@Anagram: that's so interesting! If our nanny was full time, I'd do a salary, I think. Since she's 30 hours (plus the odd date night) hourly works well, I think. For now!

Sorry, just to go into this further, because I find it fascinating. When the nanny survey came out (and it has over 1000 participants, so I think it's a good sample size), it also showed that nannies tend to get paid a weekly rate rather than an hourly rate, and that the hourly rate when down the more hours a nanny works.

So a nanny working 50 hours a week would make less per hour than a nanny working 15 hours a week.

We pay a weekly rate of about $750. In our particular town, I was super surprised to see what nannies actually go for, because unsuspecting moms post on our local moms group, and 90% nannies answer and inflate the rate a bit. But my town, it's very common to start a nanny at $14-$15 and then give raises if they stay with you a long time.

When I interviewed nannies, I interviewed 3 in a row that had worked for other families in our town that were being paid $15 for 2 kids. All under the table. The last local nanny survey shows that 92% of the nannies in our town are paid under the table.

eta: I live outside NYC. Oh and I should clarify that the $750/ week is for 1 kid 3 days a week, 8-4:30 pm and two kids 2 days a week 7:30-4:30

So yeah, paying $15-$20 an hour -that's like 3k-4k a month YIKES!!!!!!

We have someone for 8-10 hours a week and do 15 for two kids. She set the price and I was grateful. I figure we'll be giving her a raise after the year mark. It feels a bit low as it is and we just love her.

I was a nanny almost 10 years ago in a suburb of Portland. I was paid $12-13 a hour. One child, no additional chores- but he was no longer napping.

NYC. Range for 1 kid is $15-$20/hr.
We started her at $15/hr (actually she quoted that rate to us). At her 1 year anniversary we raised her to $17/hr because we felt she deserved a raise and she was worth more than the minimum to us.

We will probably give her a small bump each year going forward until she hits the highest end of the scale. (But I can't see having her more than two more years anyway).

We are in a nanny share and don't pay our nanny hourly (just a set monthly salary, paid every two weeks), but it works out to slightly over $16/hr. I'm in a medium-sized (?) city in the South. We gave her a raise on her one-year anniversary - the raise was also in terms of her monthly salary but it worked out to a little over $1/hr extra, which seemed to be fairly standard from my internet research.

We use a service called Savvy Nanny to handle the taxes.

ETA: I also took car of laundry, vacuuming, mopping the kitchen, dishes, etc.

How much do you pay your nanny? Bonus points for telling me where you live! We live in the Portland, ME, area, and the going rate for nannies was $16-18/hour it seemed. We pay ours $17/hour, but she is part time. She watches both kids for certain hours of the day, but the older goes to preschool for a large chunk of the time she is here. So, she does laundry, tidies up, and is just generally fantastic at keeping things organized. She's been with us 6m and hasn't asked for a raise, though I think we will give one at her anniversary.
