@PurpleUnicorn: EC (I believe) in this case means elimination communication. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elimination_communication

I give my LO diaper free time after she wakes and eats, after her naps and before bed..unless we have to go somewhere. She generally sits there for 20-30 minutes. I put her on prefolds (we cloth diaper). She pees a lot but I just give her a new cloth. She wears a shirt and socks during it. She is 7.5 months but not mobile. Good luck!

Do you live near the beach? That worked well for us (pantless LOs are okay until about 2, IMO). We also put LO on a yoga mat for indoor time.

DS had a really bad rash when he was around 7 months old. He was crawling so we just put down a bunch of towels and let him go for as long as we could between naps. It was messy but got it cleared up in a weekend. It also helps that we have hardwood floors so easy clean up when he did go. I also watched him like a hawk for any signs that he might be ready to pee or poo and always kept a towel handy. We washed a lot of towels that weekend!

@PurpleUnicorn: VERY lucky. We almost never have a bad one. Mostly luck, I think. She had a bit more when she started eating oranges, so we limited them for a while and she seemed to get over them.

We do 30 minutes of naked play every night before bath. (DD is 14 months and active) We keep the play kind of crazy and as long as she's entertained enough she doesn't pee. But she's definitely peed on the rug multiple times and pooped twice. We clean it up and it doesn't bug us too much!

Also, she gets plenty of extra naked time (two more 30 minute sessions) if she has a bad rash.

@Honeybee: same--we extend bathtime. also sometimes I do first thing in the morning on an easy to wash, absorbent blanket--not the greatest time for accident prevention but it's the only time the house seems warm enough to do it.

@PurpleUnicorn: We do long diaper changes too! And it could most definitely have been the diapers! I know I had to stop making our own laundry detergent b/c it caused P to get more rashes. I think I may give P some diaper free time today..... maybe it'll prompt me to put her on the potty more and actually start EC! lol

I give DS diaper free time every day before/after hIs bath. It's not a big issue if he pees, since we have wood floors. I just make sure to watch him closely so I can clean up any messes immediately.

@runsyellowlites: his doctor actually said to use cotton pants and when he sleeps so i can do it "as much as possible"...maybe she meant for healing the rash and not from now on though. i have an appointment this week so i'll talk to her about it again.

thanks for the tips, i will try naked time when he is awake and see how that goes. what i have been doing is when i do diaper changes, i purposely take a long time so he is laying on the change table diaper free between diapers. sometimes for up to 10-15 minutes. i was doing that a few times a day and his rash still wasn't going away. but then we switched diapers and it cleared up (almost) in 2 days! so the diapers could have been the problem too. but i want to make sure it doesn't happen like this again.

I don't give P nearly enough diaper free time. =/ When I did though I would put her on a chux pad (like @prettylizy suggested) and just let her roll around. I had alot of trouble ever getting her to stay on them though so daiper free doesn't happen much. I need to give her some today so I think I may put some pads down under a large blanket and let her roll free around the living room!

I don't think I would brave it during sleep time though. I remember once when G's diaper came off while he was sleeping and boy was that a scary mess to clean up! Maybe your pedi was talking about putting on a type of cloth training pant so that poo would still be someone contained but they can breathe?

I would get her completely naked and put her down on the pee pad for as long as she would stay awake (this was in the pre-crawling days). So maybe 30-45 minutes a day, and not every day, but we didn't have big problems with diaper rash either. I wouldn't want to put her to sleep without a diaper for the same reasons you posted, and I really wouldn't want her rolling around in it so I always did nakey time when she was awake with me.

I just liked the idea of giving her skin a little breathing time since we opted to go with disposible diapers, plus her tiny little bum was so darn cute!

I say go with what feels comfortable for you, if you don't like putting him to sleep diaper free, then just do it when he's awake. Even 10 minutes of diaper free time will help if he's fighting a rash.

@prettylizy: how long would you do it for and how many times in a day? and was she naked or wearing light clothes? my doctor told me to do it with him wearing cotton pants and when he sleeps, so that's what i did, but i found it was so messy and possibly what woke him from his nap. I did put a mattress protector thing-y under him so it was just his clothes that got messy and i threw it out after (it was a disposable one).

And did u find it helped with preventing diaper rash?

I would do it during her awake time, when she was on her play mat or doing tummy time. I would always put a puppy pee pad under her, so if she went I could just wiper her down and throw out the mess. The are awesome. I always keep one or two in my diaper bag in case of a blowout while we're on the go or if I don't have a great clean place to put her down to change her.

So we are overcoming a persistent rash and i know all the advice (including my doctor's) was to give him diaper-free time. I hesitated on this because he seriously pees every hour so i was trying to figure when and how to do it to minimize the mess. I finally put him down for a nap yesterday with no diaper and he hadn't drank for about an hour a half (and i cleaned him up before i put him down)...well, 45 minutes later he woke up in a mess of his pee and poo!

Any tricks for doing diaper-free time and when is the best time to do it?
