@Navy_Mommy: You can also get a hands free pumping bra so your hands are available to massage instead of holding the flange/bottle setup on.

@Navy_Mommy: I would rest the bottles on my lap, use my left arm to hold the left bottle in place, my left hand to hold the right bottle in place, and massage my right breast with my right hand. Then I'd switch. I hope that makes sense!!!

@mrs. wagon: I currently have a hospital pump. How do you massage your breasts while your pumping? I'm holding the bottles to each of my breasts.

It took me a while, but now I can get 6 to 8 oz from each side at each pumping session (and I only pump about 3 times a day).

Uhh... forgot to actually answer the question. Sorry! I averaged probably around 10 oz per session. At my peak I was producing 16 oz a session!

Make sure you are massaging as you pump and wait for a second let-down!! Also, if your pump isn't doing a good job, consider renting a hospital-grade pump.

I think I got 2 oz if I was lucky. Now, LO is 12 weeks and I'm only getting about 3-4 oz from each boob, depending on the time of day.

i got about 2 ounces in the beginning with both charlie and olive. your milk supply is still being established and it will definitely go up over time.

now it really depends on time of day i pump and last time i pumped/nursed, but the most i can get is about 4 oz on each side in my first pump of the morning. usually it's less.

@Navy_Mommy: haha babies are a lot better at expressing milk than pumps! Sometimes when the pump wasn't suctioned properly, I wouldn't pump as much! So you might wanna check that too

In the beginning I only pumped 1-2 ounces from each boob. I was so disappointed too!
I haven't pumped in forever, but I think last time I pumped (8 months ago) I was up to about 4 ounces per side.

@Navy_Mommy: Hand expressing after pumping can make a huge difference. Also, if baby is still feeding every hour or two, your body is making plenty. It's when those feedings start to stretch out that pumping decent amounts starts becoming more of the norm. At least it was this way for me.

I was able to hand express a bunch more so now I have ALMOST 2 ounces in all...I guess if that's normal, I can't complain. I was just expecting more...

How old is your baby? I think your experience is VERY common. I didn't get much the first time I pumped, because it was all going to the baby. I had to stay on a schedule of pumping every day at the same time before I started producing extra milk to
keep in the freezer. For me, it wasn't really practical to do until
my son stopped cluster feeding every night (sometime around 2-3 months). Now my body knows to produce an extra 3-4 ounces in the evening. The kellymom website had some good tips.

OK - so I really dislike pumping. But I'm TRYING to do it so that DH can feed DS (he wants to) and to have a back-up supply just in case anything were to happen to me (get sick, etc.) I'd still be able to give him breastmilk.

So I forced myself to sit down and pump and after 15-ish minutes I had completely stopped producing any additional milk and I only got like 1/2 ounce from one side and just under 1 ounce on the other.

Is that normal???? Will I ever start being able to pump more or am I going to have to pump a bazillion times a day in order to get enough for DH to give DS 1 bottle a day AND build up a stash???
