@lamariniere: I made a rainbow layer cake for my other daughters birthday and measured the batter as precisely as I could without a good scale and they were still uneven. But it looked beautiful and she was thrilled so whatever. 😊

I made an 8” round layer cake for my DD’s recent birthday party. It had 2 normal layers and 1 skinny layer since I didn’t measure out the batter very precisely. Oops. We had 8 kids and 6 adults and only served about 1/3 of the cake. The kids were more interested in playing than eating cake!

Plus- I’ll make chocolate frosting for the cake and vanilla frosting for the cupcakes (dyed purple for the birthday girl of course).

@Mrsbells: good call having enough for all the kids to have the same!

@kiddosc: I have 8 or 9 inch pans- ill probably do the 9!inch and have fairly two fairly thin layers.

@wrkbrk: I feel like it depends on the shape of the cake and how you slice it! Like a rectangle cake you can easily cut into reasonably sized squares for each kid. But with a round cake and cutting actual slices it’s harder to cut a small piece without it seeming like a sliver!

Ok- two boxes it is. So I’ll have a 9 inch two layer cake, use two of the cupcakes for the monkeys ears, and the rest as regular cupcakes (probably 20 ish). And I’ll force leftovers on my friends. 😊

I agree with @MamaBear87: Make the cake and the cupcakes and let them have seconds or take a cupcake home. My pet peeve is parents cutting birthday cake into imperceptible slivers so there’s enough for each kid. There really is nothing worse than not having enough cake for kiddos!!

How big are your layers? I made a 2 layer 10-inch cake for E's last party and each layer took a whole box. It was just enough to serve 10 6 year olds and another 10-ish adults.

Yea for our parties with similar numbers I do one box to make 2 round layers, and then another box to make cupcakes.

@Foodnerd81: i would do two boxes and just make sure you have enough cupcakes for all 10 kids. Because as soonnas the 1st kids takes a cupcake everyone else will want one too

@krispi: what parties are you going to, cake slices are HUGE at the parties I seem to attend, lol!

I wouldn't cut the cake in wedges, I would cut it in a grid pattern and you'll have enough I think. One box would be enough for two layers, if you "doctor" it and increase the ingredients, you'll get more batter.

We had 10 kids plus their parents and some extra adults like grandparents at my daughter's party. I made 24 cupcakes (1 box). My husband panicked at the last minute and ran out and bought extra cupcakes, but we didn't need them. All the kids had a cupcake, but not all the adults did, and we had plenty left over. I would say make 1 box and you'll have plenty. People tend to cut pretty small pieces of cake at parties.

I would make just the cake and serve small pieces. Not everyone will want a piece or parents & kids will share.

I just did cupcakes and one box is basically two dozen. If you did both then there would be enough for a piece of cake and cupcake for everyone.

@Foodnerd81: oh totally! I have boxes in the pantry for time/toddler emergencies.
I'd make the cake and then some cupcakes too. Nothing worse than not having enough

Just make everyone take a cupcake home ☺

I always have leftover cake because I always overestimate! For reference, I ordered a half-sheet cake for my son's birthday. We had about 25 adults and 15 kids and barely went through a quarter sheet's worth of cake. I think 2 box mixes would definitely be enough!

@MamaBear87: I think they say it makes 24 but it’s more like 18-20 — the box mixes have gotten smaller! I guess I’m worried about cutting the slices small enough from a round cake. If I made it 9X13 I’d have no problem.

ETA: and I used to bake from scratch, and still absolutely insist on making frosting from scratch, but with little kids, sometimes a box is just the right call :silly:

I think if you do a 2 layer cake it's likely plenty. A box makes 24 cupcakes right? So that should be the same ish number of servings with a cake

I usually bake from scratch so I'm also bad at estimating 😂

We are having a small birthday party for my almost 3 year this weekend. We will have about ten little kids between the ages of 2 and 5, and i think 11 adults. (I call it small because it’s just her 4 best friends and their families who mostly happen to include my best friends). Im making a layer cake using a box mix. How many mixes would you make? I’d probably do the monkey layer cake (2 layers, pictured below) and then the rest as cupcakes. Two box mixes should do it right? Or would one be enough and with two we will have way too many leftovers? I’m decent at baking but really bad at estimating.
