My copay was $100, my out of pocket max (which doesn't include copay) was $600, and since our pediatrician didn't go to our hospital we had to pay an out of network deductible of $161 for her to be discharged.

We have a $1k deductible and then $3k max out of pocket, so we paid right around $3k for the delivery, including my doctor costs, epidural, and hospital expenses.

On the upside, my knee surgery later that year was completely free, since we met all the deductibles ... joy

We have Tricare and our yearly OOP is 3k -I had already paid for other doctor visits for the kids and then I paid my OB $500 and so I think my C/S ended up costing around $2200. Not bad considering the total bill was $25K!

@mrs. wagon: HMO for four of us is a $1,300/month premium. My employer {state education} covers $750/month. It's steep, but it's very good insurance.

I paid $25 for my first OB visit and that was it for the whole pregnancy. My job had great health insurance. Now that I'm a SAHM, any future pregnancies will be covered by my husband's plan which is not as good. Oh well, at least #1 was free :)

Seriously what insurance do you all have?! We are both self-employed and pay $8k a year in premiums alone (that number is going up next month thanks to Obamacare), and we still ended up paying around $8k out of pocket for prenatal and labor and delivery- for a vaginal, uncomplicated birth. Makes me wonder what our premiums are paying for. Sucks we're about to do that again.

I was single when I got pregnant, then married and broke halfway through pregnancy. So, we were on state healthcare. It covered everything.

Health insurance baffles me. I do not understand why insurance is so expensive and yet people are still expected to pay THOUSANDS of dollars out of pocket. We teeter on the edge of eligibility for low cost care, but we would drown if we had to pay full premiums.

@locavore_mama: I didn't pay zero, but I only paid $150 total on the federal goverment's blue cross blue shield basic plan. It covered 100% of prenatal coverage including all my high risk appointments and ultrasounds and then it was $150 for delivery and hospital stay. We did have to pay more for the boys' time in the NICU, but if they had come home when I did it would have just been $150 total.

@Vegmama: No deal because none of her clients are able to get insurance to cover their births. But when you ask what she charges, she says she does it as a ministry and will take whatever a family can afford to give her, although $1,000 is what she suggests. But we knew what other people pay her and that this is what she does for a living, so we paid about the median amount in the range that others seem to pay. Yeah, she's a lay midwife and the best we can do in our state that is backwards in all manner of alternative health care.

@FarmWifeGina: That's a REALLY good cost from your midwife. Our midwife is about $4,500, but insurance pays for 70% ... Did your midwife do a 'deal' because you were paying 100%?

I spent about $2000 for the maternity coverage over 12 months , and then my deductible of $2500. If I hadn't had to have a c-section, it would have been much less because I wouldn't have had to touch my deductible. And then I had a $50 copay for every ultrasound (3) and another $150 for the room. So right around $4800?

@mrs. wagon: Yes, I think it just depends on how much of teh premium the employer is willing to cover. For example, my employer covers the full cost of the premium for my PPO which was around $2000 per month for the 2012-2013 year although I have no idea what it is at the moment.

We were on an HMO plan and I paid $10/appointment for prenatal care and 3wk and 6wk pp checkups and $0 for LDR. $10 I think for zofran (generic.) $50 or $75 for ER visit for PPD, $10 for follow up, $70 total for meds. I don't know if that stuff counts, but it was necessary for me..

Eta however I did not get to go to the hospital or dr I wanted...and all the stuff that goes with hmos.
