My private undergrad was about $45,000 a year (totally crazy, but it included everything, including room and board), and my parents paid for it (bless them...)

Graduate school was...hm...I don't know. It was a state school and my TA position paid for it.

Masters of law: less than 20k also paid for by law school.

DH: undergrad: ~25k for instate public school. He worked through school to pay for it.

My parents paid for my undergraduate degree. I think it was about $25k/yr in the late 90s. The school is much more expensive now. My parents paid for three years plus a summer session, then I got a full time job at the university during my senior year and took a couple of classes for free as an employee benefit.

My masters degree was $36,000. I did it part time over four years while working full time, and I got about half of it paid for by my employer. So I spent an average of $4,500 per year which I was able to afford pretty easily with my paycheck. It was hard doing full time work and part time grad school though!

My private university was about $35k/year. I had about $25k/year covered by scholarships and grants. My parents contributed a little and I ended up with about $20k in loans. I had paid internships and summer jobs the entire time except my study abroad year. I graduated in 2003. The last time I checked, tuition plus room and board was over $65k/year for undergrad. My kids will not be going to my alma matter.

@Applesandbananas: Oh goodness, I'm honestly not sure of the hard numbers. What I do know is that my husband and I have over $100K in college debt for my undergrad, his undergrad, and his grad school. No bueno ...

I believe our undergrad was $15k per year, at a state school. His grad school was $8k a year, because he was an assistant in his department (he got a little stipend).

6 years of "state affiliated" school (professional degree) = $110,000 in student debt. I'm 8 years out and down to 60k. I feel like I'm getting nowhere but I guess I'm inching in on 50% paid off :/ I also paid off my husbands school loan for 20k since we've been married.

I paid nothing for my public school degree as my parents paid for it, but I estimate that I cost them about $25K per year all in as I didn't work except for very part time jobs and that was all extra spending $ for me.

4 years of private school, 2 of those with room and board. About $150k sticker price. I took out $27k in loans, my parents paid for $25k, and the rest was covered by scholarships and grants. I was on a full ride my final 2 years.

I also took one full semester and summer off somewhere in the middle there to do nothing but work my butt off full time, and most of the money I made during that time also went to tuition. I probably contributed $8-9k out of pocket while I was in school.

First one to go to college in my family and knew from the beginning I would have little to no help financially. I went to a state-related (partial state funding) college and I left college with about 55k in student loans. I definitely don't regret the school or the program I graduated with. I was able to find a job (career) in my field right out of college due to the experiences I got.
I do think nowadays, it might be harder to get a job fresh from college. I probably would have to do more internships to get seen and stand out from the rest. I did delay my graduation by a semester so I could do a co-op (internship) and I don't regret that. I'm part of a small group that actually got a job with the degree I went to school for. Others asked for advice on how I got into the field and I always said you need to do an internship (co-op). You really did need hands on experience to get into my field.

So the student loans I got are totally worth it. Would have been nice to have my parents pay for it but considering my parents only finished high school in Vietnam and escaped from Vietnam to move to the U.S. to give us better opportunities, I am very proud to be the first one in my family to go to college.

Sticker price was $110,000 going to a 4-year private liberal arts school for undergrad. I received about $70,000 in school grants and scholarships, $20,000 was paid by my parents, and the other $20,000 were student loans that I took and paid for.

DH went to an in-state school that was around $32,000, and received $12,000 in scholarships. The remaining $20,000 was paid by student loans. He had no help from his parents at all.

For me personally, undergrad was $0. My parents paid and I also went to an in-state school, so it was really not bad at all compared to some. For grad, I had a scholarship for a couple semesters and ultimately took out about $20K in student loans for the rest. Still paying it off, but it certainly could be way worse. My H has zero debt so that helps.

Oh, I forgot - I took out $100K in loans for law school. It sounds like a lot but a lot of my friends left with double or more than that. I was a TA the last year and earned a living stipend and paid no health fees or tuition under that program. I also spent two years as a research assistant to a professor as a part time job and got paid a modest hourly rate in the summer as a government law clerk. I also received about $12K in scholarships. My grandfather out of the blue offered to help me with some living expenses so that was a huge help. I also received loan repayment assistance for the first two years after law school that covered all of my loan payments until I maxed out the income requirement for working for a government agency so that helped a lot too. We have been super aggressive about my loans and have about $13K left on them after being out of school 4 years and we are praying we can be done before the end of this year.

DH went to a private law school in a super expensive metro area part time for 4 years so he had $170K and that's with a ton of paid jobs, scholarships, and grants!! He was unemployed for a long time after law school so had to defer his loans for 16 months and oh my god the interest balloon!! When we first started repaying he was at nearly $200k!! We are at $120k for him now after 4 years of payments and hope we can finish his off in the next few years. Ugh.

I actually don't remember. I have a feeling it was about $10-15k/year after need-based fellowships were applied (private university). Between my parent's help, work-study, and my summer jobs, I graduated with about 10k in loans.

Grad school - about $140k in debt for professional and masters degrees, $0k for PhD.

4 years Tuition, Room, Board at a private college $100k. I had student loans of $17k when I graduated, my parents paid the balance. I paid off the loans in full about 6 years later.

2 years in masters program, covered primarily by tuition reimbursement and a 1 year "waiting period" post completion, I paid about half...I'd have to look it up to see the exact figures.
