@tiramisu: Thanks, I will call my Peditrician and find out, especially since I am breastfeeding.

I'd check with your pediatrician. Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding? Rice cereal and formula are iron fortified. At 6 months, I wasn't giving my LO very much rice cereal and she was mainly just drinking breastmilk. Maybe 1 or 2 Tbsp a day of rice cereal. At her 9 month check up her iron levels were horribly low. After that I gave her alot more cereal (oatmeal and brown rice) and other iron rich foods. Every baby is different though...some are fine without the cereal.

I didn't do any cereal at that age, and not much later. That's a really outdated recommendation, imho. Just feed whatever your baby is interested in, and make sure to balance it out with lots of proteins and plants.

My son is 6.5 months and he just doesn't like cereal as much as other foods. I just use it as a thickener for runnier purées so it's easier to spoon and he gets some that way. Brown rice cereal was constipating so he does better on oatmeal. Our pediatrician said just try to get one serving a day in him for the vitamins since he's breastfed but he really mostly gets other food.

@Mrs.Waffles: I've gotten that some too! I usually explain that the recommendations have changed, but that I appreciate the advice. This is actually an accurate statement (that the recommendations have changed) - many peds don't even recommend rice as the first food anymore as it has been found to be lacking in health benefits. We have tried rice cereal before (as just part of our rotation) and my son hated it. I ended up trying it and I can't blame him! It tastes horrible! Maybe try a veggie or something (assuming you are comfortable with it) and see if he eats more?

@Mrs.Waffles: I think you're totally fine. When Xander was 6 months, he wasn't even interested in solids. I think I usually did 1-2 tsp of the rice cereal and mixed with breast milk and then slowly up the amount or introduced other purees.

Thanks everyone, I agree with all you that the majority of their diet should come from Breastmilk or formula. I have just been getting comments from relatives saying that I need to give him more cereal and then I looked up online and found a few articles saying they should take about 2 to 4 ounces. My LO only seems to want to take an ounce, so that's what I been giving him.

I have a 7.5 month old and he averages about 4 ounces a day. We usually feed him 30 minutes after he nurses and we feed him until he doesn't seem to want any more. As @snowjewelz: says, milk should still be your LO's main source of nutrition at that age. I wouldn't worry about the amount as much as keep trying to encourage it.

Similar to other posters, we skipped rice cereal, but that was just a personal choice. Do what works for your family (as is approved by your ped).

We did not do any cereal at that age. Rice cereal really isn't as beneficial, and other grains are hard to digest. We started with veggies and fruit and then added oatmeal. @snowjewelz: "Also, I think of the phrase "food before one is just for fun"... I think the idea behind is that babies should get most of their nutrition from milk still?" <-- this exactly!

I have no experience since my LO is only 3.5 mo... But I read that a lot of studies show that there isn't any benefits to them eating rice cereal, so a lot of people just start on purees (veggie ones). Also, I think of the phrase "food before one is just for fun"... I think the idea behind is that babies should get most of their nutrition from milk still?

Hi everyone,
I don't know if I am feeding my LO enough cereal. I read that at 6 months they should be taking 3 to 4 tablespoons of cereal once or twice a day. So basically 2 to 4 ounces daily. I currently feed LO 1 ounce of cereal a day. Is that too little?
