It really depends on the day, but i never send her in any clothes that i would be sad if they were ruined. Everything usually ends up stained. When she was an infant she would blow up multiple outfits a day with poop up the back. It was terrible!!!

No daycare, but we send her to preschool and our welcome packet asked us to dress them in clothes that we would be OK with if they got stained, since the kids are constantly playing, painting, getting messy, etc.

She's not totally destroyed at the end of the morning but she definitely has stains!

She gets pretty messy- painting, eating, playing outside...we send her in clothes that we don't care if she gets messy in. I love that she's exploring and getting messy!

LO is about to turn 2 and has only come home dirty once (not counting diaper-related incidents). That was from actual dirt. I'm amazed at how clean she usually is between eating, playing outside twice a day, and crafts.

I'm always amazed at how clean dd comes home at the end of the day, even after I send spaghetti in for lunch! But she's still in the baby room and it's winter so when they play in the snow they're all bundled up. I imagine she will get messier as she gets older!

@ktdid23: that is probably what happened, and they wanted to avoid someone else getting bent out shape for the result of normal kid activities. I guess since to me a reasonable amount of messiness seems like common sense, seeing the letter made me think I should expect above and beyond, like shirts torn in half, mud all over the face, chunks of hair missing ha!

Sounds about right. I am a SAHM and my DD gets so dirty after every meal. We change outfits constantly.

My daughter is 4 and has been going to daycare/preschool since she was 14 weeks old, so I have a bit of experience here :-) I think the packet explaining how/why kids get dirty at school is AWESOME.

I wouldn't expect my kid to come home "in shambles" but the toddler age group is usually practicing skills at school that parents may not practice at home - feeding self with a spoon, drinking from an open face cup, lots of arts/crafts with minimal hands-on help.... So it's usually a good idea to not send your kid to school in something you don't want stained.

Our previous daycare sent home a letter one spring saying that the kids would be going outside more bc of the great weather and to pack appropriate shoes that you didn't mind getting dirty. I asked the daycare director about it and she said they got hell from a parent the previous year bc the parent sent the kid in brand new, white (toddler size) Air Jordan's that went home dirty (from being outside).... And she just wanted to be try to avoid that again.

Once she started in the toddler room, she is a mess. They put one of our old shirts on her when painting but sometimes she still gets it in her. But food and dirt are all over her clothes.

DS is usually a mess when I pick him up - and in a different outfit than I sent him in! He is 8 months old, between drool, food (the main source of mess), the occasional blow out, and snotty daycare noses, he gets pretty gross. That said they are really good about changing him if he gets too much food or drool on his clothes.

One of the daycares I visited included an entire page in the welcome packet about why your child might come home dirty, messy, ruined clothing, etc and I thought this was so odd/funny. I certainly wouldn't expect a pristine child at the end of the day, especially as they get older and do more activities and play outside, but this whole preemptive spiel made me feel like I should expect to pick up my child in shambles every day. Maybe they've had issues before with parents being upset over their kid's clothing getting ruined but I don't know.. Would you think that was weird too or is picking up a destroyed child at the end of the day just par for the course?

As an aside I did not choose this particular daycare (for a bunch of reasons, but not because of this).
