@Thehistoryofus: Heating might make a difference. Thankfully DS takes his bottles at any temperature. We usually let them sit for a bit after they are out of the fridge, but not always.

Will your LO take bottles that aren't heated?

You could try an extra 1/2 ounce in one or two bottles and see if that makes a difference. It's not a lot extra, so if she doesn't waste it and you aren't comfortable using it at the next feeding, it's not a big loss. But it might help to tell if she's more satisfied after a feeding and sleeping better or if it doesn't make a difference.

Per Kelly Mom: "If baby does not finish milk at one feeding, it may be refrigerated and offered at the next feeding before it is discarded."

We have to send bottles ready made to daycare (ie fully thawed with nipples) every day. If anything is unused at the end of the day we have to take it home (but can choose to bring it back the next day).

I believe that once the baby feeds off the bottle (their mouth and saliva touches the nipple) you aren't supposed to reheat the bottle. I have heard differing opinions between re-offering the leftover milk from anywhere between one hour and the next feeding. I would appreciate any real documentation on this anyone can find.

@Thehistoryofus: I'm not sure how daycare stores your milk or if you send frozen or fresh milk. As long as it's in the fridge, fresh milk won't go bad for several days. If you typically send frozen milk, maybe you could send an extra bottle with a couple ounces of fresh milk. They could offer an ounce if she still seems hungry after a bottle, but if she doesn't take it it won't have to be tossed, they can try after another feeding or you can use it the next day.

Also I mixed milk (fresh and frozen) to fill his bottles. I always made sure I froze milk quickly, and only thawed when I knew it would be used. I also marked bottles that had frozen milk in them so daycare would feed those first. I never had a problem. (I just added this in case you were worried about logistics of sending extra and how to use the extra milk if she didn't drink it)

@Thehistoryofus: That is true for the over feeding.. when i worked at a daycare we were allowed to heat the bottle twice... Does your daycare only do once? We also used a crock pot and not a microwave, so I think heating the bottle twice if LO doesn't drink it all the first time is ok.

Thanks for the responses. I think you all are confirming what I'm feeling.

@lovelife: The problem with just adding an ounce is that over the course of a day, thats an extra four ounces. First, if she doesn't finish a bottle, that extra ounce has to be thrown out. Second, if its there, I'm worried they will try to get her to finish it and over feed her.

@mrstilly: Thanks for popping over to this thread, After the other thread started to change topics I thought a new thread was needed. I am thinking the 4 month regression might be to play as well. I'm going to talk to her Dr. about solids because shes a big baby (I'm guessing almost 17 pounds) to see if that may help some too.

When daycare told me my son seemed to be wanting more I added 1 oz more per bottle and asked them to be very diligent on telling me exactly how much he would drink (they rinse out the bottles after he is done so I don't always know if he drank all of it or left maybe 1/2 oz or so). I did that for about a week and then adjusted accordingly to what he wanted to drink routinely and then asked them to let me know the next time he started to seem to routinely want more.

La Leche League recommends between 1 1/2 and 2 oz per hour that you are gone. This value will never go up after about 3 months old. We have found that my little man eats on me at 4:00 am, eats 6 oz in the morning at 7 am, me for lunch, 2-4 oz at 1 pm and then me at 4 pm. You will find many daycares don't know about breast feeding and assume it is the same as formula when it isn't. Also make sure that they are feeding when your child is hungry and not just as a soothing technique.

I would suggest this is probably a sleep regression and not a food issue. If you think more food would help, nurse in the evening and then offer a bottle of pumped milk. This will top her up. Your milk amounts do usually go down at night after all the hard work during the day. So that could be the case.

DS took 4 bottles 4-oz each during a 9-10 hour day at daycare. I nursed him in the morning, sometimes twice depending on when he got up. I nursed him as soon as we got home, an hour later and before bed.

Maybe try adding an extra nursing session in in the evenings? I would try that first. If that doesn't help, maybe add an ounce to the second two bottles he takes.

Also, keep in mind that there is usually a sleep regression around 4 months.

I would up it an oz for each feeding and see how that goes... check in with the daycare staff regularly.... I say its better to take take too much than not enough, you could always take the extra home with you to use.

I am really struggling with this question right now. My LO started daycare at 3 months old and has been there for a month now. She is there for about 10 hours everyday. I feed her in the mornings before I drop her off but am still struggling to determine how much milk to leave for her.

We started with four 4 oz bottles. We figured this allows her to eat about every two to three hours. It seems to work out ok but she's not sleeping well at night and the daycare thinks she could eat a bit more.

I have heard breastfed babies should drink about an ounce per hour or up to about 30 ounces per day when they are between one and six months old. If she's getting 16 ounces during the day from four feedigs I'm sure she is getting about that in the time she is home from her four nursing sessions (dinner, bed time, middle of the night, and breakfast). She is now waking up twice per night though which is frustrating.

Any suggestions?!
