often has thrown me for a loop! He just woke up only two hours after being put to bed (after nursing) wanting to eat again ... And that's after eating every 2.5 hrs all day plus the whole thing of bananas!

WOW! Your LO is such a great eater. My 9 month old only takes a few bites to an ounce of solids depending on her mood. -.-
I give her solids 3x a day. She takes mostly breastmilk though.
I read that breastmilk has all the nutrients a baby needs for his/her first year so I'm not too concerned.
Your LO might be going through a growth spurt?

Baby Y is 6 months, and is on Day 8 or 9 of solids. He has been EBF previously. The past five days he has polished off an entire 2.5-oz. container of baby food. I am making sure he nurses not too long before eating to protect my supply and make sure breastmilk is still No. 1. Should I be offering him solids more than once a day? I guess I just want to make sure he doesn't get any funny ideas about weaning.

For the record, he has also been waking up more at night to nurse -- 2x, sometimes even 3x! -- and nursing more often during the day, though for short periods (not even 10 mins.) Maybe a growth spurt???? Will another round of solids help??? Ugh.
