My parents couldn't help me much. So I have a lot in student loans. I probably could have worked harder in high school to get scholarships. Oops, didn't happen. :/

I do wish I didn't have all this student loan debt. Oh, well. Life's not perfect. I do get jealous when I hear someone has no student loan debt.

I don't want my kids to expect college be paid for. I think a system that pays them for good grades. If they get an A in a course, we'll pay 100%... B- 75%, C-50% I want them to take college seriously.

I went to a public high school and my college tuition ran between 10-15K/year, including room and board and all that jazz. My first year was free, all scholarships and grant money. All in all, it was a total cost of about 50K. I'm now an engineer, so it was money well spent. As I said in another thread, it's a solid return on investment.

I'm slightly concerned about paying for education, but not really. I know that once the house is paid off, we can live off one salary, sock away the other one entirely, and pay for it. We do have differing opinions on what to pay for and if we should, and how much. And I know my parents are big on education and are comfortable. They're definitely the kinds to send our kids some supplemental income.

@Mrs. Jacks: I would love to work at a university, for many reasons, but one of them would definitely be the tuition benefit!

I've said this before, but I worked 40 hr/wk through college and had copious grants and loans at State Universities. Because I went to undergrad, post-bacc, grad school and med school, I still owed over $150K. I have it *almost* all paid off, but since it was practically free money (extremely low interest rate), I'm not rushing to pay that debt down faster than other debt I have.

Working at the local university, I get an education benefit for my children. They pay 50% tuition. So I'm going to require that my girls either get full scholarship to the school of their choice or to go to the University I work at. (It was rated at one of the top 10 University bargains in the country). For grad school they can go where ever they want, but undergrad they can do at the U!

I believe my parents paid something similar to yours Mr. Bee, around $100K for me. Also they paid $100k for my little brother, and probably $15k for my older brother, who dropped out.

They sent us to schools out of state because they thought they were better. I think it was a great investment, and I hope to do the same for my kids. It does scare me though! That's a lot of money!

I went to university in Ontario as well and it was around $5000 /yr for tuition. I lived off campus so living expenses were probably around $5000/yr as well. My parents helped me out the first year and after that I made enough as a co-op student to pay for subsequent years (tho I did live at home during my co-op jobs). Ultimately I graduated with no loans and I paid my parents back after I graduated! I guess the entire experience cost $40k. It was well worth it because I got a ton of experience as a student and secured a great job before grauduation.

I'd like to be able to send our kids to a private university without them taking on any loans. But I think I would probably only pay for certain schools or degrees tho.

I dont know about HS, but I went to Syracuse University, which is private (so no in-state tuition) and it was about $52,000 a year to attend. So all in, $258,000. I had scholarships, but didnt get out totally debt free. My dad paid most of it, but I had some.

Im totally afraid of what it will cost to send my kids to college because we want to pay for it

HS was public, College was public but out of state to the tune of $24k / year which my parents covered (thanks Mom & Dad!), Grad school was private ivy league and I graduated in two years with a $120k loan which thanks to my awesome DH we paid off in just two years.

Fortunately tuition isn't too bad in Ontario and FIL has a trust in place for our kids' educations.

I went to a public school and a public university but I never knew how much it cost...probably around the same amount as @Mrs Green Grass. My parents covered the tuition and I paid for rent, food and books. They would help me out if I was short on funds but that didn't happen a lot.

College was over $40,000/year. It was totally insane. I got about $10K in college-awarded grants each year, some scholarships the first year, and walked away with around $15K in student loans. Otherwise my parents funded the rest and I have NO CLUE how.

As for paying for LO's college, we're going to start a 529 when he's born and go from there.

I went to public school (URI) for undergrad and grad. I have about 45,000 in federal student loans. My dad did what he could to help out, but I never expected him to pay for my education.

If we happen to have the money we will help LOs out with school, but I also think it's a good responsibility to have to pay for school yourself. Yes, the debt sucks (especially since I entirely regret BOTH my degrees!) but it's part of life. And not to sound selfish, but we need to save for retirement before LOs college..there are loans available for school, but not retirement.

I went to a privte college for undergrad; it was over 20 k a year, so I would guess my degree cost around 90k total. Luckily I was able to get a lot of scholarships and I worked full time (or more) the whole time, so I was able to graduate without any loans.

Grad will cost about 40k total for an out of state university and I'm lucky enough to pay for that out of pocket.

I went to a private university, it cost around $100k. I came out with $17,000 in loans that I paid off myself in about 5 years. I also went to grad school that cost about $65k, but most of that cost was covered by my employer at the time.

Same education at my university now costs about $250k, and to be honest, I am not sure it is worth it. When the time comes, my son will likely go to the ETH in Zurich. He's a Swiss citizen so it will cost something like $1200 per semester. It's the same university that Albert Einstein attended, so it's decent and known.

I admire your drive and determination to put yourself through all that schooling! You rock!

Went to public school for HS, a state university for college, and a private university for my masters. All paid for by my parents. I feel very fortunate and lucky I never had any financial worries and will forever be indebted to them for this. And now I'm a SAHM. LOL! I did work for many years prior to having kids and I do plan on going back to work when my second one starts kinder though. So hopefully my degrees won't be a complete waste of time and money!

I went to public school from pre-K all the way through high school that was free... and then community college for 4 years (haha, I was a slacker) @ $11/unit and $18/unit, then college for 2 years at around $3k/semester, then my teaching credential for about $5k. So around $15k total? My dad paid for all of my college expenses, though, so I didn't have to pay a dime.

We'll set some money aside for our kid(s), but not enough for anything other than 4 years at a state school (if that).

I did my undergrad in Nova Scotia, where I think that our tuition was about 6k/year. I then did my masters in the UK, and thankfully it was a 1 year program, because my tuition was 22k as an international student. Ouch!
My parents generously paid for everything. We started RESPs for both our girls as soon as their were born (something like your 529 thingies), and contribute every month to it. I do not expect that it will fully cover their costs, but I hope that we can make up the difference. Education is insanely expensive.

We are very grateful that the organization we work for will cover 90% of tuition for all of our children through four years of school, and will also help out with up to 50% of our tuition if we decide to go back to graduate school.
We plan to be with this organization for the rest of our careers.

My parents worked for the same organization, so my college was also covered between that and my parents. I did have to pay for room and board, books, etc, but I worked to cover that. I came out with no debt. I was very lucky.

@MamaMoose: oh my gosh! what an amazing opportunity. I cannot believe your parents could afford that! Crazy!!!

homeschooled up to college - so technically my parents did shell out some $$ for my education, the state didn't help at all. They bought all the curriculum and textbooks every year, paid for every field trip etc. Invested TONS of time. I couldn't even guess at what they spent. But they were frugal too.

I paid for my own college, and probably spent about $5,000 total. It was my local comm. college, and I got the first year free.

My tuition was covered in full for four years by a program my grandmother signed me up for when I was 8 years old.

However, I worked part-time for spending money. As for room and board, I know exactly what that cost me: $25k since that is how much my loans were when I graduated. Yeah, that doesn't include tuition. Horrible decision making on my part. Not proud of it.

I went through the college fund my parents had for me in one year at a private college. I worked full time and went to school full time at a public university for the remainder of undergrad, and came out with basically no debt (under 5k). Law school though....well, I have plenty of loans!

LO already has about 10k for college; which should buy her about a week!

I went to a private college so it was in the 100K range I think. I'm incredibly lucky that my parents paid that and my room and board, so I came out with zero debt, which I will always be thankful for (and tell them that frequently). DH's parents did the same and we plan to for our kids, but I can't imagine what college will cost then. We will start college savings plans immediately when they are born. We joke that they are getting athletic scholarships (the joke being that I dont have an athletic bone in my body).

I did my undergrad in Ontario where fortunately tuition isn't anywhere near as expensive as it is here in the states, I wanna say at the time it was only $4-5k? With some savings from parents and working all through high school where I had to save half my paycheck I got through it board included debt-free.

Grad school on the other hand I attended in the US at a state school and at the time had to pay international tuition, I think it was about 15k/year.

ETA: and yes I absolutely worry about paying for our LOs' tuition. Unless they're geniuses or great athletes, I think they'll be state school bound hah.

@mrbee: haha I don't know about that. But my parents often tell my brother and me how proud they are of us and that they are extremely happy with the "return on their investment" so that makes me feel pretty great.

I went to public school til college, and then that was 40k a year. Grad school was 35k/year for 2 years, but I took out loans for that. My parents paid for most of my college education and I hope to do the same for my kids. Right now, we're in a very stable financial position and could afford it, but who knows what college costs will be in 18 years (times 3 for the 3 kids we want!). We'll do the best we can to pay for college, and if we can't, hopefully they'll get scholarships. I think it's important for kids to not take on the financial burden of loans, etc if it's not necessary, especially since a lot of the times there's not an understanding of what taking out loans entails.
