When I lived in LA, it ranged from $25/hr on up. In San Diego and where I now live in Atl, it ranges between $15-20/hr.

@sorrycharlie: I'm super close with the families I've worked for too and that does count for a lot : ) my last job I didn't get a raise the 4 years I was there, but I got more time off (I had 6 weeks paid off the last year I was with them, 2 of my choice & 4 of their own) & the oldest was at school all day at that point so it was less work for me. It didn't bother me that I wasn't getting a 'raise' because paid time off is just as good!

@mrs. bird: well they are *super* flexible with scheduling and have given us tons in the way of christmas/birthday gifts, they came to our wedding, baby shower etc. lol.

but as far as like, bonuses or anything like that, nope! I'm sure she'll let me bring LO when she's here, but I'll probably play that by ear...& it's under the table, so it's ~$17/18 hour for a "official" job that would then deduct taxes and benefits, so that makes me feel a little better, lol.

the other thing is that I started $12/hour when the 4 y/o was only 7 weeks, and I was only 20 and halfway through undergrad. So I think they started me pretty high! It just hasn't gone up since then, but it's such a relaxed environment I'm okay with it :)

$10 a kid here in MI but our economy is in the crapper so I figure that # is higher elsewhere. I watched 3 kids (1 of whom was in school most the day) for $20/hour and they paid me for a 40h week even if some weeks I only worked 36h or so....because I was contracted at full time status.

y'all do well! it's very common in my area for nannies to get less than minimum wage. i'd say $5-$6 per child per hour is normal. that would be for the average sahm who is watching other's children in her home. i guess if you went the careered nanny route, it would probably cost you more, but i have no idea since there aren't many in my suburban area.

Not sure. We're looking into hiring a part time helper/housekeeper/nanny/someone to help with food when baby 2 arrives. Will probably pay them between 15-17 depending on experience.

@Coco Bee: I agree. I have a degree, I speak English as a first language, and I have 7 years of child-care experience. I won't work for less than $10/hr for one child. You definitely get what you pay for. I personally want to work for families that value me as a nanny, and $5/hr does not say that to me.

@allison: I loved working overnights! My rate went down, but $10 an hour while I slept was an awesome way to wake up to an extra $100! Not so much when I did overnights for twins, because they didn't sleep through the night yet, but I made more for them ($23/hr if I remember correctly), that was HARD though!

@allison: it's hard because I understand they're trying to make a living and need cheap childcare... but we need to make a living too!! There is NO way I'd accept a job paying less than $10/hr and for my amount of exp. that is cheap - even with me bringing my son along!

I think you get what you pay for. If you are going to pay $4-$5 an hour, you'll soon find out what that gets you!

I've been a nanny for the past 5 years, in different areas. In Denver, I made $12/hr for one child & $15/hr for two (salaried), plus 1 week paid vacation and 2 sick days. In Eastern TN, I made $12/hr for one infant, but no salary, no sick days, no vacation. Here in Western NC, I'm making $10/hr for part-time, but the parents agreed to a guaranteed number of hours a week. I had a problem with my last job where the mom would come home early a lot or call me the morning of and tell me not to come in. Which would have been fine, but I only got paid for the hours I worked, so some weeks were really low-pay. I've seen jobs listed on Care.com in my area now that are offering like $5/hr for 3 kids while the mom works a 2nd/3rd shift -- so overnight! No way.

yeah I know I'm glad I wasn't the only one that balked at that :-/ I have been a nanny for 7 years and a babysitter for 12 years. One family that wanted to hire me offered me $8/hr for two kids. I honestly was a little offended but I couldn't bring myself to tell her that.

@Coco Bee: omg! $35 a day?! Maybe she's leaving her LO to work a minimum wage job but that is super low! I saw an ad for 3 kids, $5 an hour...umm...that's nothing.

A friend of mine has been a nanny for 7 years--she makes $27 an hour. Normal rate for a lot of experience would be $20 in my area I think. If I were to get a nanny for 2 children, I wouldn't pay less than $20 for someone with a lot of experience and I would prefer a mom to watch my kiddos. I wouldn't mind the nanny to bring along their child as long as they pay equal attention to all kids and there would have to be room in their car for 3 car seats too.

ETA: $20 an hour I mean, not $20 a day!

The agency I used to work for hired out nannies at $15-17/hr starting and if you were full-time, you could work out a weekly rate with the family (Normally between $300 and $600/week). The full-time, live-in girls were salaried by the families.

@MamaMoose: Oh I wasn't suggesting you would be like that family... but just be careful and make sure the nanny knows you plan to follow through.

If I ever were to do a FT nanny gig again, I would demand a written "contract" so that we have all of the expectations of both parties in writing. I was sorely taken advantage of and even though I am still friends with the family, it's kind of the elephant in the room.

Our nanny's rate is $12-$15 an hour. We are paying her a weekly rate that breaks down to $13.33 an hour. Before we found her we heard from other nannies who ranged from $10-$25 an hour. We are only using her for 3 months because we can't afford a nanny long-term. LO starts daycare in January. We are in Brooklyn.

I should also add.. at least from families I know, they're willing to pay more $ per hour if the nanny has a degree, speaks more than one language, etc. not necessarily due to experience/length of time. Not that I think that is good or bad, but definitely apparent by reading 'wanted's on care.com :)

It definitely depends on your geographic area. I've always lived in the Midwest and I'd say $10 an hour would be fair/good for a weekly scenario. For one-time or irregular it's around 12-15.

@Coco Bee: We'll only be using our nanny for a few month before starting day care and will be upfront about what the hours would be and what the weekly rate will be. Anything over those hours (we work late or go in a date night) would be paid on an hourly rate. So it will be up to the nanny to decide if the weekly rate is worth the time to her. I certainly wouldn't expect a salaried nanny to just work whatever arbitrary amount of hours we decided we needed her to in a week.

ETA: I just did the math and the weekly rate we will pay / the hours we need works out to about $10 per hour which sounds about right for our area.
