I probably spent about $200 on food for both of my lo's birthday parties for about 25 to 30 people but I did the vast majority of the cooking myself. Easily another $200-$250 on decorations, plates etc, activities and goody bags.

@Boogs: For LOs 3rd birthday we spent about $500 for up to 25 kids and their parents. it was at a party place that handles everything but we chose to bring in additional food for parents, and extra favors, and decorations.

I think we usually pay around $500 once you factor in food, decorations, venue costs and favors for the kids. I think we typically have between 25 and 30 people including kids at the parties.

@agold: Haha! I know, entertainment prices can be crazy. Usually a good bounce house goes a long way with our crowd.

@Boogs: Food is just about the number one priority all day every day at my house! :silly: But with kids, now we have to think about entertainment! I don't think kids find juice as entertaining as adults find wine and bourbon!

@agold: It's a lot, but you get used to it. ;)

@looch: I think it should be, but DH wants people to have a full meal because that's what our families have always done.

For a get together of about 10 adults, we could spend around $250. We usually do these in the summer, and we get carne asada and such from a local carniceria. If we happen to have people over in the winter, then I usually make food and spend around the same amount. We supply a good amount of alcohol, but our friends always bring some with them and will usually offer to bring a side of something. If its a party with decorations and such, it gets so expensive.

I've been thinking about my baby's first birthday. I was first thinking about just the adults, but what about the older siblings (like age 5 and such!). Oh my gosh. Entertaining several generations sounds daunting!

@Boogs: I have never hired a caterer, so I wouldn't even have a clue what one would cost...a lot of people where I live will order a few trays of something from a restaurant, I think that would be more cost effective...if you're looking for it to be, lol.

I think there's just some things that people spend more on. I don't happen to prioritize spending my money on food, but plenty of people do.

@looch: Yup. We are looking at a caterer right now that would cost about $500, but it includes a full meal, sides and all, plus plates, silverware, and napkins. But we also feed 50-60 people and stay with leftovers.

We have thrown birthday parties at home for 40-50 people for $250 in food (full catered lunch from a local chinese restaurant!).

For a party held at a venue, I've found that the venue charges are between $300-500. Since the parties are shorter and more activity centered (and usually have a max guest count of 20-30), we end up spending less for food. For my daughter's 4th birthday, we probably spent around $75 on snacks and cake for 35 people.

@Boogs: for a kid? I've spent up to $500 for a venue party. And that included just pizza.

What kind of parties? I can host a dinner party for another couple and by the time it's said and done, we've spent $150-$200 easily on a really nice bottle of wine, an aperitif, a nice cut of meat, ingredients, dessert, etc.

I can also throw a mean barbecue for $50 for 10 people.

Maybe around $150-$200 for ~20 people. That's stuff like themed paper plates, cups, napkins and then food. Pretty much all the money is food.

I feel like our kids birthday parties usually cost a lot, while DH thinks it's normal when you have a lot of guests.

Do you usually give yourself a budget for parties you throw? If you don't mind sharing, how much do your parties usually cost and how many guests does that include?
