@winniebee: I had a friend who worked in Investment Banking with a strict dress code, and she relaxed the rules a lot, especially towards the end. She said in the first 2 trimesters, she wore a lot of her regular suit jackets, just not buttoned and used a lot of those jersey tops, the ones with the dropped waists. Gap has a ton of those right now, in the regular womens section.

You might also need new shoes, so keep that in mind, and if your ankles get swollen, you might not be in the mood to wear skirts, if you know what I mean, so I'd look for more pants.

Best of luck!

Less than $50 and 21 weeks now. Luckily my sister gave me her box of maternity clothes when she was pregnant two winters ago. Good thing she's only a size bigger than me, I am sooo going to wear everything I can and not spend too much money on clothes to wear for the next 4.5 months :)

My aunt just gave me a giant box of maternity clothes---so happy! It has been passed from friend to friend and she said that she doesn't want to see it back. I'm just to add my additions and pass it on to my next pregnant friend. Now I am ready for the bump to arrive!!!

@ Lozza - I didn't (but I'm lazy!) I probably could avoid spending so much if I did that though. There's a goodwill near me....

I'm probably at about $500 at 17 weeks. My boobs forced me out of the majority of my regular shirts weeks ago, and I was in maternity jeans by 10 weeks. I have gained next to nothing, but my body has really changed.
And I've had a few friends offer their clothes, but I have a 35 inch inseam, which means no one's pants are long enough. My MIL was kind enough to grab some stuff from Motherhood a while back,, too, so as long as I don't get huge, I think I'll be pretty set for the remainder of my pregnancy.

You guys have done such a good job of being frugal...I feel guilty!!!

But, I have the same problem as @ eupenmalmody - work in a law firm and can't wear leggings, jeans, or really anything casual. And none of my pre-pregnancy clothing is pregnancy friendly and I have no hand me downs. Also, I live in Boston and can't wear anything summery anymore. Ok, now I sound like I'm trying to make myself not feel so guilty....

I have probably spent $700 and I'm just 12 weeks!! Eek. A lot of this was on transitional clothing - I owned NO flowy blouses or anything that I could wear from week 8 on (when I started needing the bella band) and pretty much had to stop wearing most of my "normal" clothing. I'll be able to wear a lot of these tops post-pregnancy.

In a nutshell, I've gotten: 2 tanks, 2 long sleeve t's, 6 flowy tops (work/weekend), 1 maternity button down (work), 1 long cardigan (work/weekend), 1 black shift dress (work), 4 sweaters (work and weekend), 3 trousers (work), 1 skirt, and 2 jeans (one super cheap skinny jeans and one nice pair). Most of my purchases were Gap, Old Navy, and a few from Destination Maternity.

Probably about $500-$600. I inherited/borrowed a lot of stuff, but very little of it was work-appropriate, and there was no wintery stuff, so I ended up spending my money on stuff like 3 nice pairs of pants and a couple skirts/dresses, as well as a maternity coat and a few sweaters. I didn't go crazy- my pants were all from Gap, and almost all my tops were from Target, so it's not like I was going all designer- if I hadn't needed work clothes, I probably could have gotten away with spending $150 or so.
I switched to maternity pants around 16 weeks, and wore mainly non-maternity tops till about 28 weeks, but then it just wasn't feasible anymore. I didn't gain so much (23 lbs total), but even loose-fitting non-maternity stuff wouldn't cover my belly anymore.

So far I've spent 200.... including a couple nice dresses (for formal functions & church) a pair of jeans (that were actually on sale) and panties and bras.... I got quite a few things from my SIL who was recently pregnant and around the same size as me.

I figure I'll be at about the 500 mark by the end of the pregnancy.

I have spent a lot $1000+ BUT I work in a law firm where I cannot get away with dressing down. No jeans, no leggings, no t-shirts, etc. So, I have had no choice but to buy nice work outfits. In addition, I stopped fitting in my pre-pregnancy clothing around 14 weeks. I stupidly bought maternity clothing that fit around then, but now at 30 weeks, a lot of what I previously bought is too small (i'm also up over 30 pounds).

I think I spent about $200. $100 of it was for a pair of jeans that didn't make me feel like I was 1000 pounds and the rest would fall under the category of new bras and non-maternity shirts in a bigger size (that I now don't wear b/c they look so frumpy).

I'm 34 weeks, and still wear a lot of my pre-pregnancy clothes. But my sister loaned me a TON of stuff, mostly things that she had been given or bought used. I bought two sweaters and a pair of skinny jeans (I love showing off my boots!) at gap for $70, and that's all I've spent. I also work in operating rooms and wear scrubs every day so work clothes are not an issue for me at all. I would say to look at craigslist a lot - I have seen many people selling bundles of maternity clothes, most of the stuff is relatively new-looking since you only wear it for a few months, maybe through a few pregnancies but still good condition. Don't forget to check when they delivered so you don't get a ton of summer stuff :)

I have spent about $700, I got 3 pairs of jeans, a pair of dress pants, 2 dresses, 3 nice tops, 2 long sleeved shirts, 3 tank tops, a couple of cardigans, and a winter jacket. I wanted to stock up while I was in a bigger city, because my small city has like 1 boutique maternity store. I might have gone a little overboard, but since I ended up switching to maternity clothes early, and this is just my first pregnancy, I don't feel bad about it at all!

I think I spent about a total of $50. The majority of my maternity clothes were shared between myself and my cousins, so that truly saves us all money! Others were gifts from my mother. And I actually wore a lot of non-maternity clothes throughout the entire pregnancy. Maxi dresses worked out great (some I couldn't continue to wear due to my breasts getting too big, but the majority worked), and empire waist dresses or shirts were great.

I'm going to have to buy used, because I was looking at some maternity clothes on Amazon yesterday and they can get really pricey! I mean, I guess they will be worth it since I plan on having several kids and therefore will spend two or three years pregnant and in those clothes, but still.

So far.... about $45-50? I have:

-2 pair of secret belly maternity pants from Motherhood (bought used for $4/pair)
-1 pair of underbelly jeans from Old Navy (also $4)
-2 t-shirts from Target (on sale, I think about $15 for both)
-2 black dresses (1 was free, the other I bought for about $15)
-1 long-sleeved shirt (also on sale, I think about $10)

The rest of what I have been wearing it still my regular clothes. I have a friend who just got out of her maternity clothes giving me a skirt and a few shirts and I know my mom has bought me a couple long-sleeved t-shirts, which I will pick up when I go home next month. I will buy a few more shirts and sweaters probably, but not much. I don't want to spend a bunch of money on it.

I didn't buy too much, I think all in I spent somewhere between $400-500. I was able to wear jeans to work, so I got:
2 pairs jeans from Gap
1 denim skirt from Gap
1 sweater from Motherhood, in hindsight, I didn't wear this too much
3 long sleeved striped tops from Motherhood and Gap
1 pair leggings, which made me look ridiculous, so I didn't wear these
3 dresses from Gap, Motherhood and H&M
1 short sleeved tee from Gap
2 Bella bands that I didn't really use either
3 pairs shorts from Gap and a random store that wasn't maternity but they had a stretchy waist

I didn't care that I basically wore the same things over and over again. It made it much easier to get rid of them. I also wore several JCrew jersey maxi dresses. Got them on super sale, and with a cute cardi they made me feel dressed. I really didn't like the options for maternity tops (I prefer something that fits closer to the body rather than those tent shirts with the bows on the sleeves).

I've been lucky so far. First of all, I own lots of flowy tops. Second of all, I'm 19 weeks, and still mostly wearing pre-pregnancy pants w/ the bella band. It's not the most comfortable thing in the world, but I still don't fill out my maternity pants, so they look kind of saggy. Also, my grandma bought me all of my maternity basics this summer -- 2 pairs of work pants, a pair of nice jeans, and 2 skirts. I'm hoping I can get through most of my pregnancy with the clothes I have right now, and in that case I'll get away w/ spending $0. I did notice that Target had some really cute cheap maternity clothes though...

I haven't paid full price for anything and its been around $100 and I bought everything big so it'll last me through the pregnancy, I might need 1 or 2 more long sleeve shirts to get through the colder months!

But, I can survive with two pairs of pants and a pair of leggings as long as I have an assortment of tops, lol.

I probably spent upwards of $500. I wore normal clothes with belly bands all the way until like 7-8 months but then needed tops and a few pairs of pants. I had some pants from H&M, but I ordered a ton from asos.com and from gilt. I had A pair of Seven jeans, but it was so damn hot i didnt wear them a ton. But I live right next to Rosie Pope Maternity, so I had a lot of stuff from there, which wasn't cheap.

I need to hit the thrift store, because I've already spent a hundred dollars, and I hardly have anything!

I didn't really spend much... say about 200 and actually that was a gift from my parents. Majority were pants... shirts you could go with regular (its cheaper and still does the job)

I'm not positive of my grand total, I'd have to think about it, but I'm pretty sure it's been about $200 since I bought most used online from kijiji.

So, how much did you spend? Did you need to buy a completely new wardrobe or could you make do with what you had? Did you need to buy different clothing specifically for work?

It's freezing in Boston so won't be able to wear cute summer non-maternity dresses. It's sweaters and pants. Unfortunately my style pre-pregnancy was not long flowy tops and long sweaters and most of my friends who have been pregnant are bigger than me = no borrowing. I feel like I'm going to spend *too* much.
