I wouldn't be able to name LO something one of us hated, but I could see doing a hard sell for a name that DH was indifferent to. Honestly, we couldn't find a name we both loved so we compromised on something we both liked. Now we couldn't imagine him being called anything else!

I voted that DH lobbied even though I disliked the name but actually I liked the name but hated the fact that a detested coworker used it as his English name. I was hoping to find something less popular too but that wasn't a major issue. He figured that since I did like the name that I would just get over the name association.
I also don't know how DH feels about DS's middle name. My step dad had recently passed so I wanted to use his name as middle name. DH never questioned it, probably so he'd get his way on the first name!
This time around I hope we both love the name we choose. So far we haven't really discussed it yet.

I lobbied for a name he didn't like and I guess I was hoping it would grow on him. We went with a name we both loved in the end, which ironically, I vetoed when I first heard it.

We started out wanting to find a name that we both loved, but there just wasn't much overlap. So we changed to absolute veto power, and ended up with a name that he loves, and I didn't mind enough to veto. But he vetoed my entire top 40 list except for the name LO ended up with, so I think maybe he was a little more heavy handed with the veto.

The name we chose, we both liked, and thought the other didn't like!

Other names, we were good about not pushing if the other was strongly NO. If it wasn't DH laughing or gagging at it, I would try to push it a little and get a feel. If we have another DD there's a name I'm majorly pushing, and he said no but then liked why I thought of it and is warming to it.

I think, especially guys, sometimes take a first association and then when they have time to warm up, start to like a name they previously didn't. So I'm not against a little pushing!

I would never be ok with picking something DH hated, plus he would be vocal enough about it that it would start to bother me too. I do get frustrated when he vetoes names too quickly though, but I think he just does that because I come out of nowhere asking about names.

We both have to love it in order for it to be a "finalist" (we're TG so we won't have a name chosen until we "meet" the baby).

There's a couple I know who agreed on a boy name that the dad loved/mom hated and a girl name the mom loved/dad hated. They were both willing to be stuck with a baby name they hated just so they could have the name they loved (and their SO hated). It was so so weird to me.

I think its okay to try to convince the other person. Sometimes you are really passionate about a name and its that easy to just let go of it. Especially if it is a name of a loved one

I think both parents have to agree - but I think that about pretty much every decision really. With our baby names, there was a family name for a boy that my husband really liked and I wasn't that jazzed about. It grew on me though, and now I like it. So I think giving it time and serious consideration is a good thing to do with a name that has meaning to another person!

I think both parents have to be happy with the name chosen, but I don't think that means that if your spouse vetoes a name you love that you can't try and show him why you think it's nice and see if maybe he changes his mind. I don't think the discussion has to be over right away.

We both have to be happy with it. I had a name (Norah) that I felt very strongly about and DH vetoed. I was sad, yes, but in the end I wanted him to love his daughters name.

Not gonna lie, if we ever have a boy, he's going to pull for Frank (after his dad). I will absolutely veto it.

We are having a hard time deciding on a name for our second son- right now we have one we both really like. Is it perfect? Not yet, but it's been growing on us. We are still on the lookout for something that fits better, just in case. We'll see where we go from here in the next 6 weeks.

@IRunForFun: lol, your thread was what made me start this one actually! Although it was just the latest of a lot of instances I'd heard of this happening. The name I loved was a family name too, but the idea of my husband not liking the name was just too much for me. Although the relative I wanted to name after was still living. I may have considered a little convincing if he she had passed away.

I do think that (usually) people grow to love whatever they name their kid though. I know my name was a compromise (my parents couldn't decide so they each picked a name and then put them in the order that sounded best, which wound up being my dad's pick for first and mom's pick for middle). But now my mom says she can't imagine it any other way.

I had our DD's named picked out before meeting DH, when we foudn out she was a girl he told me he wasn't sure about it, so even though I loved it we searched for several other options. Every name we came up with he said "he didn't like more than E" so when it was all said in done we used the name I had picked out...and it fits her perfectly, I can't imagine her as the other names on our list!

For me, it depends on whether there's a reason one partner is particularly attached to the name. I stated in a thread earlier that my DH wants to name a son Malcolm even though I don't love that name. However, it's a family name that's *really* important and has a lot of meaning for him, so for that reason, I'm a lot less likely to veto it. If it was just a random name he thought of and liked, I'd probably have more to say about it.

I'm also fairly certain that I will grow to love the name because it will be the name of our son.

We both had full veto power over any name, no questions or arguments allowed*. The only exception was one name (Avery) that I suggested--he asked me to sell it to him, and when I couldn't, he vetoed it.

There are so many names out there that we both loved (especially girl names) that it just didn't make sense to fight over a particular one.

*Except in the case of family names. Our boy would, no matter what, have Evans in his name--he's the fourth generation to have it in his name. We liked it better as a first name, minus the S. If we'd had a girl, it was super important for her to have Grace in her name, even if I wasn't super in love with it.

We both have to love the name. Luckily, for this LO, I had a name I have been wanting to use for a long time, and when I told him, he said it was great, so it was easy. The middle name was a little trickier, but we ended up picking a name that we both loved for different reasons, but didn't think the other would go along with it, lol.

DH very rarely vetoes a name. DDs name was easy for us and agreed right away. DS who will be born in late may is more of a struggle, however DH only vetoes a name if it reminds him of someone he isn't very fond of. He is very nice in letting me basically pick the name since I go through pregnancy and delivery. If he hated it, it would be a no go. The only thing he wants is the middle name to be after his father, which I'm good with.

Good question. I don't mind if some of my names are vetoed as long as they were considered and the alternative boy name wasn't always my husband's first name. I want us to both like it and be excited about. The back story shouldn't be he/she twisted my arm. I already know I will likely not get to use my favorite name choices.

When I first came upon LOs name and mentioned it to DH he was like, "no". He didn't even think about it. When I mentioned the meaning behind it and its significance for our relationship, he was like "oh, okay. No." Lol. I casually brought it up once every few weeks and he kept warming up to it. When we had our daughter, we had three possible names, including the one I "convinced" him of. After looking at her and marvelling over her, we both looked at each other and said, "yeah, A is her name."

Both of us have to love it. But some names she loved that I initially vetoed have grown on me even though she wasn't actively petitioning to change my opinion. Some things are just a matter of exposure and openness. If one of us hates something for a reason no way.

We both had to love the name...that being said, DH didn't think R's name was a good idea but I kept it on my list and eventually he grew to love it. He ended up convincing me in the hospital that her name was her name.
