I'm actually in the market for a nanny come this fall and I am thinking around 14/15 per hour. It would come out to around $700/week which seems fair to me for the area (pa). For emergency nannies we pay between $17-$20 per hour for only one child but these are older more experienced nannies who are available a la carte. I feel like if we guarantee a full time job the rate should be lower, even for 2.

We did $1500/month for two kids... a little under $10/hour, I think? We're in Orange County, CA and paid her under the table, so it was $1500 flat.

I'm in MA working as a nanny & interviewing for a new job so I'm pretty familiar with current rates. All the positions I've been approached about are salaried $800-1,000/wk for 40hrs (overtime is time & a half, so around 30/hr for extra hours, but if you were to divide out set hours they'd be 20-25/hr), these are on the books though, so those paying under the table pay less, also most ppl paying under the table don't do time & a half for overtime. Hiring someone young is another way to save some $$. You could also see if there is anyone in the town preschool program that might want to share with you in the afternoon, that would help with the cost. You can offer other perks that would be valuable to the nanny, but maybe wouldn't cost you much, like adding her to your gym membership, AAA, or cell phone plan.

Keep in mind most nannies have flexible rates, sure I have a set amount I need to get by, but I also only work for people I love. I'd rather make a little less & love going to work than work for people I can't stand & I understand that people have limits on what they can afford to pay me.

@BandDmommy: This is pre-tax. I pay employer taxes as well, So, it costs me more than $17/hour in reality and she nets less, like every hourly employee out there (myself included)!

Here in MI we have found that it becomes a bit of a coin toss at 2 kids in the higher rate daycare rooms...

We have a sitter who will likely become our PM Nanny when DD1 goes to public pre-school...She said her normal rate would be $15/hr but if we want to guarantee 15 hours a week (3pm-6pm daily) she would do $12.hr. It will be cash under the table.

We don't pay taxes on our nanny, she is under the table. We pay $24.50/hour (KILL. ME. NOW.) Definitely on the higher end of things (live in NYC) but she's been with us since the kids were 3 weeks old and they adore her so...

Just curious when you guys are quoting prices are these after tax rates? I know for nannies you pay household taxes, so you pay $x but they really get less because of taxes or do you gross them up?

@T.H.O.U.: yeah, i agree! That, plus if you pay the nanny more, she's more willing to do stuff around the house, at least in my experience.

We pay ours $14/ hour for 2 kids (1 year old and 2 year old) (Methuen, MA) We found her by chance and she is absolutely fantastic- she is a college student and our schedule works well with hers so its a great fit. Most people we interviewed were asking for 15-25/hour. We lucked out that its cheaper than daycare, but it wont be when DS goes to preschool in the fall- then we will be paying her (with probably a raise by then) and DS preschool bill.

We don't use a nanny but my impression is that the going rate around here is about $18-20/hr. I *think* that is for two kids (everyone I know seems to use daycare for one kid and then jump to nanny for two). I'm in Boston. We pay $15/hr plus generous tip to our babysitter, who used to be a nanny. We only have one LO though.

I think even if the older kids are in school, there is still a level of coordination required of the nanny (pick up, drop off, put away backpacks, etc).

@HappyBaker: if we have 3 I'll definitely give ours a raise -- the boys will be in school so I'll probably reduce her hours a bit but up her to 19/h. My friend in west rox pays $20 for 3 kids but the two older are in school 830-130 and nap in the afternoon. But of course there are summers!

One of my kids daycare teachers has expressed interest in being a nanny. At first I thought it would be amazingly cheaper than daycare but running the numbers it doesn't seem that way! I'm in MA and pay $700 a week for preschool and an infant, 40 hours a week.

If we did this we'd send DD to our towns full day (8:30-2:30) preschool, which also costs money. But the nanny would mostly be watching the 1 year old all day.

What do you pay your nanny if you have two kids? Bonus points if you're in MA / Boston area too!
