We did a few drive-bys (ours was empty when we bought it), but then we put in an offer at our first showing. It was in the perfect location for us and we just fell in love with it.

We were a little crazy and only looked at ours once. But the market was pretty hot over the summer and we were afraid we were going to lose it. Plus we absolutely fell in love with it. If you go again, take tons of pictures of everything, and measure as much as you can.

@jedeve: it was awful. We lost out on a few by just a couple thousand dollars. We bid $140k over ask for our house and beat out the #2 bidder by $1500. The market here is so crazy. It took three years to buy (partially because I'm picky) but mainly because it's so expensive.

@pui: I think DH would have bought this house without looking inside since I loved the inside so much and the outside meet all of his criteria for the yard and the look of the house. But there were some other things that were nagging at me (all related to the location, not the house) and that coupled with a few things that came up today...its a no go!

@Sparkler: I mentioned cutting the table down to DH and he vetoed that immediately! I know its totally weird to base a home on a piece of furniture, but the table is a very big deal to both of us. We spent months looking for it, and we bought an extra big one so we can all fit for big family dinners. The dinners (with my family, actually) are a huge deal to him. In fact, the first thing he said upon seeing the dining room was "will our table fit?" So I know any house we buy has to make that work!

Our house, which DH bought before we were married, he didn't even look inside at all before he bought it, but that was a very special case haha.

I would say at least once. More than that if necessary, which it might not be.

So, just to update...we have decided to hold off on the offer. A few things came up today that are making us think twice. (Not the size of the dining room though!) But thank you all for your input, since we are continuing our home search, I know this advice will definitely come in handy!

@2PeasinaPod: Oh no! Ours is usually on top of it (well, our home sale/purchase person is...our move coordinator is another story!) But today...I can't seem to get her on the phone! We have used relocation companies before (we moved for DH's job a lot!) and they were much more on top of it when we wanted to put in an offer!

@catlady: I hear what you are saying about delaying. We've done that before - and should have done that with our last house! We would have our offer in by now if we weren't working with a relo company. We have to have certain things approved by them and they aren't getting back to us! Maybe its a sign?

We saw ours twice. Once when we first started looking in the beginning of the summer. We didn't put an offer in because we just wanted to see what else was out there. It ended up being a blessing in disguise. It went under contract, that fell through, then a relocation company took over and dropped the price by $40K. We jumped on it, got into a bidding war and eventually won out. We paid $20,000 less than what we would have if we put in an offer in the beginning of the summer!

We saw ours once, and it was just the open house. We were buying in an extremely hot market though, and we'd gotten outbid twice already in the previous couple weeks. I would have liked to have seen it twice, I think.

Before that, there was a house in a different town (not a hot market) that we visited a couple times, and then drove by a couple more times...we joked we were stalking the house. But really, the fact that we kept delaying putting in an offer was indicative of the fact that deep down, we didn't want that house. We realized that later on, when we found houses we liked more and put in offers very quickly.

@rachiecakes: A floor plan would be awesome! Our last house was new construction so we had a floor plan and all kinds of info on it. We didn't want to go that route this time, but its weird not being able to just pull up a floor plan whenever I want!

I'm glad to hear you like the area! We are new here (obviously) but so far we are really liking it!

A house we almost put an offer on we went to see three times. But every time we would visit I just had more questions that would arise so we decided to keep looking. The house we bought we only went to see once though if it weren't for other circumstances we would've gone to see it twice. But we knew pretty quickly it was better for us in a lot of ways than the other houses we've been looking at. It was also in a neighborhood that was known for selling extremely quickly so that was part of the reason we got our offer in before seeing the house twice.

Just once.... We happened to be looking with my husbands parents and our realtor that day, so we were able to get their opinion on the spot. We were only 25 and had no real experience with home ownership/maintenance. We wrote the offer and it was accepted then we spent a lot more time in the house and got my dad to come in and check it out while the inspector was there. luckily for us there was no one actually living in the house when it was on the market.

We looked at the neighborhood and met with the sales agent twice, then went back a 3rd time to pick out our lot. I think twice is definitely enough, especially if the house is already there:). I kind of felt like we were nuts jumping all in after just 2 meetings but I'm glad we did!

We saw ours twice--we saw it with our realtor one morning and brought my in-laws back for a second opinion during an open house that afternoon. I think twice is plenty! We liked our house immediately and it stood out above the others we looked at. It is a major decision but we didn't want to overthink it to a point where we might miss the opportunity.

Once. In the market down here, you don't usually get a chance to look at a house more than once, and when you do look at it, you better put an offer in right away, because things are selling same-day w/ multiple offers right now.

As far as the room dimensions - I think it's perfectly normal to ask for them if they aren't listed.

We put in an offer at the open house! We live in an area that has been a seller's market for years and had recently lost out on multiple houses. I wouldn't worry too much about the dining room table if you love the house. You could always have it cut down!

we saw our house twice before we put the offer in. I felt ready to do it at that point. Our realtor actually wouldn't let us put the offer in after seeing it once. She wanted us to sleep on it and come back and look at it again before making a decision which I appreciated. And I think it's totally normal to ask for dimensions!
