@snowjewelz: I've never seen them feed my LO, but, I have seen them feed other babies. And they do pace feeds --removing the nipple, talking to the baby, reoffering it again, rinse, repeat.

@josina: @Ms.Badger: We actually asked them to feed him every 2 hours. He has reflux and seems to do better with smaller, more frequent feeds. When he's with me, he typically eats 2x/awake period during the day. He's eating less often at daycare than at home. I think they would die laughing if I suggested feeding him once every hour though!

Yea I think thats plenty of milk. I would just tell them you really can't provide more right now and they will have to get through the next few weeks until he starts solids.

Also, what about napping? Could it be that he's tired?

That is a lot of food! But a friend of mine's son takes about 20 ounces a day and he's a little older than mine. He's always taken that much, though, and she always makes that much.

Mine is 5 months today. He's there for 9 hours. He gets (3) 4-oz bottles a day. Every day. And I pump about that much, give or take an ounce or two, so I don't feel like it's too much or too little. Our Friday daycare sitter always says he's sooooooo hungry and will give him 14 oz instead of his usual 12. But then he won't nurse for at good 4-5 hours after I pick him up, so I know he wasn't actually hungry.

Your kid might just be bored and/or want to suck on something. It shuts them up, you know?

Are the day care providers reading his hungry cues to find him every two hours? Maybe the every two hour schedule is just too often. My LO (4.5 mo) eats 5 oz at a time but every 2.5 - 4 hours so has 15 oz a day. Anytime we try to give him a molecule less than 5 ounces he acts like he hasn't eaten in days, but that can hold him over for a long time

How long has the increased amount been going on? Is it possible your LO is going through a growth spurt? That happened to us a few times (my LO almost always took 3x4oz bottles, but there were weeks where she needed 5 or even 6 oz bottles). It always freaked me out but it usually passed within a week or so. Otherwise, maybe a pacifier would help if he is just eating for comfort? It definitely does sound like he is getting enough or more than enough already, especially if you are nursing so many times at home as well.

Btw, sometimes you need to just be really strict with daycare teachers (and other caretakers) about milk. My LO would gladly eat all day and night if we let her, and one time my MIL babysat for 3 hours and fed her the entire next day's daycare stash (9 hours worth) during that time. Overfeeding can be tricky.

Are they letting him eat too fast so that he appears to still want to eat since he doesn't realize he's full?

@lilyofthewest: Wow. Reading comprehension is terrible today. 4 ounces every two hours should be PLENTY. Day care teachers need to back off.

I am right there with you! I pump in the morning at night (and sometimes while nursing) to make up for what she eats vs what i pump at work. Maybe he is eating for comfort? I don't think 16+ oz is too crazy but every baby is so different, and it's hard to know what he's getting per "serving" from you. My daughter is not a huge eater, I try to send 12 oz a day sometimes she finishes but not always. However, I pump about 10oz at work depending on how stressed I am, so on the days she finishes all her bottles I'm like ugggh. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but here to commiserate!

At that age my LO was eating (3) 5-oz bottles at daycare (9 hours), 1 bottle about every 3 hours. I wonder if bigger bottles with longer intervals would make a difference?

Have you started solids yet? 5.5months was when my LO was taking her biggest bottles (5 ounces every 3 hours). At 6 months when we added purees she went back to 4 ounces every 3 hours.

ETA: I should finish reading before I respond. Until you start solids, I don't think it's unreasonable that he might need more than 4 ounces every three hours.

Baby is 5.5mos and has been at daycare for 3.5 weeks. He's there for about 9 hours/day.

When he first started going, I was sending four 3 to 3.5oz bottles with him. That seemed to match up both with what I could readily pump during three work pumps and with the Kellymom recommendation of 1.5oz/hour apart.

His daycare providers kept saying that he seemed very hungry, so, I've tried to up what I'm sending. He's now getting four 4 to 4.25oz bottles.

But they still say he's really hungry! In order to send the current volume, I'm now pumping before work, three times during work, and often another time before bed.

I've seen them feed other babies when I'm dropping off/picking up. They seem to pace the feeds well and don't push finishing bottles.

Can he really be wanting to eat more than 16-17oz in 9 hours?? In addition to what he takes in at daycare, he's also nursing 1-2 times in the morning before daycare, 1-2 times in the evening afterwards, and 3 times overnight. No solids yet. He still has a strong tongue-thrust reflex, so, I don't think he's quite ready.

Any advice (or commiseration)?
