In NZ we have Kiwisaver which I guess is kind of the same thing. Mine's pretty small even though I've had mine since the fund started because I went back to study. Hubby only started his when we got together (listened to his lovely wife  ) so combined we have less than 20K. Hopefully it grows well over the years!

I've been contributing to for about 12 years and DH for about 6 years and we have a little over 250k in 401k. We typically contribute as close to the max as possible allowed per year.

I checked my account this week and I have $62k in my 401k. Husband has about $75k in his. We both contribute 7.5% and our company matches (we work for the same company). We're both also fully vested, so if we decide to leave we can take it with us. We're both 30 and have been contributing for about 6 years.

I've Had mine for 5 years now (started at age 27?) and I contribute the max I think - it's about 1/6 of my total salary which seems like a lot! But I'll do it as long as I am able. As a teacher, we don't get any matching :(.

We have about 200K in 401k money then we have IRAs on top of that. We've been saving for 6 years.

@Adira: So many people just don't have good examples in their lives who teach them to save for the future. Until I got ahold of my husbands finances he just thought of retirement as "so far away" and therefore not something to worry too much about just yet.

I have just over 30K (saving 6 years at 10%) and DH has just over 40K for 10 years (he was only savnig 5% when we met so I made him up that to 15% to catch up!)

Our thing is DH will take over the family farm once his dad is ready to retire, so even when he's a "retired" man we have income from the arm.

Um, I just started my first job out of law school in January, and so have only had a 401K for 6months! So, ask me in a few years! I do put in 5%, and my employer matches. We are currently saving for our first home, so can't contribute the max right now.

But we have owned 2 homes and put down 20% on our forever home. So there's that. ;)

I have $25k in my 410(k) equivalent account and $5k in an old rollover IRA. I made peanuts at my first job and was out of the workforce for a few years after that while I was in law school, so I've only been able to really start putting money aside over the past 2.5 years (while still dealing with school loans). DH refuses to start a 403(b) because he doesn't like the idea of playing the market. It's a bone of contention between us because even though I kind of agree in principle, his view is totally unrealistic and impractical. He does put plenty of money in savings (well over $100k at this point) but I can't seem to convince him that it's not doing us any favors there. Hopefully I'll make headway at some point sooner rather than later...

I've been saving for two years and it is a fixed percentage, which means I only have about 4K. DH's is pathetic, honestly. His company doesn't contribute anything, and he only puts in like 2%, so he has about 9K for ten flipping years.

We plan to significantly up our contributions starting this fall. I'm glad we have *something	*, because a lot of people do not save for retirement, but at this rate, we will not have nearly enough. I think we are going to start a Roth IRA in the fall since DH's is really doing nothing for us.

@2PeasinaPod: yea for having worked in retirement industry for 5 years, I'm embarrassed I don't have more already! but I used to have co-workers that didnt contribute at all. I don't know how you can be surrounded by the reality of it at work, and not save at all!

I am 32 and have been saving since I was 19 (used to work in CS for a 401k fiduciary), and DH is 33 and has been saving since he was 22, so we're also well over $300K.

@runnerd: It really is scary how few people save for their retirement. I think working for that 401k company really opened my eyes at a young age and I jumped on that as quickly as I could!

@runnerd: it is SO scary how many people are not or do not save for retirement!!

We are both doing well with our retirement savings but we will not feel comfortable until we each have $500k in our separate accounts. Then we'll be able to let out a little breath. Once we both have 1MM in there, that's when we'll feel like we will actually be able to retire someday.
