We have a 12 year old dog that has had a bunch of issues over the last few years, and we are always having to spend money at the vet. It is always an issue that can be "easily" fixed, nothing like cancer, so we always end up forking over the money. I won't even go into how much we have spent, but it is way more than a few hundred dollars. We also have two other dogs and two cats, so we expect to pay a fair amount at the vet. All of the rounds of shots, Neuter for my male, and spay for my female. Just a ton of other stuff too. I have two cats, and a regular vet visit for each is $80 base. Then shots and any testing they might need to do. So maybe $300-$400 a year. That's not counting my older cat's medication, which is $50 a month, and their food, which we do "splurge" on. This year hasn't been normal though. My 13 year old dog is in the early stages of kidney failure, which we found out at the end of last year. LUCKILY, the adoption came with a 30-day trial of pet insurance so that covered about $2000 of it. You bet your tush I've continued to keep it to this day (almost 11 years later). We pay about $100 a year on shots and $12.95 a month for pet insurance, which I count towards her health expenses. Otherwise my dog has had no other health problems other than an infected paw last year that cost about $250 to check, test, and treat. We DO feed her very high quality dog food and treats, which I think really helps in terms of preventative care. 11 year old German shepherd mix with no health problems is pretty darn good, I think. My dog is approaching 9 years old. This year it's been her bladder stones; between 1 surgery, rounds of meds, xrays and labs, I blocked out how much we spent :bummed: She had cancer a few years back and that was a fortune too :shocked: We were so thankful that it was a visible tumor and it was removed w/ just surgery and nothing else was needed! I'm always thrilled if I leave the vet's office having spent less than $100! My perception is probably skewed though, having spent the past 2 years or so taking care of an old dog whose health kept failing in one way or another - we had an abcessed tooth + emergency removal, prescription dry food, lens luxation in both eyes + 3 prescription eye drops, an eye removal, ultrasounds, etc. And now we have a puppy who has had to have all of his shots. It's hard for me to remember what the vet costs are annually for a healthy pet! Probably a check-up once per year or a vaccine of $50 or so and then we also have his anal glands expressed every 2 months or so to the tune of $15. I'm going to say maybe $200 annually if the pet remains completely healthy?? They're on prescription dry food. Then there's the wet food and cat litter. It's $45/visit at the vet. I have two cats. So $90 once a year just for annuals. This year, my orange one needs his teeth removed ($350). I also get them groomed ($120/3 months)...honestly probably inching towards the $1,000 mark by the time you factor in food. Typically he's pretty healthy so we just go once per year. (This is banfield through petsmart). We heard through a friend of a local clinic that will be a bit cheaper for the same services including dental, so we decided to switch! I wasn't too sure on the commitment part which is why we never got it. I've never done the math because it would make me sad lol. But $182 doesn't sound too bad. For our dog I'd say we spend probably $250/year at the vet (just one visit with shots and usually one other visit for some random issue) and probably $350-400/year on food. For one cat, we rarely take her to the vet because she has been very healthy and is an indoor cat so she doesn't require a lot of shots. Maybe $75-100/year. The other cat has medical problems so now (in maintenance mode) he costs us probably $300/year at the vet + $500ish/year in meds. And then the cats decided that they will only eat canned food (sigh) so thats like another $400ish/year in food for both of them. Man that was depressing. Pets are expensive. She has some inflammation down there. The visit was $182 and included meds. DH thought it was expensive but I didn't think it was that bad. I think we spend about $300-400 at the vet each year per dog. That's between wellness checks and shots. Though, we did spend $500 for our other dog to have his eyelashes removed because it was causing eye irritation. I thought it was permanent fix... it was not. :( Wish I could get that money back. Or have the DH tell me ahead of time it could be a temporary fix. Guess we learned our lesson. The currently sick dog needs her teeth cleaned. That will be $500-$600. Also, this same dog was sick a lot the first year we got her and definitely saw a hefty vet bill. Luckily, her vet bills are just routine and wellness checks since then. The things we do for our pets. Still love them and would do anything for them. ETA: I guess we spend more than $400 a year on each pet. That doesn't include the other non-vet related expenses (*cough cough* Like toys, treats, clothes.)
