We have three beach trips already planned for this year (2 flying, one driving). We'll probably fly home to see our families one other time this year, and I would guess at least one weekend get away. We usually drive to NYC 1x per year, fly to Florida 2x per year, take a family trip somewhere warm in the winter 1x per year, fly to California 1x per year and then we have 3 out of town weddings and a trip to visit friends this year. It makes us feel like our "old selves" and is important for our sanity. We definitely take advantage of staying with friends/family or at modest hotels to make it affordable, and lots of road trips. As a family, we take about 6-8 trips a year, usually one 'big' one where we need a plane, and the rest local driving destinations for long weekends. If we include personal work travel, and such, I'd say closer to 10 or so per year!</p> <p>We prioritize by making decisions to make more frequent trips to closer/less expensive places, which we find more restful than waiting all year for one or two weeks somewhere. In the last year, we went to Canada to see DHs family twice and Georgia/Virginia to see my family twice. Work stuff is either paid for by work or a tax write off, but I had one conference and DH had a couple of work trips. We had several weddings this past year we had to fly for. And we try to squeeze in at least 2 family vacation per year. The last weekend of April we are spending a week at the beach.</p> <p>As far as priorities...we want to see our families/friends, so we just plan on spending that money. There are definitely some years I wish we could cut back because we spend so much $$. We drive older cars, live below our means in the housing budget category, both work full time and don't have house cleaners and don't eat out much. That kind of thing.</p> <p>We also spend money to fly our parents here when we need extra help: for example, my husband has a week long trip to London coming up for work, and I leave for work at 6:45 am and our babysitter doesn't come till 8am. This year I think will just be 2 - Florida was in February, Cape Cod in June. Then we have LO2 coming in August. </p> <p>Travel is kind of a medium priority for us I guess. We'd love to do more, but we have a lot of financial commitments that come first. It kind of freaks me out to spend thousands on a trip too. I count weekend driving trips in the mix, now that we have an electric car with free charging, my husband is all about the road trips. We took one this month, will take another in April and probably another in May.</p> <p>One way I make it happen without breaking the bank is to limit eating out to one meal a day.
