@MrsH: With my last my husband had a broken leg and couldn't stay with me regardless of the kid situation. It was only difficult the first night, and even then I just did the best I could. The hardest part was getting the baby out of the bassinet, but I did it! I had a c-section at noon, so hopefully you're c-section is nice and early!

After my c-section with my first son, the hospital staff was pretty helpful. I think they did a lot, because my husband was a new dad and he really didn't know what he was doing. They showed him how to swaddle, bathe and change the baby, and the nurses still ended up doing a lot of the work even after showing him. I didn't do anything, because I literally couldn't move without being in severe pain for at least two days.

@MrsH: With LO#1, they did everything until I was up and about enough to do it - like i would ring the bell in the night and they would change her and hand her to me. With LO#2 I had a vbac and was actually in worse shape than the c-section (so that's not a surefire solution in any event, lol) and they were even more attentive I think because they felt sorry for me. And this was a Canadian hospital, so they are generally less attentive. I think if you just ask for what you need them to do, you will get it!

@MrsH: gotcha! I'm not gonna lie, we don't do a ton of helping where I work but it all depends on how long they keep you in bed etc...

@MamaG: Yeah, I know he'll stay for the first 24 hours because our hospital has the same rules, so worried about the next overnight though.

My DH stayed with me night one. I wasn't allowed to be left alone with baby for 24 hours because of anesthesia. They told me baby would be required to be in the nursery overnight if DH wasn't here.

Night two I was alone, and I won't deny it was challenging. I'm not sure he would have made it a ton better, it was really a nursing issue. In tears I asked to supplement. And the only way she'd sleep was on me. I was terrified all night of dropping her or covering her up. In hindsight, I probably should have sent her to the nursery.

My day nurse was AMAZING! She did so much of the baby care. Everytime she came in she asked if she could diaper the baby and I said YES! I was much more willing to accept help the second time.

My DH stayed with me, but I was lucky to not be in much pain so I was able to do a lot myself. The staff didn't help AT ALL. Not a single time did a nurse bring me my baby or anything. All the did was check my incision, check on my bleeding and vitals and weigh the baby at regular intervals/bug us with all the testing they do (blood work for me and baby, hearing test for baby etc...). Although like you, it may have been much different if my husband wasn't staying with me.

@LuLu Mom: OMG I completely forgot about the catheter. Aside from the searing belly pain that was the worst part.

This is the reason I had DH stay with me even with DD2, I didn't want to rely on the hospital staff. I bounced back pretty quick, but the first night there is no way I could have gotten her out of the bassinet by myself, I still had catheter in. I think by night 2 I would have been fine if he went home (he did go home during the day to clean up shower, ect, but our DD stayed with my mom and dad and they brought her up so we could spend time with her.

Same as @Mrs. Train: my Dh went home to be with DD1, so I was alone with DD2 at the hospital. I enjoyed the quiet time and bonding! I sent her to the nursery and the nurses brought her back to me at night to nurse. Otherwise, I could get out of bed to change her diaper, feed her, etc on my own.

With my daughter my husband went home in the evenings to be with our boys. I just kept the bassinet right next to me and I was able to do everything on the bed. I could pick her up and change her on the bed. I could Feed her and put her back down. The nurses would come in to check but we were fine most of the time. If you need them though they will come and help.

Following this as well. DS was in the NICU for the first two days we were in the hospital, so I relied on the staff heavily for obvious reasons. This time around, I'm having a scheduled C-section and hope this LO doesn't end up in the NICU. While we have some help at home, I want LO#1 to know he isn't being abandoned, and I want DH to help as much as possible at home too.

For DD1, DH stayed every night I was in the hospital. He literally did everything because I had such a hard time getting out of bed with my C-section. He'd change her, swaddle her, bring her to me so I could feed her, burp her, get her back to sleep, etc.

For DD2 I have the feeling he isn't going to be able to do that because DD1 will likely need him at home.

I'm sure the nurses would help with the baby but I'm not sure how much they help C-section mommas (I know I'm not their only patient  ).

Any experience? How much did you rely on hospital staff? tips?
