@looch: well like I said he is only in 1st grade so who knows but in my head I guess I think it will be harder - like right now he does addition in math which is simple and he can do alone but once you get to fractions and word problems I think they need help (I see people asking for math help on FB all the time!) So, I imagine projects would be more complex too!

Only time will tell!

DD1's daycare class last year had monthly "homework" where the parents had to do help the child (2-3 yrs) create a project. It was a lot of fun. I wanted to go all out, but the teacher (gently) reminded us that it was mainly for the kids. You could tell where the parents did everything. But DD1 really enjoyed making it by herself

@Mamaof2: That's actually interesting to me, that you wrote as they get older you will help more, because I am hoping it goes in the other direction, that I will help less.

When I was in elementary school, for example, my parents didn't help at all because i didn't want their help!

@honeybear: I don't have a kindergartener yet, but my FB feed is filled with 100 day activities right now. I've also heard of doing family trees, mobiles of varying topics...things along those lines.

I plan to only assist when asked. I'm teaching my 3-year old that mommy and daddy are happy to help but our help is to be requested politely and not automatic.

Also, as a public children's librarian, my plan is that any assignments I hear about at the last minute will be on them. If they need to go to the library to do research, awesome. If I hear about a big paper the night before it's due, we aren't making an emergency trip. I can't tell you how many reports I wind up helping with at the last minute because the kids never told the parents and my plan is to use that as a teaching lesson to my kids and not bail them out.

I don't remember my parents ever really helping with my homework except showing me how to use the Internet (before Google!) and we had an encyclopedia set at home too.

Growing up, my parents never helped me with my school work other than answering a few questions. If I wanted to know how a word was spelled, I was directed to our dictionary. If I had a school project, I did it all. At the time I was really annoyed by it, but when I got older and especially in college, I understood why they did it this way. I learned to do things for myself and not expect things to be given to me. I plan on doing this for my kids as well. I'll definitely be around to help answer questions but I expect my kids to finish their work themselves. It will probably be difficult for me to not step in but I understand the importance.

So far in K and 1st grade the only projects have been an "All about me" poster and "100 days of school"

Both times I watched DS do them and made suggestions but he did all the drawing, coloring, pasting, etc.

I imagine as he gets older and they get more complex we will help more

@honeybear: DD does 100 days of school in Pre-K and DS does it in public school too! So yes, common here

Yes we can tell. And the kids usually rat you out anyway...even if you tell them to lie.

I like that parents are on hand to assist but I'd much rather see a totally kid project than a parent done one. It's supposed to be for the kid's growth. The parent has already had their chance when they were in school! Plus it encourages dependency and bailouts.

What kinds of projects?

So far in Kindergarten we have done projects that he has selected and projects that I have selected, and in both cases we've done them together. I suppose if someone else assigned them, I'd want to know what degree of parent involvement was allowed/expected. I think that would be a reasonable expectation in a school Kindergarten setting.

@ElbieKay: @avivoca: Is the 100-days of school thing a real (and common) thing?!

I plan to let the kids do most/all the work themselves. It's fine to help but I hate that parents are doing most of the work these days and the children aren't learning anything.

The 100 day shirts/projects really annoy me and I don't have a kindergartner.

@Anagram: I totally agree!!

I'm a middle school teacher and I now have the kids use class time to work on projects, otherwise parents do the entire thing. It's kind of sad.

My dad was way too involved in some of my assignments. For instance he painted a Native American portrait for my report cover. Then strongly suggested that my report become a historical fiction story. My assignment was to pick a Native American tribe write about how they lived and create a 3-D replica of their village. After I turned in my assignment my teacher had a meeting with my dad and I. After she was satisfied I did most (enough) of the work myself she had me read the story aloud to my class.

I plan to help out, but try really hard to make sure the ideas are coming from my LO.

Funny, I just posted the following on another parenting forum I participate in:

See article below about kindergarten mom forced to affix 100 items to a hat. The article complains that this assignment is really for the parents because it's too complicated for the child to complete on his own. So much pointless busywork. What do parents of older kids do when faced with this sort of nonsense? Is this sort of activity really more valuable than weekend family time?
On Wednesday, my son's daycare sent an email asking everyone to send their kid to daycare wearing a football jersey on Friday. Luckily for me, my son doesn't attend daycare on Fridays so it was a non issue. (And anyway, he is still too little to really notice that he doesn't fit in.). But we are not sports people, so my almost 2yo does not own a football jersey. Two days is not enough notice for me to procure one unless I take time off from work. And I have no desire to spend money on a football jersey anyway!
Maybe I am just a Scrooge. There are so many important things to worry about, so when daycare give short notice for something silly, I feel very annoyed.

Once they are officially in school (K and up), I really think the kids should do all of the work themselves, because they are skills they need to be learning. A parent can supervise, and give tips, but I think it's not helping the kids to actually DO some of the work.

However, often times a little art project will be sent home and will say "With your parents, ..... " and then I think the teacher is expecting the parents to do it/help. My 2.5 year old gets that type of homework, and I presume they aren't expecting a 2.5 year old to like, draw and color flags of their parents origins--way too complicated for a 2.5 year old.

I'm bad about doing more than I should. I always make him come up with the ideas, but I usually do a lot of the work. For book reports, he writes them and I revise. For his science fair project, he did the project and I made the board.

Depends what it is. She had to make a book about herself for Mandarin school and she could do that herself. She had to do a science project for pre-K and needed help. I had her come up with the ideas, she did all of the writing that we put up on the board, and colored the pictures. But I helped her lay out the board and with the little experiment that we did. I didn't go all out because I still wanted it to look like she did it.

Do you do all of it, some of it, none of it? Do you give ideas, or let them come up with on their own?

It's something I struggle with, because I love to make stuff and want to go all out, but my son seems to not care and just do the bare minimum. I took a lot of pride in completing my school work myself, so naturally I wish my son would show some interest. I personally think teachers can tell when it's a parent completed project versus a kid completed project.
