But it will be at a much much higher premium. If you want coverage for a longer period you are better off looking into a whole life policy. (i.e. by the time the policy runs out hopefully your children will be grown and supporting themselves, and your spouse will be covered by retirement savings). Whole life is guaranteed money as long as premiums are paid at the death of the policy holder. Term life is guaranteed money for the death of the policy holder throughout the specified time (works like car insurance?) and that it is used mostly to cover costs like mortgages, etc. in the event of an unexpected death.
