I'm a nanny in SC, and I get about $10/hour after taxes. The few times I babysit for other families, I usually get about $10-$15/hour depending on the # of kiddos.

In my neighborhood in LA it's usually $15/hour for one kid. If it's overnight I pay my nanny $100/night in addition to her usual day rate.

I think it really depends on the location. Here in Kansas a lot of college educated professionals don't even make $20 an hour. When I was babysitting in high school and college (not that long ago) I would get anywhere from $5-10 an hour depending on the number of kids in the family. I also think there's a big difference between paying a professional nanny or babysitter and a teenage girl who does it on the weekends.

That's a really good question.
Most of my local friends with kids have family and friends watching the kids, but I think the going rate is the same a minimum wage, about $10 an hour.

$10/hour for during the day. More for late-night or overnight stays (though they've never had an overnight for my sister, I'll usually go home and keep her...she's 7.)

The average around our neighborhood is $10-$15/hour (more for sleep-over jobs) for teens/college-aged babysitters. For nannies or adult baby sitters anywhere from $25+/hour.

Thanks @Mrs. Bee and @nycalimama!

@nycalimama: We live in the burbs so I have driven babysitters home before if they did not have cars. Well, I made my husband do it! :-)

@Andrea: hi, my local neighborhood listserv discusses this topic alot, and the general consensus is $15-$20/hr in NYC. $15/hr while she is sleeping doesn't sound bad at all! Oh and since it's late at night, also cab fare or car service is generally commonly given as well... So if I were you, I'd start at $15/hr. Enjoy :)

When I babysit I usually get between $12-15 an hour. This is generally for me to put the little one to bed and then just stay until the parents get home. I am not sure if it would change if there were multiple kids. Two years ago I used to nanny three children in the afternoons for $10 an hour. Maybe prices went up?

@cyndistar3: $15/day? How is that even possible?

OK, I was planning on paying the sitter $15/hour to just sit there while my daughter sleeps 7 pm - 10 pm while we go out to dinner. Just want to make sure that doesn't sound cheap!

@Red: It really is! But it's sad because she is a really nice lady and a lot of people end up not paying her at all... She is way too trusting for her own good :(

I nanny 10-15 hours/week for my 2 nieces and I get paid $10/hour. If theres 2 kids, I usually ask for $12, but family gets a discount, lol.

I think the going rate here is about $9-12/hr.

holy moly. I was a nanny (paid per hour, but worked up to 40/wk) making $12/hr cash.

originally for one girl (7 weeks old) and eventually, 2.5 years later, her baby sister (Mom went upstairs for a nap the day she came home - first day ever taking care of a brand new baby!) and the rate remained the same.

Wow, $20!

I honestly don't know, I just came on to see what others said. I'm pretty lucky, we live by enough family that we won't have to pay for a baby sitter for a long time, if ever.

At our local library they host a baby sitting course. They teach young adults basic child care along with infant and child CPR. We contacted the teacher and actually were allowed to interview some of the students that were taking the class. We then got to observe them in a setting with multiple children. It was probably the best idea I ever had. We found an amazing sitter, she's 16 and very sweet and charges $9 per hour!!! My bonus son is 4, I'm not sure if I would have left an infant with her right away, but we're pregnant now, and I plan to continue to use her then as well. We have to obviously transport her to and from our home, but my bonus son loves her and the fact that she's taken CPR makes her more knowledgeable than some of our family members!

We pay an insane amount, but that's because we have to also pay insurance...our babysitter is a full time nanny that works for us 4-5 hours a week and 32 hours for another family.

We agreed on a set amount, whether it is during the day or a weekend evening. If we had more children, we would have had to pay more.
