I have better luck sitting next to the crib and reading so that I can soothe her before she gets all worked up and I hear her too late. But I really struggle with this. I can only get her to nap for 30 min unless she's in a swing. I just keep picking her up, calming her, and putting her back down

Yesterday I tried without success and let him sleep on me. This morning for his first nap after he nursed he was sleepy, I put him in a sleep sack and gave a quick cuddle, put him down and he went straight to sleep. First time and it is great to have two arms to myself in the daytime!

So just keep trying and eventually it is going to work. I'm not going to assume he will do this for every nap now, but once is great and he has to start somewhere.

@Silva: I think it depends on your baby. My little guy would get overtired if he fell asleep and woke up again more than twice- and then he wouldn't fall back asleep for hours and be hysterical. So I usually tried two or three times and then let him nap on me. On good days I'd try for more than one crib nap some days I didn't even try. We focused on maximizing sleep at that age! He sleeps in his crib for all naps now happily and has since four and a half months.

Wow! You ladies are on the ball! I haven't been able to get K to nap independently in the crib ever! I asked a question about it last week. The best I can do with napping at home is to get her drowsy enough to the fall asleep in the swing. She's only napped in her crib a handful of times. Would love to figure out how too. I've tried many times but she will end up crying and twisting her body - she gets so upset.

@Silva: I started about 2 weeks ago so 8 weeks. Yep put her down drowsy and swaddled. The first time I rubbed her chest and spoke softly and gave her a paci. Every time she fussed I gave her back her paci and rubbed her chest a bit until she settled again. I didn't pick her up (I would of if she cried but she never got to that point). It did take a long time for her to fall asleep properly that first time but I just stuck with it. I think by staying in the room I could get to her before she woke fully. I must of settled her about 15 times in that hour. Sometimes she's not ready to sleep when I put her down and she does cry a bit so I usually get her back up for 10mins and start the process again, so that might help as well! These babies are hard work ;)

@AprilFool: so you just put her in drowsy, picked her up and soothed when she fussed? My LO seems so wide awake once she wakes up. Today she ended up getting over tired, and it took forever to Get her to sleep even in the carrier.
How old was your LO when you did this?

The first time I got H to nap in the crib I tried as many times as it took. Which was a lot! I took a book into her room and whenever she fussed I soothed. I tried not to let it get to crying since it was harder to soothe her at that point. I think I sat in there for over an hour for her to nap for 20 mins on her own. The first time is the hardest and each time after that needed less soothing.

In an earlier post I mentioned that I'm trying to help my 8 1/2 week old be able to nap independently. I'm fine with nursing her to sleep, but I'd like her to start taking at least one nap a day by herself.
My problem is that I never know how many times to try before I just put her in a carrier and wear her.

For example, today I started nursing her to sleep at 11:00 or so, when I knew she was getting tired and ready for her second nap. She was asleep by 11:15, I snuck out at 11:30, and she woke up 5 minutes later. SHe fussed for a bit and I left her alone but by 11:45 she was definitely crying. I tried patting her butt and giving her a pacifier but she wouldn't take it and kept crying, so I picked her up and soothed her. THen I tried nursing her sitting up, which is usually how we get ready for bed. She passed out quickly. I tried to transfer her to the crib and she woke up immediately.
Now its 12:30 and its been like 2 1/2 hours since she woke up from her morning nap. So I put her in the carrier. She is very tired and will probably fall asleep any minute.

How many times do I keep trying to get her to sleep alone before I put her in the pack to avoid getting overtired?
