We had the harmony test done. The reason we chose that one is because they told us if we paid direct to them and did not go through insurance, they would charge us $200. Well for some reason, they did go through our insurance (even though they assured me they wouldn't). I got a EOB that said they charged our insurance around $2500 and since it wasn't covered we would be responsible for the entire amount. But they also included a check for $600ish to us. Perhaps that was their discounted rate? Not sure why it was sent directly to us. But I called harmony and they just said to pay the amount our insurance gave us and they would bill us for the remaining amount down the line. Well we never received a bill and it's been over a year since we had the test done! So I paid $0!

$25 because they were running a special. But they sent us a bill for $3,000, then when DH called tried to convince us to pay "just" $100. But magically as soon as he insisted on speaking to a supervisor they honored the original agreed price. Medical billing can be such a scam sometimes!

I went through a company called Recombine which charges $95 or $120 depending on which test you get if (a) you have insurance, AND (b) your insurance doesn't cover the cost of the test. If you just plain don't have insurance, the test costs $1,080.00. I do not know how much it cost if you go through your insurance.

@Pirouette: @winniebee: Good grief! As time passes, these things should get cheaper. There aren't additional R&D expenses to cover. Clearly it has changed in two years (oh how quickly the medical world moves!) because previously Panorama only had one lab and it was in California and other labs couldn't perform the analysis.

@MamaG: my tests were processed by bioreference labs, so the # on the bill is for their billing dept. I'm just not sure if it's a waste of time to call them and I should just call panorama directly, or if panorama is going to say "you need to call the lab." The bill was $1370, and it looks like my insurance already picked up $2100! My doctor basically guaranteed it would be in the $130 range, but the bill is 10x that, because I have insurance? GRRR!

We paid $130 for Harmony because it was cheaper than if our insurance had been billed (as with others). And I'm a carrier for an "incompatible with life" genetic disease, so all other testing has been covered no problem (multiple CVS and amino tests).

@Pirouette: I called Panorama in California directly. It should be the number on the bill. The blood draw was done by my OB (she has an in house phlebotomist) and sent off to their labs. I'm betting your bill is about $2400. When I called them, I just started explaining my situation and the person immediately offered to reduce the bill to $200 (I think, it's been about 2 years my memory is crap, but it was no more than $200 ). I gladly took the offer.

Also for anyone following along or finding this later, Panorama is the most costly of all the tests and they all do the same thing. It's just different labs that are processing the blood. I can't explain why Panorama is so much more expensive, but if you can pick a cheaper option, do it.

With this pregnancy, the genetic counselor encouraged me to get the Materniti21 test over other tests because my insurance did not cover it - so it would only cost $200 max. What was weird is that when I got the EOB documenting the test would not be covered - I let the lab group know - they said they'd send me a new bill but never did - it's been 5 months now.

I had the Counsyl blood test done (I think it's a different type of blood test than Maternity21) and I got a bill for $1200 because my insurance company decided it wasn't medically necessary for me (even though one of the things they are testing for is cystic fibrosis which is pretty standard!). I was able to contact Counsyl and get the bill reduced to $99. It's bizarre how healthcare billing works.

It should have been $200 because I'm not AMA but we never got a bill. I presume that was because the test picked up a potential abnormality which would make them treat it as medically necessary and my insurance covered it? IDK for sure, I wasn't about to call any companies asking them to charge me!

Did you get an EOB or a bill? I would try to contact your health insurance company and see if they can explain it to you. There are many times when they process claims wrong.
