I've lost count of how many u/s I've had. My OB has a machine in her office so she does one everytime. This takes teh place of using doppler, measuring stomach etc.

I have a growth u/s scheduled at an imaging centre for when I'm 32 weeks though.

Where I'm at in Sweden, I think the norm would be 2 ultrasounds. One in the beginning to date you (around 11 weeks) and one at 20 weeks at the anatomy scan. The NT scan is optional (but in some regions required - they don't do a triple or quad screening here).

I've had 4 ultrasounds. One at 8 weeks to date me before I went home to visit my mom for the holidays (to make sure I'll be back in time for the NT scan). My next was at one of those private ultrasound places - with my mom so she can see the baby (at 10 weeks). Then an NT scan at 13 weeks as soon as we got back, and the last one was at our anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

Mine were covered by insurance. I had 3 total . 16/17 week for dating purposes, the standard 20 week u/s and one at 40 weeks because I was overdue.

I think it also depends on your OB office and if they have an u/s on site. I had a relatively easy pregnancy and my office did does not have an u/s machine on site, so I had to go to the women's hospital for mine. However, my friend, who also had a low risk pregnancy, had many more u/s because her OB office had an u/s machine on site and they just did one at every visit routinely.

I'm 19 weeks and have had 5 so far. My OB has an ultrasound machine in her office, so she did one a each of my first 2 appts for dating. I also had my NT scan at 13 weeks and anatomy scan at 18.5 weeks. I just had my anatomy scan re-done today b/c of some potential abnormalities found at the first one, so that brings me to 5 total so far. Oh, and also now I apparently have placenta previa, so I get at least one more ultrasound at 28 weeks to check on that.

Australia has a similar policy to Canada (gotta love the Commonwealth countries and their free healthcare!!!) I should only have two ultrasounds - 13 weeks and 20 weeks - but as I have irregular cycles, I got a dating ultrasound at 6.5 weeks. Our 13 week ultrasound is not covered by the government healthcare though as it's specifically for the NT testing, which is of course optional. We'll pay out of pocket for that as we want the NT testing regardless.

I'm pretty ok with seeing the baby three times - I just want to make sure all is normal at 13 weeks and then that everything is good at 20 weeks. Beyond that, I can wait.

I should add that I also have the potential to be high risk. I was born 8 weeks early due to a placental abruption. My mom also had an aunt and a few cousins who had placental abruptions in their pregnancies. So the OB wants to monitor me a little more closely because of family history. Plus, the ultrasounds are pretty short. Its not like I am getting an hour long ultrasound each time. Its maybe 2 minutes max to see the baby, get a measurement, and make sure he is moving around okay.

I think that things are a bit different for me because my pregnancy is high risk.
I had an ultrasound at my first appointment which was at 5 weeks, 4 days. Then I had one two weeks later at 7 weeks, 4 days.
I also had one at 10 weeks and one at 12 weeks.
I will be getting more at 15 weeks, 20 weeks, 26 weeks, 30 weeks, and 34/36 weeks. :)
I know it seems like a lot, but it has really given my husband and I a lot of peace of mind. Also, it is super fun to see our baby's progress.

@blushink - i've heard too many aren't good too, but all the OBs i talk to say they've done 1000s of deliveries and no problems doing u/s. in essence, everything in this world will have potential to kill. whether it be cell phones, microwaves, wireless internet and whatever else.

My OB has a machine in the office so I get one every time. Plus I will be going in for my anatomy scan in a couple weeks so I will get an extra one this month. Since I used fertility treatments I had ultrasounds with my RE at 6 and 8 weeks before I was released to an OB. Then my OB had me come in at 9 and 11 weeks. Now I am on the regular monthly schedule. It is pretty nice to have so many pictures, I put them in order and I love to look at the difference between the weeks! It is so awesome!

In Nova Scotia, if you are a low risk preganncy (under 35, no other risk factors), you actually only get one at about 20 weeks.
That's all I officially get.
I went to UC BABy to have a 3d at 23 weeks because my husband had to miss the official one.

I had 4...at my office they typically only do 2 or 3, but because my first ultrasound was earlier than expected they did an extra one. I had my first one (the "dating" ultrasound) at 6 weeks (according to my dates I should have been 8/9 weeks, but the baby measured much smaller), so they did another ultra sound around 8 weeks, and then one at 17 weeks to find out gender (which we didnt, but they still did the downs measurements, and such). And the final biophysical profile at 40 weeks (some people don't get this since they don't make it to week 40). I'm glad we got this final one because it was at that ultra sound we found out little one was breech! I'm glad I didn't go into labor, get to the hospital and get that surprise. It was whirlwind enough to find that out the day prior to my due date.

I'm so new to this that I just assumed each doctor's office has their own. I made our first prenatal appt for the 29th and asked if the SOs usually attend the first one. It wasn't until I asked the receptionist did she tell me that I would go elsewhere for the U/S and any blood work.

I've had 2 so far - a dating ultrasound at my normal doctor at 10 weeks and my NT scan at a specialist at 12 weeks.

At my appointment with my midwife (at 14 weeks) I heard the heartbeat and next week (18 weeks) I have my A/S at the specialist. I'm not sure how many more Ultrasounds I get, but I will either hear the heartbeat or see the baby at all of my appointments and I won't have to pay for any of them.

The health insurance you get through the American military can be a total PITA some times, but when it comes to growing and birthing a baby they're pretty awesome. The military LOVES babies, lol.

I'll have two - one around 11-13 weeks, and one around 20 weeks if I stick with my midwife for care through the whole pregnancy. I think if I was using an OB I might get an additional one at my first appointment to confirm gestational age.

I am in Canada as well, but due to my long cycles, some dating issues, a minor accident, and the fact that my OB has an US in her office I have had 5 already at 14 weeks. The first was at 7 weeks for dating purposes, then they attempted the NT scan at 11 weeks, but baby was 1mm too small, so I went back 10 days later at 12 weeks 4 days. I then had a minor incident where I took a blow to the lower abdomen, so I had an ultrasound in emergency, and one 2 days later at my routine OB visit! It is a lot this early on, but I think it will probably slow down now (I hope)

In Japan, we get 2 free ultrasounds paid for by Japanese National Insurance Plan, which everyone has to be enrolled in, if living here. With this second pregnancy, I'm high risk, so I've had 5 ultrasounds so far, at 30 weeks.

Here in the UK it's not far off from Canada, you get one at about 12 weeks to screen for Down's Syndrome and date the pregnancy. Then you can choose to have a second scan at 20 weeks to check for abnormalities and see the sex (if possible). I had me 20 week scan today and I actually get to go for a 3rd scan, which is unusual, because the baby wasn't cooperating. So we'll have a 3rd scan early next month.
As for the heartbeat, we've only heard it once. I've had 3 midwife visits (5 wks, 10 wks, and 17 wks). We heard the heart at the 3rd visit.

Our insurance will cover 2, so that's how many we will get. I will get one at 8 weeks (next week!) and one at 20 weeks. If there are issues, we'll get more but 2 is what insurance covers so, two is what we'll get.

If I had a normal pregnancy, the plan was for at 13 weeks and 20 weeks. Started at week 16, things got bad fast, so I started getting weekly u/s. At week 25, I was admitted to the hospital and got twice daily u/s. I checked myself out 4 days later (long story), so then went to twice weekly u/s until delivery at 27 weeks.
