@NorthStar: I found a sale on Bosch, so I decided to go ahead and get one! I'm ridiculously excited. Clean dishes without having to scrub each one, woohoo!!!

@lilyofthewest: @AB810: @knittylady: You ladies make me feel so much better! I confess that some weeks I've run it 2x per day on at least one day--being around for lunch during the day makes a huge difference in the number of plates and such, I think. We often have friends and extended family eating here too, and things really add up.

***
Thank you, everyone!

Family of 4 and I'd say twice a day. Maybe more? We were without a dishwasher for about a month and a half (over the holidays - added ugh). It sure makes me appreciate it now!

3-4x a weeks. We try to only run it between 7pm and 7am when the energy costs are the lowest.

I'm presently running the dishwasher for its 3rd time today. Its because we let dishes stack up really badly over the weekend though. Generally, we run it 5-8x/week.

@honeybear: We have a Bosch and love it! We've had it for 3 years now and run about every 3 days. The thing is SO quiet and has run perfectly.

We also had one in our house before this and had no issues.

About every 2-3 days but we hand wash a lot of the kids plastic cups/bottles. Plus our nanny avoids the dishwasher like the plague (because she doesn't want to empty it) so she will hand wash every dish the boys use during the day.

You definitely didn't overuse it. We are running ours daily. It is original to the house (8 years old). The rinse aid dispenser was broken when we moved in a year and a half ago but otherwise the thing is running strong. It's a kenmore.

@T.H.O.U.: FWIW, Bosch, Whirlpool and Miele are the "most reliable" d/w brands per CR. (I did my homework before my last purchase too!) LG is next, which I call foul on. I'm willing to consider a Bosch. Maybe that's what I'll do come President's Day.

@honeybear: yea I have never been impressed with anything LG. We won't even consider that. But take that as a grain of salt because we have four other Samsung appliances. Washer dryer and fridge are all 7 years old.

For a dishwasher we were looking at kitchen aide but that's pretty mid line and I'm not sure it's worth the cost.

Our washing machine was just declared FUBAR, we got a $1000 gift card to Home Depot. It still runs, it just makes a squeaking noise when you run the whites cycle. It has been taken apart twice now, with various parts replaced. Labor is expensive, it's not worth paying someone to try and figure out the problem any more!

Our dishwasher gets run every other day during the week and once a day on the weekend.

@T.H.O.U.: So, we've had an LG and a Whirlpool Gold. Both broke for no reason and different repair guys pronounced them FUBAR and mentioned lousy manufacturing standards these days. (To be fair, the guy who came for the Whirlpool said 1) the wash motor dying is somewhat rare, and 2) people haven't seemed to have as many problems with that brand as with others.) I'm still trying to figure out which philosophy on appliance-buying I'm going to try next: spend as little as possible and plan to buy a new one more regularly or go for something like a Miele. I've spent way too much time reading reviews and other research, and my sense is that what you're getting by upgrading from the lower end of mid-range is not better quality, but more "extras" which I don't care about. The price tag on the Miele hurts, but the reason I'm even considering it is that I have one of their vacuums (after having had a bunch of other ones that were half the price) and it is by far the best household item I have ever owned. It has run perfectly--daily!--for over 7 years and I've never had any trouble with it. (To be fair, it does not have any plumbing running into it, but still, it has a motor and that motor has definitely helped to suck up glass shards, and it is still humming along.) I'm not sure what I'm going to do. All I want are clean dishes and a reliable machine. I don't care about extra settings. Even the exterior aesthetics of the thing are of little importance to me.

ETA: I will never buy an LG anything ever again. We had/have other appliances from them (they were what was in our house). Their customer service is atrocious.

We run ours once every week or two, but I know that we are on the SUPER low end. We've only had a functional dishwasher in the last two years, and I just haven't gotten in the habit of using it yet. Between things that I want to reuse quickly and things that I won't put in the dishwasher, most dishes get washed in the sink.

Maybe 1-2 times per week and we are a family of 5 but we have a baby so I handwash his spoons and bottles and my older child is the worst eater so barely uses any utensils. We do use a lot of paper plates and we hand wash pots and pans.

Thanks, everyone! This has been helpful. I'm still really miffed (and irritated at myself for being so bothered about not having a working dishwasher! Gah.), but at least it seems clear that I'm not abusing my machine by running it daily. The reason I started to wonder was my friend's comment and then I saw the Energy Guide tag on new machines, which is based on running 4x/week.

@Littlebit7: Our repair guy also mentioned shards of glass breaking motors! I'm not sure how that would happen, and I am fairly confident that's not what happened to ours. Nothing ever broke in our machine, and the motor housing looked pretty solid, so I'm not sure how a piece of something could have gotten in there from below. Between removing the old one and putting this one in, I cleaned the floor under there really well and in any event, there's a kickplate on the front that would keep any debris out. I vacuum the kitchen daily--there's just not a lot of opportunity for bits of stuff to go floating around.

But I wholeheartedly agree with your repairman that appliances are not as good as they used to be. My parents had the same kitchen suite for several decades! None of it was high-end, it was just made better than the stuff sold today. (Certainly also less energy efficient, BUT if I have to buy new appliances every year or two, I think the old energy hogs still win. Landfills aren't getting less full.)

@DesertDreams88: Oh, man. I feel for your friend! I washed dishes for two months while we waited for a sale to buy this one (GRRRR!), and I think I'll probably be doing the same until President's Day when at least I have a shot at a decent sale price.

Daily, we have a kitchen aid right now with a stainless interior. I have done some minor repairs to it my self the upper wash arm broke so I replaced it. Sometimes I run it more than once a day. I used glass baby bottles those I washed by hand.
