I too like @raspberries example. Anything beyond that isn't, to me, all that age appropriate. And you have to consider the broader ramifications of talking in detail to a child, kids talk to one another and before you know it Betty down the road knows you were dilated xx at xx!
Honestly, I personally would find the whole thing uncomfortable - but I am not a birth story fan. Maybe write it downa nd let her come to you if she wants to know as she/he gets older.
FWIW, My mom told me I was born on a friday, how she got to the hospital and that the sun was shining and it was a beautiful autumn day - that was lovely and plenty of info for me!

My ex's mom wrote him a letter with details of when he was born and gave it to him on his 21st birthday. He was disgusted and embarassed by it.

As a female, I'm sure it would be different but who knows. I really like the example that @raspberries: gave. I don't think much more detail is really necessary.

I would put as much information as I remember. Basically the same version I feel comfort posting on here!

@Cole: I love the keepsake idea. That would be great for when they share the news of expecting their first.

I think I'm going to sit down soon and write both girls Down!

In my baby book my mom wrote mine. She included how dialated she was and when her water broke but nothing gory. She addressed that it hurt and she wanted an epidural but that it was too late so they gave her gas which made her super loopy. I read it when I was younger and never thought twice about it and now I am glad to have it.

I think when most people flip through the book they will skip the birth story if that's not their thing. Lots of women love reading them too so if you don't mind them knowing I would go ahead and include it.

Alternately, you could write out the full story and put it in an envelope in a box with other keepsakes. When she is ready to read it she can.

I wrote a two page letter to my son about the days leading up to his birth. It doesn't go into much detail at all, but it does map out the events of the day he was born, more or less.

I agree with @raspberries: and @birdofafeather:

I like Raspberries' example.

I know that I was born on a Sunday, and that my mom was supposed to go to an ice cream social that day (which is funny to me because it was october. Who has an ice cream social in october??)

I don't want or need to know much beyond that. I think the medical stuff probably means more to you than it ever would to your child. I'd write it down for yourself, but only share it if your child asks about it some day.

@pui: yeah and along the lines of what @raspberries: said, i don't think a kiddo gets it and it just mucks up the story. also, if friends and family could possibly read it, i would rather leave dilation out. i'm fine telling close friends and family stuff like that after the fact, but would find it kinda awkward for them to read that in my kid's book.

I'd probably be pretty vague if you want a 7-year-old to appreciate it... something along the lines of "I started to feel some pain around 8:30, Daddy grabbed all of our things and we checked into the hospital at 9. The doctors and nurses were great, and we were both so excited to meet you! You arrived via c-section at 3, and we fell in love with you right away." You know what I mean? Less medical detail, more emotions.

Then write a very detailed story with the medical details that they can read when they know what contractions are and won't be scared by hearing about you being in pain/danger/bleeding.

@pui: i would put the kid friendly one in the book. more euphemisms and generalities (ie, no dilation, gory details, etc) and then a letter with one for her adult self to read with all the gory details. i wish my mom had more details for me!

I can definitely write 2 birth stories, but how much detail should I include in the one for the book?

Another thing to keep in mind is that this book will likely also be read by family and close friends (I plan on having it out to share with people).

When I got home from the hospital, I made a point to write down her birth story, so I wouldn't forget anything. I agree with the above: have one age appropriate story and another for when she's older. Your post reminds me I need to get started on my baby book! I think it's a great thing to share with her in the future.

I had been thinking about this (but then we found out he was a boy so I think it is less relevant, my brother/dh would not be interested) I was going to make one directed to a 10 year old which is how I have written other stuff but write one I could give her one day when she was older as @loki: suggested, I know I have talked about my birth with my mum loads.

i would maybe include two versions? or write two versions and save one for when she's an adult. i know that now i'm pregnant i LOVE all the gory details and wanna hear every single thing. obviously that wouldn't be appropriate for a child. but it might be nice for her to have an adult version one day too! just a thought.

(Not sure where to put this?)

I am working on a baby book for DD. I've written everything in it as if I am writing it to her as a letter.

I want to include her birth story in the book. I think it should be real, but not so detailed it's something that will freak future her out lol. I'm not sure how much detail is too much? Obviously I didn't go in to all the bodily fluids and gross stuff like that lol, but I do talk about the pain and how dilated I was at various times. I tried to focus on how I felt (emotionally) rather than just put in a bunch of medical jargon, but the medical stuff is still there.

I want this to be something a 7 year old could read and not be traumatized, but also something DD can read as an adult when she is possibly having her own children.

How much detail would you include in a birth story meant for your child to read?
