I shop sales mostly unless it is something that I really think she needs then or is for an upcoming event!

She also has hand me downs and second hand clothes!

If it is cute why not?!

I think I've only bought one new piece of clothing for my son, and he's 9 months. Everything has been gifts or second hand. Since we were Team Green, there's lots of gender neutral stuff, even some stuff that leans toward the girly end and I don't mind that. I do tend to toss things that are stained and I try to mend rips. And I try to have things that, mostly, fit, though a bit large or tight is okay. The outfit I put on this morning was a bit small, so it's probably the last time he'll wear it. But I wasn't going to change it, once he was in it.

I care that she's wearing weather appropriate, well-fitting clothes that are unstained (or mostly unstained). When I dress her (or at least offer her clothes to choose from), I try to offer outfits that match and that are cute. I try not to worry about it too much when my DH dresses her in stuff that doesn't match at all, although I admit it does bug me a little if I think about it too much.

Right now, her wardrobe consists of mostly things that I picked out (taking into account what I know she prefers to wear), although when she was younger, up to 75% of her wardrobe would be stuff that people gifted and it would always sort of bother me to put her in clothes that I didn't like. I wish I didn't care so much, but I'm the one who sees her wearing the clothes (most of the gift givers see her once per month at most) so I've stopped dressing her in things that I actively dislike.

@Reese: and he's always the most stylish baby!

for my 4 year old: clothes need to be clean, easily taken down for restroom breaks and comfortable. I'm fine with characters etc. because they make him happy.

for my 1 year old: clothes need to actually fit the child, he's in 2T with no signs of stopping so I haven't been able to use a lot of his brother's hand-me-downs unfortunately

I voted 6. About half of her wardrobe has been gifted by my MIL and not all of it is my exact taste, but practically it doesn't make sense to not have her wear it. When I do shop for LO, I pick things that I think are cute but I still do it on a budget and I go for practical items. I would say every season I let myself get her 3 or 4 impractical cute pieces. Though this summer I went a little nuts with the rompers

I voted 6. DD has a TON of hand me downs but most of them are GREAT clothes (better than what I can buy her!) I never buy her anything full price; but digging for clearance and waiting for big sales online has landed me stuff that I love at really good prices!

I care (and insist!) that he wears clean underwear everyday. :silly:

Seriously--we commit all these sins on a daily basis, except at church, when he picks from a couple of nicer button-downs and pairs of pants I selected for that purpose. Beyond that, he has several pairs of shorts and pants that are frayed/ripping at the hem, and I have been only moderately successful at keeping him from occasionally decorating his clothes with nonwashable markers and pens. I draw the line at food stains--anything I with a food stain I can't remove becomes a rag, but food stains don't happen often. I'm not super neat or fashionable, but things and people under my care are really clean.

I'm really picky about underwear, shoes, and comfort/ease of movement in his clothes, but beyond that I buy him stuff that I like well enough and that is of the style he requests.

I'm picky about what she wears and I never put her in clothes that I dislike, and if there's a stain I can't remove then I throw it in the trash - but, 99% of her clothes are secondhand. So I don't think your options make sense.

I voted 3 but after reading this I might be a 1. Gender - don't care. I dressed DD in boy hand me downs for two years. Size - don't care, unless it interferes with play. Rips - hasn't happened yet. Stains - depends on how much LO likes the outfit vs how obvious the stain is.

If LO likes it she can wear it. Our only rule is no costume/princess gowns outside the house because they are too hard to play in.

I care that they look neat and cute but I don't bother to be trendy. LO2's clothes are almost entirely hand me downs from LO1 and his were hand me downs from many friends. I guess I end up dressing them in "classic" looks like polos and shorts, or the littlest one in rompers and John-John's/bubbles. I like trendier baby looks too but they are harder to find and we generally stick with carters, old navy and gap. I get rid of stained clothes even for play.

My daughter is SO picky right now. She only wants to wear party dresses with leggings (that she rolls up to her knees) every day. I don't fuss so much about stained clothing because she plays out a lot and loves crafts, so always ends up with paint and mud on herself - it bothers me much less if it happens to older clothes.

My boy is in a lot of hand he downs as my nephew is exactly one year older than him and was a similar size.

I don't really know how to vote in this. I only put LO in clothes that are in good condition but whether they are new or used doesn't determine how "nice" they are to me. I'm not overly particular as long as it's good condition, fits, is comfortable, and minimal characters (an animal is ok but no Elmo for example) or overly frilly. Spending money on her clothes is not a priority though and most is hand me downs, gifted by grandma or other family, or second hand. I but some special pieces.

@youboots: it all depends where we are going. If we are going to the grocery store then I dont care as long as its decent and fits. But if we are going to church or a party then I pick out exactly what she wears so it matches

I kinda care a lot lol. I like clothes and shopping for clothes so that extends to my family. I prefer classic looks with some trends mixed in. No stains or tears and I donate or return clothing gifts I don't like. Not everything is expensive necessarily, but for as long as I can manage, it has to match my aesthetic.

As long as it fits (leggings totally turn into capris...right?!) and is unstained, my 4y picks out what she wears. I do request that it be at least relatively seasonally appropriate, and it's not like I buy a lot of crazy stuff for her to choose from...but I swear she comes up with the wackiest combos sometimes! My 18m I can still select for, so she usually looks cute and matches. Most of what I buy for each of them is fairly basic, comfy, mix and match.

My main thing is that I like for her to look like a little girl, not a tiny woman or fashion plate. So as long as it is cute, seasonably appropriate, and comfortable, I don't mind. I don't buy a lot of cheesy sayings and I do limit the character clothes (except underwear because she prefers princess underwear). I also don't let her wear things that are ripped or stained unless it happens while we are out.

@mediagirl: ditto. No rips and stains and I do want them to look cute. My DD is only 2.5 but has been picky since right before her 2nd birthday. My son is 5, so he's also picky now. I let them choose clothes as often as possible so that we don't end up with drawers full of things they refuse to wear. I buy a few nicer brands but all on sale, H&M for fillers or daycare-specific and I'll buy second hand if I find something I like.

As long as it's clean, tidy, fits well and is weather appropriate then my big girl has free range of her wardrobe.

I like DD to be in cute clothes, but I am definitely not against taking hand me downs or shopping consignment. I don't like anything characters, that has sayings on it, animal prints, or tacky-sparkly so I donate anything we are given like that if it's new or used. I try to keep her clothes clean and unripped but she is 2.5 so her stuff isn't in perfect condition. Our biggest problem with clothes is that DD is extremely tall and skinny so her clothes are always a little too short! At least capri pants are stylish hahaha.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I am very particular about making sure LO's outfits match in color /style and are free of stains or rips. But, I'm a fan of hand me downs / buy nothing, and family members gift her tons of new clothing that I generally use regardless of whether it is my taste or not.

I'm not a fan of ripped, stained, worn out clothing. I mostly buy new bc like others have said, I buy new from old navy, gap, etc and secondhand can cost just as much. I don't mind hand me downs if they're in good quality (no matter the brand) but not stains. LO1 is almost 4 and likes whatever I pick out to wear. She dresses herself sometimes and it's usually what I would pick.

No rips, stains, and everything should fit her comfortably. I don't buy used because shopping for sales is so much more convenient. I try to make sure that the right type of clothes is out to match the season (I put away sandals and sleeveless dresses during winter, etc) to avoid struggles. Aside from weather and play appropriate clothing, I pretty much let her be. If it's a special occasion, I do my best to get her to wear what I want, but if she refuses, I don't fight that battle.

As long as it is clean and fits her and is approriate for the weather/activity, I don't really care. Not that I don't care per say, but it's just not a battle that's important enough to fight.
