When LO was younger and woke up early from a nap, the only way I could get her to go back down for a little longer was to bring her in bed and nurse her back to sleep, then we would just take a nap together. I could never get her to go back down in her crib when she was younger tho.

If she's overtired in the first place before her nap it might cause her to wake sooner, but regardless if she still gives me the tired cues I'll try and put her down again. It's not often she wakes from a nap in the house though. Sometimes she will only sleep for half an hour and if she seems awake enough I'll play with her a little and see if she either wants to feed soon or is tired enough to sleep again. FWIW if she wakes early it's mostly because she is uncomfortable, 9 times out of 10 because she's cold. If I put her in her basket I make sure the mattress is warm. It could be something like that?

The only way I can get LO to go back down from a nap is if I bring her into our bed and lay down next to her. Then she goes right back to sleep and I sneak out (but make a pillow barrier between her and the edges). I don't usually do this after the morning nap, but often I do for the afternoon one because it keeps me from going crazy!

I'm with @Smurfette and @Adira. If he's bright eyed bushy tailed when I pick him up, I let him stay awake. If he's still drowsy with eyes closed, but whining/crying, I'll put him back down.

I was NEVER able to successfully put LO down to sleep longer right after she wakes up (even if its a crappy 15-20 minute one), but my mom is able too. Grandmas must have secret powers.

@.twist.: Nope. She goes to bed no problem every night now, reguardless of how much nap time she had.
Yesterday she fought her naps, so napped 45 mins total all day at day care. Slept 15-20 mins on the way home. Was cranky pants for 30 mins and then I just put her to bed 30 mins early.

@Adira: I did this exactly. I would try to put her down again but if she's UP, I just try to put her down earlier the next time.

Same as @Smurfette, although I won't go get him immediately when he wakes up from a nap early. Sometimes he'll fall back asleep on his own, but if he starts wailing, then he's up for the time being! I'll just often put him down for his next nap earlier.

I never do. She just won't go back asleep for naps once she wakes up. I just try and put her down as soon as I see the next sleep cue, which is always sooner since she is still tired.

We are working on transitioning DD to her crib and naps have become impossible. She will only sleep in 20 min stretches of I'm lucky is unusual for her. I try putting her back down after she wakes up and it usually lasts for a couple hours with 5-20 min stretches each time. She just isn't getting enough sleep though.

How many times do you put LO back down if they keep waking up early from a nap?
